Double post, since SRK can barely keep it’s shit together these days. They should definitely bring Spaihts back as writer for Prometheus 2 imo.
ah sweet, I will try and read this over the weekend
It’s interesting…wouldn’t call it a shooting script by any means, if they had some middle ground between Lindelof’s stuff and Spaihts it would have been interesting. They should have gone with Spaiht’s version of Holloway though…and basically a lot of the WTF elements to the character behavior is works better in Spaiht’s script.
There’s more science to the characters’ reasoning for things in the front end.
Shit that was better in Spaiht’s draft
1.Front end build of Shaw/Holloway characters presenting their case more definitively to Weyland, explaining the science behind their findings and indicating the Engineers have repeatedly visited Earth to push evolutions in a particular direction every 10000 years or so.
2.Slow build of the ship systematically searching the system presenting the scientists as intelligent and thorough with them figuring out what they’re dealing with environmentally. They clearly state things that are ambiguous about the atmosphere in the final film
3.Nobody takes their helmets off, even when they discover the terraforming the Engineers were up to.
4.Fifeld and Milburn getting lost is the butt of quite a few jokes, Milburn giving Fifeld shit about being the map guy and forgetting the map, Janek toasts them as being the first humans becoming lost in an alien civilization.
5.Fifeld warns Milburn about fucking with the snake, Milburn shrugs him off by bragging how formidable their suits are, mentioning they’re practically bulletproof
6.Holloway is disappointed by not finding any living Engineers, but isn’t deterred because the discovery they’ve made is too significant to just dismiss unlike his Prometheus counterpart.
7.They should have kept the Holloway sexburster scene in, even with the removal of the Xenomorphs, it would have been a nasty scene to see him start changing or his body being ripped up
8.There’s scenes where the crew discusses what’s happening, and most of them seem aware of what’s going on. After Shaw has her surgery, everyone notices and they’re shocked, and Shaw tells them exactly what happened.
9.Fifeld Monster has a moment where he recognizes Vickers and says “You…” Kinda creepy.
10.Vicker’s death by having Fifeld killed and melting her would have been more horrifying…
11.Though the planet is changed in Prometheus to LV-223, I loved Spaihts far more ambiguous ending. The Engineer ship *is *the same ship as the one the Nostromo finds, and it’s crash after the ship collision is what sets off the beacon that draws the Nostromo into the system. I also really dug how how David wonders who will respond to the destruction of the Prometheus/Juggernaut crash first: humans, or Engineers.
Otherwise, there is a lot of stuff that is better in the final film. I liked Lindelof’s take on David much more.
Fucking hollywood. A real shame Ridley just let the suites make the decision to dumb the movie down like that.
Somebody on another Prometheus site noted the parallels between Shaw and the squid, and the baby metroid Samus spares in Metroid II/Super. Can’t unsee.
The squid did look like an Albino Metroid.
Coincidentally, the original Alien was a huge source of influence for Metroid’s creators…
remember my theory a few posts up?
evidence
diagram so you know wtf i’m talking about
OK HERE WE GO
REGULAR ALIEN MOUTH-MOUTH (unconnected to hard palate)
PROMETHEUS ALIEN MOUTH-MOUTH (connected to hard palate)
ALIEN QUEEN MOUTH-MOUTH (look closely)
SUCK MY DICK >:(
Finally got around to watching the original Alien movies lately. Alien wasn’t as good as I remembered but Aliens is still awesome.
i finally watched the movie don’t get it. so why did they decide to kill the humans? i’m reading this last page and it says because he was … jesus? but if jesus had access to advanced alien technology… jesus would’ve laughed at their petty attempts to crucify him…
yeah good writing doesn’t mean “make people ask questions to get people to talk about your work”.
Granted, I like Blade Runner (for the characters; not the story), but as for SciFi as a whole, I hate this type of story telling due to every writer(s) going for the angle of make the viewer question everything. Once you finally get those questions answered, you just ask even more questions which in return make you realize that this shit is stupid, and those hours of watching the movie with all of that questioning later has basically robbed you of precious time that you could use surfing for porn. It’s either way too much filler with questions or way too much filler with brain dead violence which never helps the actual point of the story. most movies like these have none. just a huge budget, talented workers, and no substance.
At least you don’t need to use more than 10% of your brain to get to “the point” in porn.
2 cents.
Dragging this thread back up due to Aliens:Colonial Marines finally being released in a few weeks. Reportedly they talked at length with Ridley Scott as he was gearing up for Prometheus, so the universes will be in synch.
Who’s gonna play?
Also finally cracked open my Alien Quadrilogy Blu-Ray set. Very nice.
Aliens is somewhat disappointing because Cameron shot it in 1:85:1 instead of 2:35:1 standard, and the film stock it was shot on does not lend itself well to Blu-Ray. Very grainy. Not unwatchable and you adjust too it, but it doesn’t look nearly as clean and shiny as Alien or 3.
Each documentary adds a good hour of footage through enhancement pods(basically interview clips that cut out some of the finger pointing and complaints about each movie)
Alien 3 gets it’s documentary fully restored, has the “Wreckage and Rape: The Making of Alien 3” name back, and adds over an hour of footage fully exploring the problems with the production, Fincher’s frustration and the studio guys blaming everyone but themselves for the movie’s problems. But not a really a mystery anymore.
Basically…
The entire production budget was blown on Vincent Ward’s vision.
Fincher was brought in 3 weeks before shooting began, had no script, and was literally trying to rewrite the script around using the sets that had already been built for another version of the movie.
2 weeks in cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth(Blade Runner DP) had to leave the production due to complications with Parkinson’s disease. Alex Thomson was quickly hired to take his place.
Fincher was hired due his work with Propaganda Films, and had already had a great deal of success making music videos and commercials, similar to Ridley Scott’s track record with RSA. Expecting to be in control of his own destiny once shooting began, the studio lost all confidence in Fincher’s ability, despite his track record and his acuity as technician. While Fincher won over the cast and crew with his technical know-how, the studio side started undermining his decision making as soon as they started shooting.
Jon Landau(producer for Cameron nowadays) was trying to reinvent the role of production executive, but after Fincher and his selected writer turned in their rewrite, Landau removed Fincher from the scriptwriting process, repeated statements from cast and crew sad the Landau approached Fincher as if he was a spoiled child, and wasn’t going to take any shit from him. Landau believed that Fincher’s only contribution to the project was that he “Knew where to put the camera”
Scriptwriting duties were handed over to David Giler and Walter Hill, producers for the Alien series, and co-writers of the first Alien film. Not great writers. Fincher would be shooting scenes, then find out days later that scenes had been cut, rendering them useless. One of the actors relates that they probably could have edited 3 separate movies from the footage they shot.
After a grueling shoot at Pinewood studios, Fox shut the production down. Fincher and editor Terry Rawlings were asked to deliver a workprint cut, to see what they had and what they needed to add during additional reshoots. Fincher’s initial cut did not go over well.
Fox asked him what he needed to fix the movie, Fincher would tell them he needed A,B,C,D,E,F scenes, Fox would limit him to choices B,C,F. They would shoot what they could, show Fox the added scenes, and Fox would say it was not enough. And the whole ABC process would start again.
Even while editing the movie, Fincher would make editing choices, only to have Landau’s production monkey tell the editor to not listen to him.
Fox decided to reshoot the ending of the film with the chestburster popping out of Ripley’s chest when she throws herself into the blast furnace. Fincher was adamantly against this, and pretty much walked off the movie at that point.
The line producer related that he had witnessed many of Fincher and Landau’s heated phone debates. Fincher basically shot for 12-16 hours a day, then spent hours every night arguing with the producers and trying to make sense of Giler/Hill’s script, which was an assemblage of a number of different Alien 3 rewrites.
The producer ventured that he thought Fincher could have taken a gentler approach, as he was constantly frustrated with studio interference and it sometimes boiled over onto the set.
To Fincher he said, “Look, I like people, and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and listen to what they have to say with an optimistic approach to their strengths”
Fincher’s response: “I like people too. They stack well.”
Good shit dude! I had the older Quadrilogy set and loved the extras but I avoid Blu and never bothered to pick up the new set.
i bought the Quadrilogy DVD set a few years ago. worst $20 i ever spent. only redeeming aspect was Sigourney pulling out dem titties for Resurrection.
You watched Resurrection? Even I have a hard time sitting through that mess…that newborn :shake: Trying to watch an Alien movie, and Pumpkinhead shows up.
the titties part was during a pre-production costume test. Weaver was testing her claws while wearing a clear top and then she tore the top off. it was shot gonzo style which is funny to me.
also the reason why the Quad set sucked so much is because whatever DVD press method they used, it made many of the discs coasters. a couple of my EXTRAS discs and Resurrection wouldn’t play the whole way through. many people had the same problem. obviously i found out about that too late. apparently 20thCenturyFox knew about it and instead of pulling the boxsets, they were discounted. rsigley gave me the idea to send the discs to Fox to get replacements, but i was like “eh, i’d rather cry about it :bluu:”
also i like how Firefox spellchecker is like, “pre-production isn’t a word, but 20thCenturyFox is a word.” come on, buddy
