Saw a Japanese player post a sick trade setup on Twitter.

Setup is cr.LP xx LP Flash Chop. LP Flash Chop will trade with 3f normals. With V-Trigger, the best followup is st.HK xx VT into whatever you want. Without V-Trigger, the best follow up is st.HP xx MP Flash Chop. St.HP followup must be done immediately after the trade or else the st.HP will whiff. Against 4f normals, the LP Flash Chop will counter-hit, allowing Alex to follow up with st.LP xx LP Flash Chop.

After this ^ (any chop trade) you can also link cr.hp xx ex knee. It has to be 3cr.hp(assuming you are p1 side) to link, 1cr.hp & 2cr.hp will whiff

floe gave some reaaaly nice tip in the latest capcom floetalk. do v skill and just do s.mk buffering vtrigger. trigger will only activate on hit and if range is good you get follow up with s.hp

I do this, but with cr. MP. If I have the range, HP->Sledgehammer->EX Backdrop for kill or EX Slash for wake-up game. If it is outside of s. HP range, I just EX Slash into wake-up.

Problem with that is anyone with a brain will see what you’re trying to do and just sweep CC/jump in on you.

I do it with cr.MP too, but I try and hit confirm it instead. V trigger will activate even when you hit them on block and when I misjudge I feel like I pop VT too early.

I need to use VT more. my parrying sucks right now and afraid to even attempt using it online with how laggy some games get.

I was practising Parry vs common things like Ryu b.HK, st.LK xx M-Tatsu and Chun Li’s instant air Legs. Got to the point where I hit it every time. Took it online and ended up so mad. It doesn’t matter if you hit it every single time you go for it in training/offline, at some point you’re going to get rollback and it will get you killed.

I will often activate V-Trigger off of cr.MP/st.MK but trying to land Sledgehammer from those is asking to get blown up. First of all, if they block and you’re already buffering it in, you’re eating a full punish. Secondly, for it to work from Hard Hit you need to not let them block anything and if they’re smart, they’re going to block it. Unless you’re going to back off to activate V-Skill again or bank on getting a counter hit, Sledgehammer will get blocked and you’re back to eating a full punish.

I wonder if at some point they’ll allow you to cancel the sledgehammer startup. Would probably be too powerful, but his best tool is really held back by online play. Parry is really one of the reasons I don’t think you can just damn Alex to low tier for eternity, it’s a very powerful tool, especially in a pseudo-grappler’s moveset.

Canceling Sledge Hammer would be so godlike. He’d pretty much turn into “SF3/SF4: The Character” once he hit VT

Only way I could see it getting a cancel would be if it was really slow. Like, when you cancel he goes into V-Skill animation or something.

I don’t want a cancel for sledgehammer, Alex isn’t about dash cancel shenanigans. What I DO want is for sledgehammer to not require a full charge to become unblockable, that way it’s an actual mixup. Right now you can just wait and block or jump back and punish on full charge, there’s no mixup. Ryu’s unblockable FB’s work because he can reduce the charge time with EX AND they’re safe on block if he decides to release early. Alex doesn’t have that luxury, so sledgehammer ends up being purely a combo tool.

I agree and I don’t think he should be but my point was that charging up Sledgehammer makes people jump because they don’t want to be guard broken. If Sledgehammer had a cancel mechanic it would have to be slow to stop shenanigans like what I posted.
When I said “The Dream” I just meant that was how it would work if he had a fast cancel of some kind and it would be godly.

You are right that there is no mixup with Sledgehammer but I’m fine with that. If someone stands there and lets you charge up for longer than a second (68 frames) then they just don’t know and you can bet it’s not going to happen again but the alternative is not making it unblockable before it has full charge.

At this point I’m fairly certain that there is only one way to get a full charge set up and that is from a Crush Counter Sweep. (67 frames of knockdown advantage vs 68 frames of startup). At least it’s the only way without someone going out of their way to not quick rise.

Unless it’s a VT cancel I usually will land Sledgehammer off CC sweep. It’s such a nasty set up

Well if you already have V-Trigger active and you manage the CC/HH sweep you get to just stand there and charge it. I’ll have to work out the frames on CC/HH Sweep, VTC, charge as I’m sure that will whiff. Need to test that out next chance I get.

Seriously though, I hope that this, for the most part, dispels the myth that Alex gets nothing from his anti airs.
