Let me see if I can explain what I mean. Watch these shows again if you can, going by your memories just isn’t going to cut it. You’ll note that the movement is bad and there is a huge abundance of mistakes, there are scenes where Autobots have Decipticon signs, the famous scenes of characters mouths bouncing up and down (no not talking, literally bouncing up and down), things that were colored wrong (and this even plagued the movie and what not in certain scenes, the one that comes to memory is a close up of Starscream where his chest area was yellow instead of white and yellow). Of course it is yet a sacrifice, I can’t even recall two other shows that had as big a number of casts like these two and just the fact that they banged out 3 months worth of entertainment every year was really quite amazing that it didn’t look far worse. The character designs, some by Peter Chung of Transformers(but he’s not Japanese), some of the G.I.Joe characters by the same artist who does the JoJo Animes were excellent but they never lead themselves to be Animated easily given the tight schedule. Their movements are very choppy, but honestly you will have to watch these shows again to understand what I’m talking about. The Animes, while they typically repeat transformation scenes and what not they were never plagued with this choppy movement, one of the benefits of scoring after, and not prior, what they are more suited to. Heh, just to throw this in there the original Popeye cartoon was also scored after and not before, it made for some hilarious adlibs, there’s bonuses to every side and method I think.
Paul Dini, Bruce Tim said they used to work on The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. They noted themselves how bad the Animation turned out given the difficulties of the anatomy which is why they created their Batman/Justice League look they use now, it lent itself to much better Animation to what grounding something in strict anatomy looks like, compare Batman to say the 90s X-Men cartoon but just in terms of what looks better.
Now Animation done here is in a funny place(but a lot of it is outsourced, it’s kind of difficult to discuss and know who really did what). No one is ever going to make a show as big as G.I.Joe or Transformers which is why every new Transformers show is about… I dunno, 5 robots vs. 5(done in Japan mostly but not CGI Beast Wars which was about 5 to 5) as was G.I.Joe Extreme (but they can up the anti with that terrible G.I.Joe CGI crap a bit)and they aren’t even trying for anything that remotely looks like anatomy for the most part the stand out here is Clone Wars. Japan, even with all of their big eyed shows are still drawing fingers, hands, etc, there’s more of a semblance of anatomy in the bulk of their shows, it’s one of the things they go for over lip synching. American cartoons are always lip synched perfectly. But different strokes, different folks I guess. Justice League and Teen Titans IMHO is better than a lot of Anime being released now, I’ll say that much.
GI Joe and TFs were animated by the wonderful folks at TOEI animation and although the cartoons had better animation than typical american cartoons, they were still bad compared to what they churning out at home. They also had lots of mistakes… I think the bad animation comment can be largely attributed to the korean animated episodes. yes the japanese ones weren’t works of art, but the korean ones… ugh. :sad: Most of the post movie episodes were done by some other company, and they were bad City of Steel and Carnage in C-Minor are the worst and most bashed episodes… It’s so bad its really funny. :rolleyes:
Sano said just about everything too. That post wasn’t there as I wrote this! lol Smaller casts… etc etc. Transformers Armada was simly horribly animated, even though they re-used a lot of stock animation in transformation sequences and such.

Actually more than that was outsourced to japan… so we all kind of grew up on japanese animation and didn’t even know it! alot of the signs of their origins can be scene in the opening themes which show the higher quality production.
Also Justice League is just a solid, well written show. It’s bad ass.
The same person who did his voice in the Anime is the same Adon from the games, Takagi Wataru, he’s also the seiyuu of Zangief in the games and Onizuka of GTO, Hugo only in SVC Chaos and Ryu only in SF3NG and SF3 Second Impact. To say you hate his voice in the Anime is like saying you hate his voice in the games but then again maybe you do, I dunno.
I’m definitely on the “sub” side of “sub vs. dub”. It’s not that dubs are universally terrible, but 90% of them are horrid or, at the very least, inferior to the original langauge version. NOte also that this goes both ways: Anyone ever see Transformers the Movie in Japanese? It wasn’t that good; the english version was vastly superior.
I’ve seen bad subs, but they’re rare. So rare as to not really count. Uusally a bad sub is a show that wouldn’t be worth watching in any langauge.
Speaking of TF: Sano, in what warped reality did G.I.Joe and TFs have “bad animation”?
His voice was more high-pitched in the games and dialogue was pretty much limited to “Jaguar Kick” or “Knee” and various screeches. In the Alpha movie his voice is deeper and pretty hoarse, like he’s been smoking 10 packs of Winstons a day the last 20 years.
And I can’t believe this new movie excludes Chun Li, and includes a bath scene with 10-year old Sakura (if it takes place in the past).
Eh? I specifically remember seeing Gouki’s cameo (sitting by a wall during one cut of the India scene) in the dubbed release (the only one I’ve seen so far). So it’s still there, unless he had another apperance in the original that you’re referring to.
If you saw the movie on DVD it’s letter boxed so he shows up. But on VHS they made the movie fit the TV screen so he gets cut off. Japanese version, including fan subs were never made it to fit the TV screen as this is really one movie you are not supposed to do that with and seeing Gouki is a big reason for it.
There was also a super cheesy effect on the VHS where Ryu and Ken faced each other towards the end of the flick during their fight and since they both couldn’t fit on the screen with the TV sized version they did a really cornball shifting effect to fit them both in.
One thing I feel I should mention in regards to the sub vs dub issue… is that most of us are not familiar with the japanese language. But we are familiar with the English language. Thus, it is far more likely for us to think that a certain anime is dubbed poorly when it is in English. Since most of us aren’t very familiar with Japanese, how are we supposed to be able to judge whether or not a particular japanese dubbed anime is good or bad? Ignorance is bliss.
Also hearing english dubbed anime brings the experience more closer to that of watching a saturday morning cartoon. But if the voices are in Japanese though, it makes the product more ‘foreign’ and thus, less like a cheesy saturday morning cartoon.
A popular clich in anime is the ear-wrenching ultra high-pitched girly voiced characters. (to the Japanese, it’s considered more attractive, they encourage the female seiyuu to sound this way) I find that this usually done a lot better in the Japanese language as opposed to hearing it in English dubs. (usually a woman attempting to disguise her mature-sounding voice to pass for a 10 year old, but failing miserably)
I like how Japanese seiyuus seem do their voice-over work all together, giving them more interaction with one another, as opposed to each actor voicing their roles separately and in isolation.
The Canadian Anime Expo will have a showing of the movie in question, so in a weeks time, I will post my review on the new hit. Gonna burn some muscle!
Eh, I don’t know if it’s the same thing, I’ve heard the same voice actor voice differing characters and liked it at some point and didn’t in others, while this is the same character, it’s in very different formats. Hearing a guy spew a few phrases is different than hearing him in dialogue.
Wow though, I must be pretty lucky to be able to enjoy both subs and dubs. Sometimes when I’m watching a movie, I don’t mind a dub if the voices sound okay, because if I’m watching something with a lot of action, having to split my attention between the subtitles and the action isn’t too fun. (It’s not that I’m slow and unable to do so, but you are much freer in terms of being able to pic out things in the background, or look at certian junk while not reading.)
Some people will call on the general philosophy that the subs are closer to the original japanese, which is okay, but I’m entirely fine with it being paraphrased. I mean a movie isn’t just being translated for audiences over seas, it’s being adapted, so when you see it over here it’s the english adaptation of the japanese story.
And in cases where you have the best case scenario in each, I prefer the dub mainly because voices you can understand sometimes adds more to the whole feel of the show, like Cowboy Bebop.
Though I guess as has been said, dubs vs subs is mostly a personal preference, and for some of us, we take it either way.

You know why, right? I’m sure if the legal marrying age over there for females was lowered to, say, 11, the marriage and pregnancy rate would skyrocket.
You gotta listen to those whacked out Japanese channels where they dubbed every English movie out there. IE They dubbed Simpsons. Homer is alright, but Marge has one of the highest pitched voices, I ever heard.
Anyway, what the fuck is wrong with wanting Dubs over Subs? I mean do subtitle fans die when they find out that some people like dubs better than subs?
And also anyone here watches hong kong movies? I strongly believe that the subs are made by people who hasn’t gone to a single english class in their whole life. It’s like CATS the game.
Actually, Michael Donovan voiced Guile in the American Saturday morning Street Fighter cartoon, not the anime. In the movie, he’s voiced by Kirk Thornton. Same cat who voices Jin in the Samurai Champloo dub. And yea, as you mentioned, Ryu in SFII, SFIIV and SFA.
