I have a Power Up Rewards account with GameStop- I know, you could argue that it’s a waist of money, but I do take advantage of some of the better deals. Anyway, I got an email from them this morning advertising that if I purchase one (or any) of a select number of new games for the 360 at $60, I can trade it in later for the Xbox One version of the same game for only $10 more!! This means I would end up paying $70 total for the game…
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I read somewhere (I’m pretty sure it was IGN) that Xbox One games will be retailing at $60, the same price as new games are now, so why would I pay an additional $10 per game when I can just wait until the system comes out and get the games for ultimately cheaper than their deal offers?
Does that seem like a good deal to you? It seems like garbage to me, and the only one who is benefiting is GameStop by getting premium games traded back to resell and make a killing on them.
I swear everywhere I go there’s a Gamestop. Every mall, plaza, parking lot, and even some stand alone ones. I see more Gamestops than Wendy’s nowadays. How are they staying afloat when Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist should be kicking their ass?
The deal is really like an upgrade fee. If you have a game that you have to have Day 1, then you can get it now for full price and then “upgrade” it later in “super duper HD graphics mode” for $10 more. It’s not a great deal, but it’s not really a scam either. They’d be stupid to let you upgrade your copy for free.
Actually, Power Up Rewards Pro is nice. They took $15 from me and I’ve taken hundreds back from them lol. For a while you could easily get PowerUp Pro for free if you were willing to buy a few cheap HDMI cables and then trade them in. Now the value kinda sucks on the HDMI cables so it’s not really worth it.
To clarify my post above- I don’t recommend shopping at Gamestop in general. However, often they offer the highest trade in values which is something that can be taken advantage of. They can eat a bag of dicks for trying to sell me opened games as new though.
You are looking at the deal incorrectly. The deal is there for those who can’t wait to play ‘select title’ especially Madden. If you are a patient person and only care about the Xbone versions of those games the the deal does not apply to you. Granted, I don’t think many people are going to care about the deal but it’s better to have the choice of spending 70 vs. 120 for those that can’t wait until the release of the next gen platform to play the title.
Yeah it’s really not that hard to figure out. For people like this this is a really good deal. There are some people out there that just can’t wait. They’ve gotta have it now! To be able to play something now and then only pay $10 for an upgrade in a few months is actually not that terrible.
I remember the days when flipping among Gamestop, Blockbuster, Amazon and other various stores could net you profit. Doing that made me a few hundred bucks that got me through a time when I was unexpectedly laid off (and still lived at home). Can’t do that some much anymore since Blockbusters are pretty much all out of business and everyone is giving crap trade in values.
