Ain’t that the truth.
this hasn’t been said yet, but damdai kept a good attitude the whole time. he had genuine smiles after the whole ordeal and still invited us for casuals. that guy has class that would be kind of shitty to not acknowledge.
That’s sad, option selects are part of Hawk game, without that, hawk has little chance to take wins, wow, then Mayakon, Nira, Neoray, Toutanki, damdai himself, sako and DSP are doing it wrong! lol, guys please pay attention to this, never use O.S “bullshit” again for god sake.
lol… seriously LOL.
So you think ST has to be a game for only OG players aka old people?, Let me understand this, you prefer that ST dies because old people will eventually die by age than accept new good blood?, woow, then marsgatti, papercut, el trouble, ultracombo, should quit playing ST because they are kids compared to OGs and they will be never good enough to compete vs OGs, woow then the OGs has always been old since 1994, and they never were kids and they never were beginners.
You should feel grateful because of this MM, this MM created Hype and interest for ST alongside ToL, we need support, more competition, ST had over 10k people watching quals and the MM challenge and over 30K people watching finals.
It’s easy to criticize and pose that smart ass attitude, please gimme a break.
what have you done for ST scene?
100% with bernie here. those who didn’t put their money where their mouth is should just shut up with these cheap shots.
so it is settled that at evo 2012 afro is the better player (very solid deejay performance). but damdai is still #2 (from his tourney result) and can easily school any of you talking smack here.
also mike watson with due respect you might have confused the stream monster troll “damdai” with the real one. i dont think damdai is a one trick pony nor i think he talks crazy smack (afro might have talked more on chat).
no need to be rude to each other.
i am sure a lot of people like myself are hoping for a run it back between damdai & afro later though.
I agree. The guy is super nice, very helpful whenever I ask him about any ST questions that I have, and is an all-around good guy. Not a bad bone in him. Generally speaking, I’ve yet to meet an ST player who is just a complete asshole.
People that aren’t used to Hawk’s OS’s would view it as bullshit. Speaking as devil’s advocate, it’s a brainless and near-inescapable setup that gives Hawk a ridiculous amount of comeback potential. He doesn’t fight as clean as say a Ryu or Guile, and thus initially it seems over-powered, even in spite of his weak matchups.
But it does force players to find ways to mount this seemingly unstoppable obstacle, and it is a rather large hurdle to have to overcome. It just requires the opponent to put in more work in order to perfect his execution, strategy, and technique. Hawk is annoying in that, if you make a single mistake that leads to hard knockdown or a missed AA opportunity, you’re dead.
And people don’t seem to think about the future. Japan has had a very healthy ST community for near the past 20 years due to the fact that they have a healthy cycle of both new and old players. A community is not, and should not, depend on a few select veterans who are near perfect masters of their game, but have limited access to competition. Veterans get old, real responsibilities get in the way, modern games bring in more competition and pot prize, and thus they’ll eventually drop the game. Guys like Choi and Valle were dominant in ST in their own time, but they haven’t kept up with the game, and have moved on to other things.
We have to begin to think about ways to increase our players pool by bringing in beginner and intermediate players. We have to be willing to teach them, foster their growth, and thus help to naturally fuel their desire to become the next generation of ST’s top level players.
There should be little doubt in anybody’s mind that Afro and Damdai aren’t the top 2 players in the US at the time. Both are top-level and decorated players in the ST community, and this money match hasn’t changed that at all. What I’m hoping this will do is fuel their friendly rivalry in order to become even better players. Although no bad blood exists between the two (despite what you may read on forums and GGPO chat), rivalries only help to motivate players to level up their game in order to conquer their competitive goals. This year we had two master-level Japanese ST players in grand finals. We should be focusing on getting our American players up on their level.
And Watson is aware of the difference between troll Damdai on stream chat, and real Damdai.
+1
I got a chance to chat with Mao. He’s been playing ST for five years. That’s more new school than almost everyone here.
Gotta train and motivate the new blood. There’s a TON of super talented SF4, UMVC3, VF, KOF, etc players. These talented guys would make great ST players too.
Although I would’ve guessed that MAO has been playing longer than that, on the whole I’m not surprised. A lot of players have reached a very high level in just a few years. Taira comes to mind, when he burst on to the scene and pretty much surpassed YuuVega’s Dictator in the span of a year. When I was in Japan Sasori told me he’s only been playing since around the time when ST came on GGPO (early 2008). Damdai is another example of new school, coming into the scene in 2007 I believe.
With enough dedication to practice and learn, new players can definitely rise to the top in this game.
2/3rds of the sbo team from last year made top 8 at the ToL. Only Brent Immortal didn’t make top 8 but he still knocked Sako into losers so thats respectable. And another new blood player that placed well at that SBO qual also made top 8. So good shit to the new blood. And good games between afro and damdai. Too bad we never really saw Afros boxer vs Damdais o.hawk. but respect to all the players.
And Afro still as arrogant as usual, bragging how he could win 10-0 but he wasnt in “top shape”:

IT was a joke bro. Chill the fuck out.
Such wit.
i think damdai should have used N.Ryu as opposed to O.Ryu and O.Ken. The old characters help in some of their bad match ups, but i think in this particular matchup, having super would have made a big difference. once cornered, afro was able to spam deejays crouching elbow to keep him out and it seemed like there was nothing he could do about it. had damdai had a ryu super, i think it would have helped in this situation.
Hats off to both players for the MM and their ToL placings. And also to the ST scene for kicking tons of ass at Evo… very inspiring stuff. I know some of the 3S guys took note and want to step their game up next year because y’all were out in full force… Like James Chen said on his show, that’s how it’s fucking done.
I’m not sure who I talked to concerning this topic, but 3s guys definitely took note of the ToL. According to our conversations, there’s really no 3s leadership figure or group that’s willing to step up and start holding tournaments to encourage both interested players and veterans alike to get the scene revved up again. The top players don’t really seem interested to play with newbie players and teach them how to play the game.
It seems to it things would be harder for 3S. First of all, the game does not have all the characters people love, unlike ST. Second, it behaves worse online. It is not on GGPO anymore - and it wasn’t actually great, BTW - and it works worse than CPS-1/2 games in Supercade. Some say the game is slow. It is not. It has sort of slow things, and things which are quite fast - and to which you have to react, nonetheless. And you need to react to some stuff like you do in CE, which is also very hard to play online, once you are used to offline. Go sweep Guile’s cr.Fwd or Tatsu through projectiles, for instance. Shit is just unplayable online.
I doubt there are many CPS-3 boards around. If they are picky about the version, then it is hopeless.
Its considerably more difficult due to ongoing, porting still being considered, even if SF3 never will get to SF2 # of ports and differences.
Hats off to you guys for an amazing setup that SF3 players could learn from, to put together their own. If not outsource it to you guys if you’re willing to get SF3 on such a setup. There are a ton of the arcade problems in battery “Suicide Cart,” native 384 x 200 ~ish, upscaled or if that’s not the word, doubled, to fit showcase cabs/Astro/Blast City, including the scanlines.
SoCal and NY seem to be slowly doing their thing and with different plans and goals, so don’t be oblivious to it and spread more depressing news based on no word at all. Texas UFO getting the qualifier tournament also… if Capcom hurries up with the news on that. Please inform me if there have been anything out of them for the 25th Anniversary, includes yeah their online ports, HD Remix and SF3:OE
& there are new developments, that GGPO ST can benefit from too. Please do take a look in other forums, and not be a cave of just yours, wait for messengers like me to give you info -after I always read all your info from afar.
Actually I met someone at EVO who lives in Vegas and has a 3s CPS-3 candy cab setup. He even spoke of his desire to get a supergun to make things much more portable. The shit that was put together surrounding the ToL was very impressive/inspiring.
I didn’t want to chop it up into 2 parts, but I know everyone wants to see it sans stream lag.
