I really hope we do see more skin and hair color changing costumes. I loved that Cammy’s color 2 used to change her eye color in the Beta. SFV really needs to step up it’s alt color game.
I don’t think it makes him fundamentally different. He doesn’t seem to be nearly as different as Mika, Birdie, or Nash are, but he may be as different as Dictator is.
I think an important thing to realize about Alex in 3S is that he has a QCF move, a DP move, a charge back move, a charge down move, TWO HCB moves,
and even some unique command normals like his back+HP hit-grab. He’s got 6 specials and he’s coming into a game where most characters have 3 or 4, it’s just too much. In a more streamlined game like SFV there’s no way they’d bring him in without reworking him.
That said, from a gameplay perspective, his new jumping command grab will replace DDP without much difference I would think, and if it’s projectile invincible on EX at least, it can serve a similar function to boot as well. The biggest question is whether his lariat will effectively replace slash, since that’s the biggest loss to his toolbox.
Overall Capcom has taken unfocused characters like Birdie and Mika and given them much more obvious gameplans, clearer strengths, and clearer weaknesses. Alex was a much better character gameplay-design-wise than Alpha Birdie, (I think Alex is a charge grappler done right) but he still suffered from some of the same issues that birdie did by not having all of his moves work together sensibly. As an aggressive brawler character Alex wanted to walk forward, but as a charge character he needed to charge, and it makes the character a bit harder to play and understand. You don’t really know what you should be doing at first with him. That division of his options really lowered his competitiveness on a pro level as well.
Just like with all the characters in SFV, capcom’s design focus is to push them more and more towards what makes them unique, and give them clear gamplay focus. So new Alex maybe won’t be as versatile as he was before, but hey, he’ll more than likely be a whole lot better in a competitive sense than he was before. So there’s that.
TL;DR: New Alex could be less versatile, but he’ll also probably be a lot better.
(But please, let us all just take a moment of silence for how sick the animation on slash elbow is)
