There was no Director’s Cut of Alien 3. The closest you’d find would be the 3hr Workprint that was never officially released by the studio. The Assembly Cut wasn’t even authorized by Fincher. He has stated multiple times that the only way he’d be happy would be a complete re-shoot.
That’s not what he’s talking about. He means the actual complaints people have had are not what Scott seems to think they are, being the violence and/or scariness. The problem IMO was shit just stopped making any fucking sense because characters became complete idiots.
I agree with what people said so far. Ridley Scott got the wrong idea… Prometheus was not scary enough??? Uhhh… the Alien franchise stopped being scary 30 years ago with the release of Aliens. People complain about dumb shit like that scientist wanting to pet the murderous looking alien snake thing. Also, a lot of people complaining about the running away from the rolling ship, which I let slide because it’s easy as fuck to criticize when your sitting on your fat ass, but the point is in reality when people are faced with dangerous situations they don’t think rationally… I’ve seen it happen plenty of times. Either way, I enjoyed Prometheus even with all it’s flaws. They didn’t break the movie for me as say… Revenge of the Sith.
I don’t think there will be much about Prometheus in Covenant besides the intro and maybe something in the ending setting up a sequel that may or may not happen depending on how well this movie does and I believe it will do good.
No, no one liked it because the story and characters where fucking stupid as shit. Being scary or not had nothing to do with it and if he thinks that was the problem then he didn’t listen to anyone.
(Wait, what? We’ve had an Alien thread for the past five years? …Where the fuck have I been…?)
Ironically, that infamously stupid looking running scene at the end actually is arguably one of the more justifiable–arguably even the most justifiable–stupid moment in the movie given all the flaming debris that is falling around them, which means that they are weirdly safest in the shadow of the rotating wheel of doom until they can get to actual cover. It’s just that even when (read: if) you accept that logic, it still looks stupid as fuck and is the crowning achievement of stupidity on a visual level of all the stupidity in the movie that one has to endure to even get to that point. And then of course Charlize Theron’s character gets possessed by a 1950s B-movie actress and trips…
Sigh. Prometheus is easily the worst Alien movie in the “main” franchise. Hell, I’m tempted to say that it’s even worse than both of the Alien vs. Predator movies including the first one just due to how mind-breaking stupid almost everyone and everything was in Prometheus. At the very least even the first Alien vs. Predator is better about not leaving you guessing about whether it was actually supposed to be an Alien franchise movie or just an homage, even if Alien vs. Predator was of course a shitty one. Meanwhile, Prometheus is–well, was with this sequel–weirdly ambivalent about even that aspect for the longest time despite the fact it’s supposed to be an origins story, and that’s not even getting into the possible plot holes it introduces to the franchise as a whole.
Honestly, the only prequel films that I think fuck up more than Prometheus are the Star Wars ones and Wolverine: Origins. [/excessive cursing]
I don’t think only changing the stupid character decisions to more plausibe decisons would have made it a better film without also making it terrifying. He would have had to change the storyline to make it a lot more terrifying than it was.
Alien 1 didn’t have a complex storyline but it was a lot scarier than Prometheus and a far better film as a result.
Yup. While making these seemingly ‘extremely intelligent’ characters actually act more intelligent would have saved the the film for me, it wouldn’t have for many. Why? It also would have needed to be more terrifying for sure. Why? We should be blaming 20th Century Fox for this, and NOT Ridley Scott (or even Lindelof).
A lot of disappointment can be set firmly upon audience expectation set by studio marketing promos prior to a film’s release. This was clearly the case with Prometheus because both the Official Teaser AND the Official Trailer paint us a picture that is seemingly much more fast-paced and terrifying than what we ended up watching.
I mean…C’MON… even the teaser used the same background audio and the same style title logo reveal as promo stuff for the first Alien. That was done to whip up the same thematic interest–when the two films COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE DIFFERENT!
This was misleading as fuck, and Fox has a long history of this shit.
I thought Scott didn’t want to make an Alien sequel in the first place and the only reason he agreed was Fox just kept throwing more and more money at him?
I was literally seconds into downloading the neomorph scene described in the clip above, someone uploaded it on youtube last night but seconds into my download the clip was blocked by 20th century fox, lol.
I crack way too easily… I don’t think any of the trailers were even necessary except for the Prologue, and that’s because the Prologue won’t be in the main movie.
(Whoops. Used “except” instead of “accept” in that last post. Fixed.)
I’m not sure why you’re surprised given that trailers show things that aren’t actually in their movies all the time, whether it’s due to it getting axed from the final cut for whatever reason or just being intentional misdirection or, worst of all, straight-up lying like the Alien 3 trailer jopamo brought up above. If that’s surprising you, then you really might want to dampen your expectations of this movie lest you be disappointed (again).
If anything, then I think more movies should do prologue-type trailers where it would help explain the story so long as they make it clear that it isn’t going to be in the actual movie and so long as that they can still get the story across in the movie itself or even just for hype with things they can’t legitimately fit in the movie. I of course understand that it’s an additional monetary burden though, so I doubt it will happen even in the cases where it would actually help a lot without giving away the whole damn movie. Oh well.
The Prologue is just to explain what happened at the end of Prometheus and just before the start of Covenant. Just like the GoPro footage of the crew sending messages back to their families wont be in the film.
Alright, I have the 10 minute Neomorph footage, if you guys want to watch it I can send you the download link… I’m watching it right now.
