I was winning like 60% of my matches in casual. I switched to ranked and got a ton of lag and whatnot and never felt like going back and changing it. I don’t value LP anyway.

No talk of the majestic Elbow? One of his best moves on top of EX stomp.

Elbow’s alright, but not really impressive outside of hitconfirms for corner carry/safe blockstrings. I mean, it still gets hit out by most pokes, so someone who knows the matchup isn’t gonna really respect it.

Great gap closer, can use it for true blockstrings and tight frame traps, good corner carry, +3 on hit leading to st.mp trap follow up.

I think it’s pretty good, obviously it’s usage in neutral should be very sporadic and you should never catch a rhythm with it otherwise you’re getting poked out of it all day long.

Dash up power bomb absolutely works. It’s a classic grappler mix up game now except you also have the option of st.mp as trap if they decide to hit buttons instead of jump. That’s needed with the days of 2 frame command throws behind us. At the end of the day it remains a guessing game but that’s the grapplers gift and curse.

He does have strong buttons in the neutral but I think he’s gonna involve being a little wild at times. Controlled chaos of sorts.

Saw that working for nash’s v trigger well. Alex might have the best and most consistent answer I’ve seen it thus far that isn’t simply jumping away.

st.mp also stuffs about all his command pokes clean, cr.mp and st.mp are the shit for counter pokes in his arsenal mid range generally

So everyone’s talking about combos and mixups, but what are you guys’ preferred punishes? His MP feels a lot slower than his close MK was back in the day when it comes to squeezing inbetween your opponents buttons. I’ve been using cLP > cLP > EX Flash on a lot.

Edit: he says, just as multiple posts mentioning punishes slide in before him.

One thing I learnt last night was that you can cancel any normal (apart from overhead) into sledgehammer, this is probably common knowledge but just an FYI for everyone. It certainly adds value to an already flexible vtrigger.

So after 100 games with him I have 50 wins 50 losses…
I think you guys are right the hardest match is Chun and can’t really say anything about Alex vs Sim I only played vs 2 sins which I feel didn’t know how to deal with Ex Shoulder. Once I was in with VT they just got wrecked. St.Hp VTC S.Hp sexyness.
Shame I lost so much LP but I think it’s been worth it ( haha only kidding, I don’t care about LP. I’d rather learn a char through ranked and play people’s mains than potentially going up against someone else who’s trying a new char.)
All round I’m liking Alex.

Stand strong into stun gun headbutt is godlike. people will get caught by that all day.

Also after power bomb you can light elbow slash to beat 3 frame jabs. it’ll get dp’d/ punished all day tho. If they’re expecting it you can stun gun though.

After AA Knee you can get a meaty heavy slash that’ll beat lots of stuff and be safe.

The first thing I tried to do when I loaded was a charge partitioned dash into stomp. The game doesn’t even let you dash from crouch

Also, Alex is hardly a unique character in this game. He’s way too similar to other characrers.

I was at 6800LP. I then decided to use Alex in Ranked. I’m now at 5500 LP.

This dude, Frylock, man. This dude. This DUDE… He’s hard and not in a sexual tyranasaur way. His anti-airs are so bad. I’m fighting idiots who are mindlessly jumping in, I do LP to AA, and nope! Glitch Gremlin say’s “Fuck you.” and it either trades in their favor or their shit beats my move. So you’re like “Okay, let’s try cr.HP.” And that move has 12/13 frames startup. It feels longer than that. You cannot react with this move. It’s too fookin slow. It’s also unsafe on block. I’m fighting a Karin who wears the Magneto special kid helmet, this dude plays keepaway, he doesn’t know what to do to get in so he throws out Ressenha from fullscreen. Can’t AA with cr.HP. You can AA with Jab but it’s Karin with meter, so you can’t pressure the internet’s favorite waifu or she EX Reversal’s you. So you use Air Knee Smash, nope, has startup. It’s all anticipation. So nerds who pay Gootecks for lessons will be like “Oh, I’m all anticipation!” Nah son. Nah.

The only good AA that Frylock has is the Lariat or t.HP. It has 10 frames startup like Bison’s cr.HP but at least it’s safe on block. It’s better then his shit-tier Jab. Seriously, I fookin hate Dhalsim’s Jab AA but this dude fookin needs it BAD.

So I figured out a good AA, it’s the Lariat. I don’t understand why if it Crush Counters in the air, haha gotchyou git gud, I can’t combo into Air Knee Smash. It LOOKS like it should but no, Glitch Gremlin strikes again. You can only combo into it if you have them in the corner. You can combo off of CC Lariat with fookin Slash Elbow or I think EX only. Okay, but it’s a charge move so it’s hard as a motherfuck to do on reaction. Oops I said fuck. And why would you use meter to get a tiny bit more damage? Just get the air CC and dash in to pressure.

If they’re close and jump over to crossup, because everyone and their mother and their dog has a better crossup then Frylock, I have no idea what to do. I can block, V-Reversal, try to AA with Jab, maybe dash under? That’s it.

There’s two/three things you can do from a knockdown with Powerbomb, you can do LK Elbow or time a MP Flash Chop. But wait, San Francisco Joe is using a character with an easy reversal, so you have to back down or get fooked.

This dude lacks a good punish. If he has Super or V-Trigger then good. He buttfucks you and plants a tree, great. I said fuck again. If he doesn’t, he can only do MP into Flash or EX Flash, that’s it. San Francisco Joe knows “Oh, he landed Flash Chop. He’s going to do it again so I’m going to hit every button on the keyboard even the mouse buttons or I’m going up to kiss the sky.” You say “Oh you can Jab them in the shoulder.” But what can you do from a Jab? Just another Flash Chop.

The Stun Gun Headbutt sucks. Just sucks. It’s only going to work against kids with the Magneto helmet who watch too many Daygo videos and will just chuck mario fireballs from fullscreen. The EX Stampede is better, they can AA or jump but if I fook up and they block at least it’s plus.

That Condor Dive is bad. He should be able to do it from neutral. “Oh, I neutral jumped your fireball, surprise!” But no. Him and Necalli should be able to do their shit from neutral jumps? Why forward jump only if it’s unsafe?

Why is his crossup so bad? I thought Lady Mika and Cammy had the worst crossup in the game. Cammy’s crossup is monkeybutts but she had hooligan tricks and a dive kick so it didn’t matter too much. Lady Mika’s is kinda bad but you can get used to the spacing. But this dude, it’s like I’m Keenan screaming “WHHHHYYYYYYY?” If you’re a tiny, itty bitty, little bit off it whiffs. Why Capecod? Is this a joke? Was Jamie Kennedy employed by Capcom and he just X’d us? Why? Who okay’d this? “Are you okay?” No, I’m not. This dude may as well not even have a crossup. And that would be okay if this game had trip guard and I could at least block and not worry about being hit by lows into whatever.

This dude needs buffs. Just give him a better crossup. That’s all I want for Christmas. A DECENT crossup and neutral condor dive. Good. I can deal with the bad AA’s because he has three moves that let him in. Two of which are completely safe on block.

He’s like mid-tier. Because of the horrible, no good, very bad crossup, he hovers around low tier. Fang and his Conehead cosplay has a better crossup.

I disagree emphatically with many of your points.
Cross up isn’t great but in all honesty, I don’t feel you should be jumping in. You should be bullying them to the corner with the classic walk-block. If you get the opportunity to jump at them, like over a fireball, then j.LK is serviceable.
His st.LP anti air is actually very good. The hitbox seems to be above his arm, around the same height as his head.
Stun Gun isn’t going to be used constantly, it will be situational. People are currently working on Stomp set ups and once they’ve got them, they should be able to train the opponent to block which instantly makes Stun Gun a lot better.

You’re saying he is low tier because he doesn’t have a good cross up… I can’t agree to that. Especially on day 2.
Having a good cross up isn’t what makes a character good. You said Cammy’s crossup is awful but she’s a contender for top 2 currently so…

Your anecdote with Karin. You acknowledged that you can beat out Ressenha but then you say that if they’ve got meter they’ll just wake up EX. Ok, block the EX and have yourself a free crush counter combo.
About punishing - You’re right, on day 2 people haven’t worked out the best punishes. However off of a counter hit jab (Which your anecdote about “San Francisco Joe” implied it would be since they’re mashing buttons) can link into st.MP. Not only that, after an MP-Flash, Power Bomb will grab anything that is 3 frames or slower.

Meaty st.HK blows up anything that isn’t invincible. If they reversal, you get punishes for days. VTC gives you fat plus frames to confirm a combo or mix up again.
(What defines an “easy” reversal? Invincible? As in Crush Counter punishable?)

You mean good meterless punishes? MPxxLK Elbow and HPxxMK Elbow (or HPxxMP Flash) lead to good meaties. st.LP, st.LP, cr.LPxxEX Flash is decent for small punishes, even if it costs a bar. MP Flash being +3 is strong too, since a Powerbomb will blow up non-invincible reversals. Invincible ones get rekt by blocking and getting free CCs, and CC punishes, even without meter, hit hard.

And I don’t know why you insist that the Jab is good. I timed it, I mashed it, I’m at mid-screen distance, full-screen, close-screen, NO. DENIED. Trades or beaten. It is a bad, bad AA.

Why is the Stun Gun even there if the Air Stampede does the exact same thing but the EX version is safe? It’s a worthless gimmick move. BTW, Stun Gun won’t work on a Rashid using HK Tornado. But the HK and EX Stampede work. Go ahead and try Stun Gun against a Dhalsim, he’ll noogie the shit out of you, I dare you, I DOUBLE DOGG DARE YOU.

Counter-hit Jab, okay, but you have to assume it will counter hit so you can do MP into LP Flash.

Now you say “Oh well, you can setup from MP Flash and frame trap.” Here’s the thing Jimmy Olsen, you can only do that from HP, I think maybe from MP if it counter hits, maybe? But mainly from HP and that has 10 frame startup, so you can’t really punish let’s say a sweep or a blocked Ressenha or whatever with that. So the only way to land HP is from a jump in, and his jump ins kinda suck monkeyfucks. Or on their wakeup, which can be hard because a lot of knockdowns push them away. Or Crush Counter. Maybe try to frame trap from blocked MP but again, HP has 10 frame startup and there’s dudes with 3 frame Jabs. Do the math. Jaguar. Jaguar. JAGUAR.
