On the topic of charge, is there a way to hold charge when quickrising? I find it annoying being limited on wakeup because of the gameās mechanicsā¦
I agree. Heās going to have to rely on a pretty fair amount of gimicks to confuse his opponent. After switching from R. Mika itās definitely a lot more difficult to go confuse the opponent. He isnāt nearly as auto pilot as Mika is.
At this point Iām looking for ways to utilize his headbutt and stomp a lot more offensively, because defensivelyā¦they kinda suck. Not sure how I feel about him yet. I havenāt exhausted all of his tools/gimmicks quite yet.
I feel you, itās almost so-bad-itās-good territory so I use it. Itās not as ugly as his story costume imo cuz it at least modifies that mcdonaldās hair
Donāt need a write up to say heās a neutral heavy character with only average whiff punish options and not great walk speed. Character can still do work, like everyone, though.
Couple of more things Iāve found out, you can AA with s.hp though its abit wonky timing, not saying its good but its another option. You need to use it kinda early. Another good way of dealing with jump ins is just mk.slash to go under them and avoid it. Never really occured to me to use it in this way, its similar to karins dash or using lauras vtrigger dash to avoid jump ins. Puts you at a decent space advantage to not get tagged but not too far away.
EDIT: I just want to throw out there that I love this character, I was not enjoying the game before hand because I felt like none of the characters really clicked. Liking a character really makes learning so much more fun. Just uploaded a vid of me bouncing a Vega trololol.
Yeah, his jump in game feels a bunch weaker because he doesnāt have anything like j.lp in this game. The only jump in normal
he can tick off of is j.lk, and itās a short stubby easy to AA move, the rest he has to rely on st.lp x powerbomb/st.mp ticks. Heās also not as mobile and āfree-flowingā as Iād describe him in 3s. Better character though? Arguably, but not as fun.
Heās also less unique, he feels like a Mika/Necalli remix only with better oki setups and built in mixups but no 3f normals/no dp /no āgreatā trigger (his is good though, being able to confirm into a mp chop mixup off of a poke is pretty great). And blah blah blah. I felt like all his jump normals would be the same, because Mika/Necalli and the rest that kinda sorta feel the niche had mediocre jump game, but they didnāt for some reason.
On the plus side all his mixup stuff also serves as kinda good anti-fireball stuff, but Iām still miffed all his chops are so slow.
And how j.mk is so stubby compared to 3s. The only really great jump button he has is j.hk I think.
AA aside, whatās his best answer to up-close pressure? I was using cr.lp but looking at the framedata cr.lk looks better. About the same range (or a little more even). Has an extra active frame, a better frame in recovery, and then you have the cr.lk > st.lp x lp/ex chop combo, I think itās his best defensive button (and poke too).
Oh, and letās talk about EX Headbutt. Another useless EX move or a good one? Bigger damage/bigger stun and fastest startup, but it doesnāt add anything to his mixup that ex stomp doesnāt, besides the damage/stun. I guess itās only here for a round ender/stun?
One final thing! Iāve been using lp headbutt (held close to you) to defend against dash in throw. Works a lot like lk stomp eating people going in for the throw in 3s, anyone else use it for this? Actually, maybe thatās what EX headbutt would be good forā¦
Iām frankly disappointed in Alex. Heās playable, but his footsies donāt make up for his weaknesses, nor is his upclose game particularly good considering his speed. Iām sure some people will make him work but theyāll do it in spite of Alex not because of him imo. Would be nice to be proven wrong but unless thereās some really fancy tech yet to be discovered with him that counters all the yet to be discovered tech with the other characters, I doubt it.
I canāt imagine any player style that would succeed with Alex that wouldnāt do better with another character. That really pisses me off.
Consider this, Iām a Mika player wanting to switch because I didnāt really care that much for Mika. I wanted to play Alex. Now Iām playing KARIN! Hey with Mika I had to touch you up close to get the big damage. Now you just lose when I touch you anytime. #thankscapcom
SFV characters in a nutshell, if youāre doing good with one character, youāll do ever better with a similar one (but better).
And what footsies? Half of his moves are either too slow or get beaten by other moves pretty often (like st.MK, this move isnt as good as it looks). Plus heās slow, big (gets crossup as easily as Zangief), has poor defenses (his anti-airs arent reliable at all where it matters) and his CA has some absurd scalling that really is a turn off because he does no damage from combos that use it!
His V-Trigger/Sledgehammer has so few combo options that it really hurts his potential off the rare and hard earned long ranged confirms⦠and outside combos, good luck making use of Sledgehammer/Parry.
But can or someone do well with him? Definitely⦠but heās still a weak character by concept and heās not fit to compete in this game because heās lacking and feels too much like an incomplete character right now.
He reminds me alot of Vanilla Abel actually.
