Air Dash Nerf. Lets talk about it

Out of the 378 comments, this is the smartest one.

I actually just put in some time to test this and I’m not sure it’s 100% accurate. Here’s what I did:

  • put my point character in flight mode
  • had the opposing CPU dummy (Storm) use Hail Storm, which is active 1 frame after the super freeze close-up
  • input unfly command for point character during super freeze and held back to block

Magneto and Thor were the only characters who got hit by Hail Storm in this fashion. Morrigan and everyone else with flight modes (including Devil Trigger Dante and Dark Phoenix) could block in time. Don’t know if this is different if you’re dashing or performing some other action at the time instead of just in neutral flight, though.

Furthermore, at the risk of exposing myself, it would seem that Storm herself can block during flight mode. I did not know this. (I knew it applied to MODOK though…)

I personally feel like people should just invest more time into point Morrigan and just have something for the supposed matchups where she can’t move forward without losing. With the nerfs to the original “do one thing turn on XF and win” top tiers that should give more room to experiment with characters like Morrigan. I was using Morrigan for a bit on the side when the game came out but she just isn’t scary enough on point for my tastes without having a lot of meter. There’s nothing about her point game that I generally find that interesting especially not putting her at the start of a round.

I’m sure the air dash issue is probably a bigger deal than any of that but…I feel like there’s a lot of characters in this game that have power that we just need to explore especially since everyone comes with some shit that’s really fucking good.

I want to trust Capcom in that they had a specific reason for how Morrigan will survive the air dash nerf…but I guess that’s up to the players to decide if it’s worth working for or if any work won’t be worth it.

I’ve been using Morrigan since day one. She is just not that scary on point. In fact, you can look at all of the characters who are good on point and realize they all have some a combination of some common features which make them scary:

  • High/low or left/right mixup capability with teleports
  • High mobility with air dashes, dash cancels, etc.
  • Easily spammed moves (ie: j.S) that earn a ground bounce (Sentinel, Hulk, Tron, Wolverine, Dante)
  • The ability to convert any hit into big damage, especially while playing defensive (Wolverine, Taskmaster, Dante, She-Hulk)
  • The ability to own lots of space at any given time
  • The ability to get big damage off throws
  • The ability to self-OTG into a large combo with or without an assist

Morrigan doesn’t have any of those, that’s why she isn’t threatening on point.

I tired playing her without ground dashing at all in a long session tonight, and it was amazingly painful. The only time I felt like I could really get anywhere was in XF3, she has a nice walk speed with that 45% speed boost. It was also damn hard to break the habit of using dashes to cover ground at all. Maybe she’ll get something ridiculously awesome to make things worth that much effort, but meh. Odds are, I’m dropping her.

Do you SERIOUSLY believe they even thought about Morrigan when implementing this?
I highly doubt even half of the development team even remembers she’s in the game.

Trust me, I’m not complaining, nor comparing his changes with Morrigan’s. But, it’s still going to take some getting used to.

Kinda don’t know where the Morrigan comment came from, though, as I never even mentioned her.

Whatev’s. Hulk strongest.

I said I wanted to…that doesn’t mean I’m going to. LOL.

Yeah that’s also part of what leads me to believe that Capcom intentionally made her so she has to be in XF to be successful and mostly otherwise has to revolve around her meter assist.

It’ll be one of those things where Morrigan mains will drop her but people who didn’t even consider her before will most likely pick her up because I see way too much potential in her instant recovery meter build assist. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if her meter assist makes up some of the top tier teams and people start learning to play her as an anchor if needed just for the power of the assist.

Those that want to make a team that revolves around maximizing her point play will be left out…but if her point play is sub par even through maximization then it leaves me to believe Capcom didn’t want to make her too strong. In the same way I believe they capped Haggar and Hsien Ko’s point play for specific…assist oriented reasons.

I’ve spent most of my recent matches against folks in Glaive and Bead(especially this one) stance in order to prepare for Ultimate with the airdash nerf. I don’t even know where to start with Morrigan though. Her flight cancel is a decent option, but that one frame can get her caught in nasty situations and it also stops her momentum completely.

Too much hassle imo

LOL they couldn’t even remember which of her costumes was new or old when they presented her colors a few weeks ago. They probably don’t give a rat’s ass about her if their treatment the Darktalkers in this game is any indication.

Must’ve misread somewhere. Still, Dormammu is actually coming out much stronger than before when it is all said and done.

I play Morrigan on point, and now I actually feel that she’ll be okay. I use her solely as a meter builder; instead of going for high damage in combos I just try to squeeze in as many hits as I possibly can. I feel Morrigans strategy is a good offense is the best defense. Right from the get go I try to confuse and overwhelm my opponents with her variety of air-dashes. Just play the way Marlin Pie does, and just forget about defense. Fuck blocking. Bring on the changes, I’ll be okay.

I’ll make that easier for myself and just make a good Morrigan assist team. LOL. She’ll still be completely better than the 3 or 4 people that will most likely still be in the C tier and in a game as high damage as MVC3…that will keep her viable even as a point character if someone wants to put work into it. Either way she’ll still be completely better feeding free meter to spacing or meter powered characters.

Hmmm. Its a big conundrum
