Akuma FAQs: Quick questions & answers!

This may seem like a fairly novice question but what’s a good anti air to prevent crossups? Usuaully Cr.HP gets the job done for me but I’ve started to notice recently that when some players attempt some block string into crossup gimmicks on me they jump clear over my Cr.HP when they have very specific spacing. It doesn’t really crop up that often because nobody really tries it as it’s a bit gimmicky and easily blockable but I’m wondering if there is a way to punish it when it happens?

Well against most other projectile users at least, I still find it really useful against straight up melee characters, you can practically win matches with heavy fireball spam alone if you don’t have a precitable pattern and can bait jump in attempts. That’s what I love about the shotos.

There’s no Akuma General Discussion thread, so to avoid opening a new thread on this matter, I’ll ask here:

Who’s gonna buy the “Tokido Formula”?
And considering they’re still putting in the final touches on it, and haven’t released a price tag… how much would you pay for it?

Personally? As much as I love Tokido, I have a hard time buying certain things without being aware of the content. A book gets reviews. It can be an acclaimed book. This guide? A bit too obscure. Hopefully one of the Akuma technology gurus will buy it and review the content with a simple: “it’s worth it” or “meh”.

Then again, time=money. If it’s a well compiled guide, I’ll assume the cost will justify the time spared looking for info.

Speak your mind.

What I do now is I do the cr. HK, then I quickly input 2 LP. Because of the awkward positioning of the hand when trying to press HK + LP, I would sometimes get LP to come out instead of HK. This way I ensure that cr.HK comes out no matter what. I also find it gives me a small window where I can better see what my opponent does before finishing the demon inputs; by the time I input the 2 LP, I already know if my opponent blocked, focused or jumped over it so it’s easier to decide if I want to finish the demon or hold back.

Just found my way to FADC properly or kind of… and it’s by using a very strange pattern but today is the only day of my long 6 months life in this game when I could achieve a 22 hit combo in training mode with cs:hp: xx fireball xx FADC. yesterday I wasn’t even able to make a 4 hits combo.
the pattern use a sort of pLink :hp:~:mp:~:mk: mixed with a holding :mp: and releasing :hp: for the fireball during the stick QCF motion. Main draw back is cr:mp: coming out instead of :hp: but I guess I’ll do better with time. I need to find a way to spend all the time I have with this trick, I used to rush a lot to do all the inputs one by one, now I could probably make a coffee before I have to FADC.
Now where this game kills me is if I try to put it in after a jump in I fail 70% of the time. Still proud of the progress though !

This growing trend of monetising a lot of what has traditionally been handled and provided for free by community members does not sit right with me personally. It kinda flies in the face of what established and makes the FGC so great to be a part of. Its like going to the bar and asking for a glass of water for your sober driver and having the guy charge you a couple of bucks or whatever. Bad analogy? I dunno. Maybe I’m yet to properly adjust to the idea of people trying to make a buck or perhaps even a living off the community or a niche within it.

When you put a price tag on everything (especially stuff that other guys typically create for free as a means to contribute towards a community they love) it sours rather than sweetens in my view. This is just my opinion and how I feel however. A lot of people I expect to disagree and I can understand the host of counter-arguments about supporting those who DO take the time to create this content, host Tokido, translate, etc, etc. To which I ask them to remember the awesome material loltima and countless others have put out over the years which has not only been completely free, but also high quality and very well researched.

Personally, I respect the latter. Community created content provided for free for us all to enjoy and benefit from has genuine heart in it that isn’t tainted with the dollar. A better approach (again, in my opinion) would instead be a donation option for their work, though for all we know this production might have a completely reasonable price.

I’m very interested in what these guys have put together though I will only consider supporting their efforts provided we get a solid ‘demo’ of what to expect. And I don’t mean a lame introduction piece, I’m talking about a juicy chunk of advanced stuff to really show what we’d be getting for our money. There’s good and bad guides out there, but there is also that middle ground where guides people pay for contain nothing a quick forum or Google search can’t reveal and that’s not even mentioning the wealth of Youtube guides detailing setups, combos, strategies, etc.

In short, I guess we’ll have to wait and see and I hope we get a decent demo or trailer. I’d actually be keen to have a respected Akuma player ‘review’ it and share their thoughts in terms of what the target audience(s) perhaps is.

hmm i will pay abit. perhaps $10?

Up to you to pay for it, what’s the problem if people spent time to produce a service/book they wanna sell ? If more than 60% is genuine brand new info and even if it’s pure leech. People write books all over the world around fiction or even public personalities or events, who knows if they know a thing about what they talk about ?
Pretty sure 90% of the infos in this Formula is already somewhere in a video or webpage for free. But the time spent putting it all together is worth a buck no ?

Hi guys,

I’m an Ibuki player looking for an alt. / counterpick character. As my game is naturally based on offensive gameplay and pressure on wakeup, the only character in the game allowing me to have that much fun besides Ibuki is definitely Akuma (or maybe Cammy, but I have a better feeling with Akuma’s mobility after all).
So my question is: what should be my training process to become efficient with Akuma? I can pull off bnbs consistently (playing Ibuki made me good at linking difficult stuff :stuck_out_tongue: ), now I need some intel about what should I learn. I think I’m going to learn his setups right now, and then go train online to see what I can do.
I already have strong basics of the game, I’m actually looking for a counterpick character following my epic fail in this week-end’s world game cup, essentially due to bad matchups - and to me being such bad in my bad matchups - (worst matchup for Ibuki? Dictator. Had 4 Dictators in my pool.). How do you feel the matchup Akuma - Dictator is? I feel like Akuma has more weapons to outzone him anyway.

Thanks:! =)

Well, I kinda agree with Gamogo. Why is there such a need to comercialize something that should (IS) already available free online to the community. At the same time, I sorta understand that this wasn’t Tokido just deciding he wanted to make a quick buck and put his “strategies” up for sale. Likely, his sponsors put him up to it (through contractual obligations no doubt) and he has to follow through and put his stamp on it, as it were.

I guess there’s nothing wrong with that, and I admit I’d be interested in something like that if Tokido was offering detailed insight on all the different matchups for Akuma in SSF4 AE. If someone put that together with input directly from THE Murderface, that would be worth at least a few bucks investment.

The dictator matchup is likely not going to be easier for you with Akuma than it was with Ibuki. If anything, it may get more difficult since Akuma’s health is lower… That said, Akuma does have a few setups that can deal with Bison, but you have to know your O/S in this matchup pretty well. And you have to arm yourself with patience because unlike Ibuki, Akuma can’t afford to press buttons against Bison as his normals aren’t as good. IMO, the Bison matchup for Akuma is all about getting him on his back and then applying pressure on his wakeup. Yes, he has one million espcape options, but that’s why you gotta press him as his escape options are best when using EX meter. If you can keep him on the run and using his meter, he’ll eventually HAVE to stay put and take your pressure which hopefully, will cause him to make a mistake you can capitlize on.

I’m not a big fan of selling something that can be acquired free of charge. That said however this is a very common and accepted practice. You can still purchase dictionaries and encyclopedias even though they are available free online. Even more relevant is video game strategy guides, like the one for SF4 where the information of the frame data and how to execute moves is contained within. That information wasn’t a secret yet people still purchased it.

I hope Tokido’s project is very successful, but I won’t be buying it.

I have a feeling he is going to take about all the set ups we have already found. I might find a trick or two, but for the most part I think I would already know much of what he would talk about.

there’s the possibility that this project came up by the sponsor/producer itself and offered to Tokido as a side way to make a bit of money. Maybe he’ll just sign it and won’t even write a single sentence of this book…
Damn If I had an activity that bring that much audience on the web and IRL, of course I gona ask me if I can get a reward to make a living with it.

New question :
How I’m supposed to combo FADC to st.RH ??
I watched - 6 vids and his incredible ease with this combo but I just can’t reproduce a single fireball FADC RH in training room.
PC AE version isn’t out of date for this combo compared to 2012 I think, so what ?

EDIT : Ok just made it 2 times in 25min. So I take it “1 frame” link ?

It is fairly hard ever since the s.HK nerf coming out of vanilla. It is often set up specific or character specific.

so the vids may be old ones ? Mainly the ShinAkuma -6 Best of here :

Edit : NVM it’s called 2012 Best of so up to date. I’ll look around for more data about how it works frame wise to figure out the trick.

Ok I found something that might answer the question :

Spoiler

It’s quite possible, the problem is it requires more frame advantage than a point-blank Gohadouken FADC usually creates. When you perfectly FADC from a Gohadouken, the most frame advantage you can get is +7. This lets any normal move that starts up in seven frames or less connect as a combo. far.HK starts up in 8 frames, which won’t combo.

The trick to creating more frame advantage is to combo into Gohadouken in such a way that the fireball doesn’t connect immediately on startup. This is done by using cr.MK xx Gohadouken from further away. You’ll still FADC, but the fireball will be active for a few frames longer before it connects. Since the fireball always causes the same amount of hitstun, you’ll recover a few frames sooner than you normally would, relative to the opponent. This will create a tight window of opportunity to connect far.HK where you wouldn’t before.

So it’s about the same issue we have for the loop st:lp:, st.f:hk: gain a frame by hitting meaty and save some recovery time. A bit out of reach at my level I’m afraid. But I’ll try to find the distance.

st.:rh: combos : Moved to set ups thread

Hey. Really sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but google and the search function are failing me (maybe I’m not using the right terms) but here goes:

What is the frame window for juggling sweep or srk after LK tatsu? It would just be nice for me to know whether this is 1, 2 or 3.

Many thanks!

It depends on the character because it depends on how fast they fall, some fall fast like Sagat and others fall slow like Rog and Sim. If I’m not mistaken the slower they fall the easier it would be (larger opportunity) to sweep or SRK them.
