Alex General Discussion: "At ease, loo-suh!" The Alex SFV Thread

Ha! i alternate between it and default color 4. Gotta rep Orlando City Soccer Club colors.

Omg so much this.

I can’t believe some of the stuff that these players are doing, it’s like bruh, this is street fighter, do you even know what street fighter is?? And then if their stupid stuff lands and I get so triggered I basically just put down my controller and let them take my points lol.

I was also winning most of my games when I was just playing intuitively, but the more I’ve looked up set ups and mix ups and tried to learn all of these legit tactics, the more I’ve started to lose lol. It doesn’t help that I’ve hardly seen a character outside of Mika, Ken, Ryu, and Nash in the past week.

Art said one time, he never respects anyone online until they make him respect them. He just assumes they’re terrible and have no AA until they prove him otherwise. That seems like a winning proposition at this point in the game.

I think my biggest weakness by far is failing to follow up AA jab with enough real damage right now. It feels like AA is one of the parts of Alex’s game you really have to know. People just keep jumping in on me, they don’t learn. I had this Nash that would just jab twice and cross-up, every. time. I was AAing him and he’d still do it, and even though I was stopping it most times, every time he’d combo from a crossup he’d get a ton more damage than I would Anti Airing.

The worst part is that playing against these people just isn’t fun, even when you’re winning.

As far as Alex’s viability, snake isn’t the only one placing high in tourneys with Gief. Low tier is not that low tier in this game, so as a casual player I’m not that concerned about it. Sometimes Alex feels like a struggle, but it’s definitely a struggle I think will make me better at the game in the long run, unlike relying on some other characters ā€œcheap stuffā€ for an acceptable amount of wins and never improving past that.

I disagree a bit. In the lead-up to Alex I was playing Gief a bit, and although it was a pain in the ass the majority of the time vs good players, I never once thought ā€œman he feel’s incompleteā€. Gief has answers for a lot of things, and for shit that gives him trouble it’s a simple matter of working you way in (or not) and running out the clock. Alex felt the same in 3s, not terribly great but never felt like he was bad because he was weak.

xD
I just like Purple.
Made me smile when I saw the thumbnails.

I completely agree with what Arturo said. If I start off trying to play smart and the person I’m playing against jumps at me 6 times in 20 seconds, getting anti aired each time, it makes me not want to play the match. If I’m streaming I don’t want to sit there and sound like an dick because I’m saying ā€œThis person is a moron.ā€ but it’s what ends up happening. I would rather get absolutely destroyed by someone who knows what they’re doing than win against someone who is playing like it’s their first day ever playing a fighting game.
It hurts me deeply when I see people like that who are in gold rank or higher. It’s these people I want to invite to a Lounge and do a first to 10 with just so I can try and instil some semblance of footsies or neutral game.
Unless they’re Mika players… Random Mika’s are by far the most frustrating. Mostly because you can’t tell a good Mika from a bad Mika until after around 4-5 games. That’s not me bitching about the character, just that her neutral game is, from my POV, worse than ours without V-Trigger and it can take a while to see how that person actually plays (Many Mika’s, even good ones, rely on V-Trigger to do the job of neutral for them and I’ve seen even good Mika’s mashing on f.MP).

Anti Air Jab follow ups -
So I think this eventually is going to make or break us. I’ve been trying to put together a video going over our options regarding height of the opponent when we anti air but I’ve been sick since last Sunday. This is top of my list of things I want to do when I’m not dying of ā€œMan-Fluā€.
I’m am a big believer in dash, cr.LK, st.LP xx LP-Flash. My tests showed that the timing worked out rather well after an anti air at most heights and could cross under depending on range. I had Ryu set to st.LP (3 frame) for testing purposes and I’d say at least 8/10 times I’d get the cr.LK to counter hit his st.LP with no manual timing.

I’ll hopefully have a video up by Wednesday

2:28 I didn’t know this setup after stomp.

Very interesting. I’ll try that out!

I’ve been watching MDZ Ricky, and he’s been doing well with the character, he feels Alex is very strong outside of a few major weaknesses. In his oppinion the character is basically ā€œBalrog with a Command Grabā€, which I thought was an odd take. He was a Balrog main before. I noticed he never goes for Powerbomb on wakeup at first, always meaty buttons, and after MP and LP flash he always goes for buttons and not throws. Always the meaty. And then if he sees that people are blocking it every time, then he starts throwing in Powerbombs.

He does tend to meaty Powerbomb after AA jab a lot however.

His overview of Alex’s gameplan is to play the slow game using Alex’s long normals to keep your opponent out until they open themselves up, because Alex only needs one really good chance to get in and do damage, start running his Mixups and maybe get stun. He also said basically, if you don’t punish every jump in you will lose.

I think that’s why AA is so essential for Alex, his ground game is top notch, but if you’re gonna get your opponent to play it, you have to make them stop jumping first.

That is pretty damn cool. I need to watch some more Japanese Alex I think.
So a quick trip to the frame data tells me that MP-Flash leaves Alex at +4 after LK Stomp and +3 after Ex. MK = 0 and HK = -1. However after MK/HK you can use LP-Flash and it will be +5/4.

Unrelated - While reading the frame data I got distracted and found something. After a V-Reversal I tend to use dash f.HP if I’ve pushed them into the corner (Had some bad experiences of it whiffing mid screen). Well slow get up always messes me up and so I looked for something to do after a f.HP and it turns out the answer is - V-Reversal, Dash, f.HP, f.HP, f.HP. I know it sounds stupid but it will hit on the 3rd frame of their wake up. (86 frames of knockdown. Dash (19 frames total), f.HP (30 frames total), f.HP (30 frames total), f.HP (10 frame start up) = 89)
Not exactly ground breaking but useful if you V-Reversal them into the corner.

I can see where he’s coming from. As a Balrog main he’s going to have Slash always charged and LK-Slash is great when pressuring.
He’s right about the anti airing and by extension not using Power Bomb early. I will usually Power Bomb once or twice or not at all throughout a bo3 in ranked. I don’t feel I have enough time to convince them to stay on the ground in that amount of time. People will keep jumping because the pay off of us getting the anti air (30 damage) to them hitting us with it and getting a combo (around 200) is worth the gamble. That and See rant from earlier.

(Meant to add this to previous post but pressed send because 11:55pm. Sorry for double post :frowning: )

Haha this sounds amazing.

HELICOPTEEEERRR

I wish I had a reason to use regular knee smash outside of corner combos

thanx man

If I could be bothered to edit this and add sound effects, Alex would be screaming ā€œDemacia!!ā€ but I’m lazy.

@soncis No worries man. I know some of it sounds stupid but the main thing is to not respect your opponent until they make you. They sure as hell won’t respect you until you make them.

you actually hit the nail on the head on all points and jonmkl to :stuck_out_tongue:

How do I fight against Mika, Laura and Fang?

She’s a tough one. You need st.LP anti air down. Stops all of her jump ins and it beats out her charged HK. If you land a Flash Chop, unless she EX Shooting Peach (dunno the name), you are pretty free to hit another st.MP x lp.Flah Chop pretty free. Up back helps to get out of certain mix ups. Don’t rely on it too much for they’ll start hitting you with Wingless Airplane.

Her LK > MP target combo is -5, try and spot when its the actual target combo

Only m.chop let’s you go for another St.mp xx chop, otherwise she can stuff with St.lp from your +2 chops

Hmm starting to realize that the Alex is bad crowd are kinda right. Mika is a better designed grappler.
No 3 frame normals, 6 frame command grab, - on hit command grab, and no reliable anti air is a bit too many negatives. You’re basically helpless vs shotos on offense other than constant v reversal. V trigger is really his saving grace.

Command isn’t minus on hit… It’s +15.

I mean after a dash in. Essentially everytime you land it outside of the corner you lose momentum. Mika has a +3 command grab anywhere on screen.

Mika doesn’t have that cr.mp doe :sunglasses:
