I am a Hugo player and I seem to be having trouble with Akuma, It appears that I have trouble finding that little window of opportunity to attack Akuma when he is going nuts with the demon flips, tatsu, DP and everything. sometimes when I try to poke with LP or LK a DP or tatsu will alwasy beat me dry and put me on my ass, and from there I have to perfectly predict what Akuma is going to do. if I try to wait patiently it seems nearly impossible because I can’t perfectly know everything Akuma is going to do and I get put on my ass. is seems that for Hugo there is really no answer but to either get lucky on akumas mistake or something. does anyone have any strategies on this match-up?<br><br><br><br>P.S<br>please don’t suggest on switching characters, i am a character loyalest for one. and secondly that tdoes not help me become a better player <br>
If you learn how to punish max then Gouki has to think twice about just doing random shit.
Sounds like you’re getting bullied. I would bet it has a lot more to do with fundamentals than matchup.
You must parry a lot in this matchup. Check out YSB videos for further help.

blocked tatsu can be reversal punished with 360. use lp to make sure you are in range. if you can’t punish tatsu in this way you have no hope in this matchup<br><br>mp is a great move to stuff or punish shoto c.mk on whiff. this can start to earn you dash ins<br><br>also learn timing for using your super to beat meaty air fb. you can do this with gigas (sa1) and hammer mountain (sa3)<br><br>imo experiment in training mode with ways to beat demon flip. unfortunately, this move is simply strong in this matchup but…<br><br>-jump back mp should beat demon flip throw<br>-stand lp beats deep demon flip kick or empty demon flip<br><br>I’m sure backbreaker or lariat might have some uses too against this move.<br><br>Most important is be patient and don’t jump to close distance unless you know the Akuma is going to do a move with long animation.<br>
I’ve always felt like Hugo/Akuma is kinda’ in Hugo’s favor. I mean shit, if Akuma makes one mistake he really bleeds. Until a specialist chimes in I can give some very general advice:<div><br></div><div>If he’s tapping buttons -going JROD- just block and punish. Worst thing in the world Akuma can do to you if you’re blocking correctly is Demon Flip into Grab and that’s a mosquito bite to Hugo and his freakishly high health. That and Kara-Demon and KKZ unblockable but that’s a given with every character. Look into red-parrying the Tatsu spam. Go with SA1. SA3 is okay but I don’t know, it’s just not nearly as good as SA1. Once Hugo has SA1 loaded you really have to be careful, and especially Akuma. </div>
You have to play patient in this matchup. The stamina difference here won’t even matter because he either has so many ways to keep you out, or so many moves that just beat yours. <div><br></div><div>Block all Tatsus, no matter what strength, because you get one free 360/720 punish. If they Shoryu, do 360/720, or do Ultra Throw/Clap/Backbreaker to rack up stun.</div><div><br></div><div>Block whatever you can’t see, parry whatever you can. If they’re getting predictable up close, take a chance and parry. There’s not much you can do, but don’t let them just walk all over you even if it is Hugo vs Akuma.</div><div><br></div><div>It would be helpful if you show us a video of you playing against an Akuma next time, so that we can tell where you really stand in this match. Like ryan said, the experience you’ve been putting down seems like you’re getting too overwhelmed and don’t have enough experience with the game in general. Maybe it’s because of how vague you put it? </div><div><br></div><div>Not trying to put you down, just saying there’s not really much to go off of for now.</div><div><br></div><div>But let me just say a lot of us feel your pain. This matchup sucks and a lot of people argue over whether Akuma’s worse than Dudley in this matchup and vice versa.</div>
How it should go, from the OP’s description;<div>1. Gouki’s doing a lot of moves, show him that you can punish them.</div><div>2. Gouki can’t do random specials anymore so he has to use his normals.</div><div>3. Learn to counter-poke well so Gouki is afraid to use his normals.</div><div>4. Now you can attack him.</div><div><br></div><div>This match-up is super hard for Hugo, though. I usually play SA1 Hugo but in this match I prefer SA3 because it’s so hard to get in and because you can’t gigas his towards + MP.</div>

Do you confirm into SA3 off the Claps a lot or do you confirm off of a jump in? Just curious.<div><br></div><div><br></div>
I would confirm it off claps but I can hardly ever get clap pressure started in this match. I usually just use low jab xx SA3 and parry into instant SA3. It’s a better punish off parry in this match because of Gouki’s overhead and if you can do parry instant SA3 to his low forward then you can get good damage without having to worry what he cancels into. My Hugo SA3 skills are pretty shit, though.
hmm maybe it could online too, because after tatsu no matter how meaty or range DP seems to beat my 360 every time unless I red marry the last hit or I parry the whole thing which i can only do about 40% of the time. and with demon flip it depends on what he does, there are times I parry a lot of what akuma but his priority in move always seem to beat mine. thank for the videos Ill review those more and ill continue to practice what you all say but for the most part all the advise you guys gave me I seem to already attempt to do and things still seem to be in akumas favor. don’t get me wrong Akuma does bleed hard when I hit him but Akuma has more oppertunity to put hugo on his ass with just about every special move he has. and huge is very weak on wakeup <br>
Akuma online isn’t that bad. His Tatsu’s get an online buff but once you get over that there’s not much changes between online/offline Akuma and he doesn’t enter Urien levels of online godliness.
Here’s one fun thing: predicting Demon Flips early with j.LP helps out.
<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>As an aside: Because of Hugo’s high health I feel like even if I get a good jump in combo going with Alex that it barely did any good. </span></font><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”><br></span></font></div><div><font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>I always think of that scene in Predator where Ahnold hits the Predator with a branch “Bad idea.” </span></font></div>
Like Pherai said, if you can’t punish tatsu with 360 then you have no hope. Go to training mode.
Learn the best ways to punish blocked shoryu. For example: fp shoryu should be max punished with palm palm hammer or palm palm ex Lariet.
You shouldn’t be having problems with tatsu and shoryu as Hugo. That’s not what makes this matchup gay.

I’d only recommend SA1 if you truly feel like you’ve mastered it. maybe not up until tachi gigas, but at least being able to partition 360’s for the 720, every punish in every matchup, etc.<br><br>I hate to make an argument from authority, but even YSB has a SICK gigas and he often still uses SA3 in this matchup, and very well. I think when it comes to utilizing the fear of a stocked super, SA3 is just as effective in this matchup as SA1 (maybe better because reversal wakeup SA3 will actually beat f+mp lol). it also does TONS of stun so of course very good vs Gouki<br><br>I don’t mean to argue that SA3 > SA1 necessarily, just that it isn’t so cut and dry, and also that I think SA3 is easier for a new player.<br>
ill work on it, I just noticed that what hurts Hugo a lot is knockdowns. hugo sucks on wake up and characters like Ryu and Akuma who’s moves consistently put Hugo on his ass those are the hard matchups. I would take fighting a urien over a Akuma any day. or even a army of kens. (even though I get tired of fighting them endlessly) <br>
I still think no one should play Gigas unless your name is hayao or kuroda. It’s too difficult to catch a good player with Gigas.
Hugo is pretty good on wakeup actually. 2 frame 360. Can’t always be churning butter on wakeup but its strong sometimes.
It is a gimmick but do you know about Hugos low invincibility on reset situations? Something to use to your advantage sometimes.
on wakeup many characters normal grab or lp or lk beats Hugos 360 on wake-up, I have tested this many times. best thing to do is either block or always parry 360. thats like 80% of Hugo wake up success is parry punish. Gigas is a very good even against good players. there are many setups for it. I use Gigas in 70% of my match ups. you can wiff moves into gigas and you can even bait the opponents parry into gigas. that’s a major strength of it <br>
this player wakes up with parry a lot. just some background info since there’s no video footage posted.
