Alex Matchup Thread

Post all of Alex’s good/bad matchups and individual strategies against each character. This would really help everyone learning Alex(including me). thx

Other than Sean, Alex doesn’t really have any good match-ups. He matches up okay/even with most characters, though.

In general, you don’t have high priority pokes or safe moves (jab Elbow Slash is kind of safe but still not that safe), so you’ll have to mix up your highs, lows, and grabs.

Alex vs Ken

When palying footies, stay out of his c.mk range at all times. Thankfully alex’s c.mp & s.mk go over ken’s c.mk, so use that;However, a good ken will wait for you to whiff the move first so they can walk foward c.mkxxSAIII. So, when you poke out a move, ALWAYS make it hit, even if it’s blocked because alex has slow recover time if missed. It’s ken’s c.mp, s.mp that you have to worry about, that shit will just out prioritize most of the time. It’s not the safest thing, but f.fp is good move when at about jab length away because it will hit ken crouching too. But as i said it ain’t the safest thing so I only use it when ken has no super. Same goes for alex’s c.fk, it’s good to use it at sweep distance, but if whiffed it’s a long recovery time.

When ken has no meter, you can throw out c.mp & s.mk without fear of missing & taking bing damage so keep the pressure on ken as long as you can. You can’t out prioritize ken, but since alex has longer limbs than ken just stay right outside his c.fk/s.fk range. The best thing to do is wait for ken to whiff a move, then go for an attack. You have 3 or 4 options or so.

  1. Punish a whiffed move with alex’s c.mp s.mk c.fk. The problem with this, is that ken has like, little to no reaction time off his whiffed moves so you gotta be quick, like you just gotta know it will miss & hit ASAP off reaction.

2.Dash foward kara-throw/LP powerbomb. I like the kara-throw better, i believe it comes out faster the powerbomb. Plus, this gives alex that momentum to start mixing up his high/low/grab game. This is also a good tatic to do out of the blue too, but if they have a super it’s kinda of a gamble.

3.Jump towards them. The jump game brings a whole new set of options, so i’m only going to hit a couple of them. A lot of kens moves will react before you get there so ithe safest thing to do is empty jump just to keep the pressure on. Empty jump:throw, powerbomb, c.lk->kara-throw, ect. If you jump in mk you can tick throw afterwards. Or jump in late with a mp so that it misses & you can land throw. But since ken has his SRK it’s safest to just empty jump just un case so you can parry.

4.EX Elbow. Even from half the screen this move will punish people who just throw out random attacks. If ken has no meter you are completely safe, but it can be punished with his SAIII, unlike his lk.elbow which is safe even from super. Also, sharge down as soon as you ex elbow so if ken moves at all you can stomp him.

Random Tips
-S.FP will tie out with SRK
-EX Stomp will hit every time if ken throws a fireball
-F.FP will beat ken’s air-hurricane kick

EX Elbow can punish low foward xx hadoken… ON HIT!

VS CHUN

Headbutt grabs through Lightning legs CLEAN.

Yeah, but no one does low forward to hadoken except in the very beginning of the match and they usually make sure Alex has no bar before doing so. A smat player only combos into EX hadokens or super cancels the fireball into a super. Just doing c.MK to fireball doesn’t give you any frame advantage and the lack of knockdown means the opponent can go ahead and hit you right back. There’s really no point of comboing low forward into hadoken by itself unless you know the opponent won’t have anything to punish with.

Oh and grabbing through lightning legs sounds like fun. Too bad he can’t grab b.HP. :lol:

Okay, so I was being a little too scrubby w/alex against someone who’s pretty good. The only thing going for me was the random factor…2 hyperbombs ftw. But of course he jumped out of them for the rest of our matches. I still think it’s his best SA, b/c it only gives you one less ex move, but a much more deadly super.

In terms of the ken matches, I see KSK do s.mk to some degree. Is that normal useful at all? It seems that a ken could just dash up and c.mk xx super.

You’ve gotta know when it’s safe to use it. Which is basically from a far enough distance where he can’t just dash in once and do c.MK to super to begin with. As far as HyperBomb goes…Alex uses soo much damned EX that you’ll never get a chance to use the super any ways. Plus, it’s way too easy to get out of. You really have to use it like once every 5 matches and then the rest of the time just keep a full bar every now and then for scare factor. You actually get more of an advantage by not using the super than using it. The fear of getting thrown by the super will make people do stupid stuff and that’s when you can hit them with s.MK to EX flash or tick power bomb.

You pretty much gotta be one with Alex to play with him. Ex FootStomp is move people seem to over look usually. If someone is trying to nail you with something when you are getting up, sneak that up on them.

Hit his limbs. I’m sure Alex’s st.strong will beat Necro’s st.strong and try st.short to beat his cr.forward. Also try to use his Flash Chops to hit his limbs even though you might whiff some of them and EX tackle when he whiffs. Don’t jump in recklessly and he can punish your EX tackles with a stocked SA1/3 on block. I haven’t had the chance to play against a necro but this is what I would do.

I’m guessing you’re talking about a necro that does lots of hooks and drills? Learn to red parry hooks and its not hard to red parry them. I wouldn’t stick out attacks much since he could hit you with his faster attacks then canceling them to SA3 or much to say he baits out your attacks. I think st.strong will beat his drills. To get out of the corner is tough against necro. I usually do Alex’s dive to escape Yun’s corner shit but necro has better AA attacks. If I’m stuck in blocking postition for a while I try to find the best time to do a stomp. Dunno if that helps

Strats vs Makoto?

Versus makoto, you’re going to be going for lots of throws. I like to play a keep away game with pokes, because its very risky playing in close and rushing downsince she can wake up grab and get the offensive situation reversed, then follow it with command grabs and super. Play this sort of like chun, in that if you’re going to rush do it before she has meter, using stnading forward a lot and towards and strong to keep her out. Do your normal anti air game of towards and fierce, move back and shoulder, dash back and towards and strong, or jump and fierce/rh. go for lots of ticks and fake ticks into powerbomb in the corner, they wont be expecting this much. Good fake out fake tick tactics include standing jab early whiff>standing strong ex slash, cr. short ex flash (won’t combo but barely anyone can block the ex in time). just play it safe and don’t abuse ex tackle. Also, it helps to standing jb powerbomb tick her every now and then. Basically wait for her mistakes, missed hayates and bait that stupid uppercut if they’re dumb enough to use it. Watch for her Ex overhead kick and just dont block too much or it’s command grab death.

I’m sure you know this but, make sure you look for whiffed rh from ken, it’s a free ex tackle for alex.

Also, remember not to abuse standing forward against makoto, she can dash in and get a free high stun headbutt grab or command grab.
