Alex Matchup Thread

You can headbutt the recovery of every blocked Hayate(Non-Ex). I’ve also seen people throw her out of EX Chop after a blocked cr.lk. Maybe something worth testing.

You really shouldn’t abuse anything at all with Alex outside of stomps (against specific characters any ways). Against Makoto the only poke you should really be throwing around is s.MP to build meter and force her to dash at the wrong time. c.MP and s.MK should be used sparingly just to add damage as you’re zoning her out. To play Alex at high level play you always have to be coming up with something new and changing your gameplay. None of his good normals (outside of s.MP) can be abused repeatedly because of crap recovery.

His overall playstyle isn’t super solid (he has a lot of stuff that can get punished) so you have to change pace to keep the fight in your favor. You’ll probably find yourself taking to the air more often than not in this matchup to use Alex’s strong air normals to continue zoning out Makoto. She has a tough time dealing with deep j.HK/j.HP especially from a distance where dashing will cause her to get smacked.

As for whether Alex has any good matchups, he beats Q like probably 6-4 or 6.5-3.5. Alex’s jumping attacks are too much for Q to deal with, his speed makes taunting difficult, and once Q is knocked down and Alex is on top of him, Q has a hard time getting out. Q wants to run away from you, and you want to run up to him and hit him in the face, so, try doing that.

He also matches pretty well against Urien and Remy.

So I was watching KSK play some casuals, and, against MutantXP’s Necro, KSK would jump in, purposely whiff a j.hp, and then lp powerbomb.

Don’t try this against Ken, though (I tried and failed against Arturo and Mattxchin); he’ll SRK you in the face for free.

Against Remy? How? problem with Remy is the keep away and sonic boom spamming.:wonder:

EX headstomp on reaction stops that pretty damn quick.

Yeah…Remy can’t zone like he wants because fireballs cause Remy to become stationary and that’s what Alex wants. All Alex has to do is have enough bar for an EX and if Remy throws a sonic boom…on reaction you EX stomp and he gets owned. Free knockdown and setup for damage. Remy takes hits like a baby and Alex only needs to hit him like 4 times to stun him. On the other hand…Remy also dishes damage pretty sparingly and Alex can take hits like a bull. Remy will pretty much never stun Alex unless a straight up miracle happens and doing any real damage to him will take a lot of work. Basically…Alex wins this matchup because of his ability to work around fireballs with EX headstomp and basically just being able to take a lot of hits. If Alex didn’t have EX headstomp though it would be a much harder matchup (aka Hugo).

Ok most people dont believe this but I used to be a hardcore alex player (still am somehow) and from what I know there’s not really a point or guide for each matchup cause alex is 100% mixup and improvisation, unlike any of the top tiers alex cant rely on this little “something” (for example, yun can rely in just gaining meter) for a matchup, so you have to be guessing most of the time

if your execution gets good enough to use partitions nice you can do pretty well, but you gotta know your moves a lot
I wanna make an Alex Mix ups video, damm no editor :stuck_out_tongue:
But yeah, my advice for you is to first of all know what your opponent will be relyin in (this can go from a corner game, to zoning etc) and outsmart that, thats the only way.

The goo thing bout alex is his stamina and he can make a mounstrous comeback in 3 seconds but you gotta take lots of risks.
But mmmm you can always play Yun too :lovin:

No way Alex beats Remy, the worst it is for Remy is even. Only a stupid Remy player would use sonic booms when Alex has down charge for a headstomp. Alex can conceal the charge, but it’s still plain when he can do it. And it’s not like Remy can only zone with the booms, his normals and SAI can zone Alex out well too. If Alex gets in, his normal mixup shenanigans aren’t as effective as they usually are because of Remy’s excellent wakeup options. The reason this matchup isn’t more of a baste is that Alex only needs to hit Remy a few times before the match is his, and once he gets in, it’s hard for Remy to get him out.

How does ORO matchup againist Alex

Oro has the advantage because of his poking game. I’ll let someone else explain it better though.

Someone plz elaborate, If someone could explain what oro should do againist alex and what alex should do againist oro, that would be great. also technical data is good.

That’s what I’m referring to. I’m having a hard time timing the EX stomp because your opponent sees that your charging.

As for urien, how can it be a good matchup?

Urien and Remy are good matchups for Alex. They both don’t have an answer for a blocked EX tackle, so you can almost abuse them. Urien’s wake up is not well. Remy has short stun bar and can’t take damage. Its just a plus that you can EX stomp over their fbs.

necro vs alex stuff …please

+1 :wgrin:

Oro stuff would be better : )

Oro destroys Alex. According to top Japanese players, it’s 7:3 Oro, and, according to my own empirical evidence, it’s more like 9:1 (at least for me). Oro is just small and and quick, and he can easily dodge a lot of your attacks by not even doing anything. Plus, his standing roundhouse beats everything and does massive stun damage. The only real plus I can see for Alex in this match-up is that (I think) it’s a little bit harder to juggle Alex because of small timing differences.

I spoke with ReNiC once after I lost to an Oro player in a tournament. His advice: “I’ve never faced an Oro in a tournament setting before, man. Sorry.” Nice. :shake:

Yeah…it’s a tough match. This match on paper is just not in Alex’s favor. Even when you knock him down he always has EX upper to mess up your wake up game. Him being retarted small means it’s hard to set up jump in combos on him and he can kinda feel free to dash and bob his way around your shit. Using stomps against Oro is risky cuz one wrong timed stomp will have him dashing on the other side of you and then you get hit by s.MP. To win this match you basically have to create knockdowns and capitalize as much as possible. You’re pretty much going to have to deal with his annoying zoning game for a good bit of the match and you’ll have to take risks at some points and parry a poke to get damage in. Luckily Oro has to be right next to you to verify any real damage. His pokes do add up though.

In general Alex has a lot of matchups that in order to win he generally must just outsmart the opponent to do it. He has the mix ups and the damage potential to do it. Alex vs. Oro is just one of those matchups where there’s no surefire way to beat him because statistically he beats you. You just kinda have to capitalize when you can and force knockdowns. The less Oro is moving around…the better.
