Alien: Isolation New E3 footage

Defensive weapons confirmation: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3278407/in-alien-isolation-you-can-run-but-you-cant-hide/

I’m a fan of the alien movies, but they’re going to have to really try hard to make this entertaining for 8 to 10 hours. Not sure how this one is going to turn out.

Really cool to see the team’s commitment to free form AI and be against scripted pathing or behavior, I really hope it works as claimed and this isn’t just typical PR fluff.

It all looks amazing so far, but that ending.

Can’t fucking wait.

Dat alien footstep noise!

wow, the ending was like ‘whoa’. Got me checking corridors at work for noises…

Apparently, several focus group got to play a short demo of its latest build. This are comments that came out from the testers:

  • Amazing environment, sound, and graphics
  • 8 people managed to get the end without dying on their first attempt (2 were female)
  • Alot of “Do this objective, hide now, do this objective, hide now, and repeat”
  • Lots of complaint that Xenomorph was too fast chasing you down when it saw the player, giving the player no chance at all to avoid death (pretty much you have to accept death and try again.) Players wanted this changed
  • Alot of the surprise/shock was removed because of the radar. You knew most of the time where the xeno was. Some players asked for the radar to be removed.
  • Apparently, they told the player the xeno would “learn”, that if something worked once it wouldnt work again during the rest of the playthrough. Not sure if that actually learning or scripted.

Still not feeling this game.

Interesting and insightful.

Here’s my take on that though:

  1. Known.
  2. Doesn’t really matter.
  3. Oh, so you mean it’s a modern survival horror game? Known.
  4. This has been known for a while, and I think they made a note of it in the first trailer or two.
  5. While I can’t really comment on that, and if it’s really a problem, the devs can tweak it(wether they do or not will be seen in time). In one of the earlier trailers, they show an interaction with a Xeno while the player is using the scanner, and the dot was still ambiguous enough for you to not be able to know exactly where the thing is, though it does show you that it’s around. I do think that it should maybe have it’s use limited by some sort of recharging battery or something.
  6. Been known for a while, posted in this thread, and still unknown on how complex the AI is.

I have a feeling that focus group played it on just a monitor. This game thrives from sound and Project Morpheus has binaural audio.

This game will be better than amnesia (if Vr headsets are released on time)

That ending was some scary stuff.

What? The hell you expect when there’s a Xenomorph out lurkin? So like, they want it to spot them, then get into sprinting form and count to 10 or something? Apart of being at the bottom of the food chain is the well known fact that there is no escape when you’re spotted by the dominant species. They’re killing machines, they were always faster than us. I’d tell them to go do some research.

Most likely scripted, meaning there are booby traps set up all over the map that activate whenever the player is in the right situation. example; hide under a table once, then hide under a table in the next room and a pen might roll off the table alerting the Xenomorph and in the end you being killed. Yeah, I’m not feeling that unless I can catch that rolling pen before it hits the ground. If they never told me that’s how the game was designed I’d probably like it during my first playthrough, though.

Link to tester comments?

double post

I think there are merits to the complaints. Remember this is a focus group and most are probably the general casual gamers (the larger spectrum of gamers), which is probably the reason they did this to get a sense of what works and what doesnt. I honestly believe the theres a limit on dying so many times in similar circumstances before the game totally turns the casual gamer off. Furthermore, the fact that theres no option to escape once spotted leaves the player the sense of uselessness. Theres really no point in trying if your spotted, might as well drop the controller and wait to retry. Id prefer if you could give the player an option, it builds on the suspense that a player has a slim chance of getting away and stay hidden till it leaves.
I think back to The Last of Us and the success that game had. Clickers were in some ways similar to this game, but players had options. It didnt in anyway lessen the overall experience. The thrill of killing it or getting away added to the game experience.

But then again, im a bit conflicted because apparently if your good at using the radar, it gives the player too much of an advantage at avoiding any unnecessary encounter with Xeno.

Compiled through comments of one of the reddit threads

Id hope they release a demo for the public so that people can try and judge for themselves. For me, its a wait and see kind of game.

I’m more on the casual side of gaming these days and when I think about this game and this style of game, there needs to be some way of covering a mistake. For TWO reasons actually, one a perfect play through should be a goal, not a necessity, and keeping your cool as much as possible should be ‘rewarded’. If you get startled and can figure out someway to save yourself, you should be rewarded with - well being able to save yourself. I’m not saying an I win button or easy mode, but considering you can’t kill the alien and your defenses are so minor, if you - using the example listed, hide under a table and a pen drops - should have a chance to do SOMETHING to escape the situation.

Also someone school me - ‘when’ is this happening? They are talking about finding Ripley - yet the last time we saw her she had been reborn as kind of an Alien Queen (smh)

MOMMY!

Oh, Of course, I’m all in for having options. Positioning, level design, etc. should effect the outcome of surviving the games attack phase. If I’m spotted out in the open or happen to get ambushed (like in the video) I expect a game over screen to appear. But, if there’s power available in the area and if there’s a working door I can shut to prevent death then I expect that door to be usable in the game. I’m not sure if it’ll keep me safe or if I’ll even be able to reach that door and shut it in time, but at least I thought I had a chance of surviving, lol.

Maybe the gameplay thrives on the Hunger to find resources for protection, similar to Don’t Starve. Which would be cool, the environment will then have a similar function to classic resident evil but improved on loads.

If there’s crafting in the game then this is probably what they’re doing.

And yeah focus tests are made to find out what works so don’t assume the game will be bad based on that.

Shit the potential for second screen assymetric VR cooperation is incredible

I totally agree with you. Theres not enough info as to how far away you can be spotted or noticed via noise from the Xeno. Looking at the ending to the video above, you can really see the speed at which the Xeno moves. Yah if your in an open area like that video your pretty much screwed.

It was confirmed there will be some crafting in the game presumably for what CA called “defensive weapons” critics who played the demo said they found parts of items they couldn’t use. I think that’s a good idea, having a minimal ability to fight back is much more suited to not being able to fight back at all for an Alien game. In the first 3 films the characters had varying degress of weaponry and the true horror came from the realization that their weapons were oversized metal placebos at best, and recreating that sense of giving you a security blanket and then revealing how useless it is is essential to conveying the feeling of helplessness.

As far as time line goes Amanda is in her 20’s or 30’s and in the films we only see her as an old lady so it takes place a few years after Alien, but we don’t know how close it is to Aliens.

Dem aliens. Gonna be watching for this. I hope the option to play the bugs is included or becomes DLC after enough furniture gets broken.
