I didnt even know they made a remake for The Thing until now.
I found this clip and looks pretty scary… dont watch it if you’re squeamish…
(reminds me of dream catcher in some ways).

The 2011 Thing is a prequel to the 1982 film…it ends where the '82 version begins. I didn’t mind it, it does suffer a bit of the high speed horror delivery of this day and age, but I had to give them points for trying so hard to make it sync up with Carpenter’s '82 version.
I’ve only seen the last hour of the 1982 original. It obviously has far better actors than the 2011 version but its unintentionally funny at times. So the 82 version starts with everyone already aware that there’s an Alien around?
Edit: Wasnt there also a 1950’s version of The Thing?
nope, movie starts off with the main cast not knowing anything but quickly realize something is up
I don’t want to go too off top here, but did anyone watch The Thing (2011)? I was pretty excited to see one of my favorite horror films get a prequel that explains the backstory behind the '82 film, but the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are pretty negative. Waiting to watch the DVD version when it comes out.
so what exactly is the connection between the 2 films? how does the 82 version continue on from the 2011 prequal?
No idea, I haven’t seen the new one
The 2011 prequal ends with one of the characters leaving in a helicopter flying after a Thing infected dog to hunt and kill it. The original; movie opens with the helicopter crashing and the American installation taking the dog in.
The Norwegian camp that Macready and the Doc explore in the 1982 version is the setting for the 2011 prequel, so all the stuff they see is accounted for in the prequel. The reviews weren’t great, but I thought is halfway decent, mostly because it wasn’t a remake. But, like the Alien flicks, it’s a premise you wind up circling by it’s nature. Better than most of the other horror revivals though, I’ll snag it on DVD when it hits(should be shortly as well)
1950’s The Thing(From Outer Space is added to the title often after the '82 version) takes the basic premise of scientists in Antarctica finding a frozen alien, but in this version it’s a plant that turns into a Vegetable Frankenstein and stalks around. Great for a 50s movie, but discards the mimic aspect of the alien totally.
lol so I watched the movie today, I enjoyed it but only one problem. It’s a prequel but remake at the same time. What I mean is, pretty much everything that happens in the '82 version happens in this movie. Cool ship though.
Yeah, when you have a “if this gets out we’re totally fucked” type of creature, you’re kinda painting yourself into a corner in terms of where you can go. The effects were nice in the prequel, but there wasn’t anything on the level like the '82 dog cage sequence. Aside from the chestburster in Alien, that’s one of my favorite monster reveals ever. Damn shame what they did those dogs.
“What the hell is it?”
“I dunno, but it’s big, and it’s pissed off”
I read that in a lot of review for that movie. A lot of people called it a remake despite being a prequel.
Thats exactly what I thought. Even the cast look similar.
Well I’m glad Prometheus isn’t going to be that sort ‘prequel’ lol
My friend just posted this on facebook
OK so I just now learned that there are sexual elements to the Xenomorph’s design, and am trying to read up more about them.
…and apparently the tail of the one in Alien was supposed to be it’s penis-

…and finally an interesting read:
I thought this was well known, maybe it’s just because I came across Giger before I came across the movies :wonder:
Not seen this before, glad they removed it just looks completely wrong.
The head is a penis aswell, everything is a penis when it comes to Giger http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1C2GGLS_enGB358&q=hr giger alien&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=2244l7121l0l7559l14l12l0l2l2l1l1105l4135l0.1.2.2.1.2.0.1l11l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1289&bih=830&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Hl3aTqa0D8Ws8gOf2MX5DQ
Blast from the past - http://kotaku.com/hr-giger/
If you guys want to get into the series you need to check out the Quadrilogy for the documentaries, they’re like 3-4 hours per movie, interviews with Giger,Scott,Dan O’Bannon on the alien’s design, hundreds of production and concept galleries, interviews with nearly everyone involved in the series except Fincher. It’s crazy in depth box set.
I haven’t seen that extended scene with Brett before. Good lord that is bad. They made the right decision to neuter that scene and get rid of the alien’s giant penis. Been a while since I’ve seen Alien, but had that scene stayed in there, they essentially blew what the Alien actually looked like way early in the movie. Also, why was it pretty much hovering in the air pretending to be Jesus?
There’s TONS of sexual imagery in Alien. The imagery was shied away from in the sequels but it’s still there.
They use that shot of the tail for Lambert’s death in the finale of the normal version…you see it coming up and it cuts just below the waist to Ripley hearing Lambert do that weird breathing/scream over the intercom.
