I think you can still use forward jump IAT, but the timing is very tight compared to SSF4/AE. But yeah, neutral jump and there are no problems aside from potentially an extra input.
Practiced nj Tsurugi’s in 2012, and they work like a charm!
But now, I really need to ask you guys how you deal with Honda spamming Splashes and Ochio, and Dhalsim poking me out to death. Outside of s.MP, I’m clueless what to do with those limbs. I Was ridiculously salty against Dhalsim last night. I use U1 because he doesn’t really toss too many fireballs my way.
I’ve read the tips here, but for the most part, he always gets me with a throw to reset things when I’m in close. It’s frustrating.
Not just s.MP, also use c.LK buffered EX Hayate. Between those two I think Makoto has an answer to every full and mid-screen poke Dhalsim has.
Throws are actually really good against Makoto. You have to use Tsurugi or frame trap with c.LK xx EX Hayate to reliably deal with them. Dhalsim has a big problem with Blockakusa and Tsurugis unless he has U2, so spam them when up close, specifically IA Tsurugis, until he starts giving pre-emptive flame blasts and s.HK, at which time revert to frame trapping.
When up close, Dhalsims (in my experience) generally do throw a lot, and if you’re pressuring them and get knocked back, they’ll spam the 3 frame s.LK until you’re out, or slide -> throw. There’s not much to be done as Makoto against the s.LK spam except FA dash, as it’s a tight trap which can also cancel into flame, but you can and should Tsurugi after blocking a slide against 99% of Dhalsims.
What are you looking for when you press buttons against Sim? My reflexes are slow, so I tend to be unable to counterpoke on opponent whiff. Do you just spam when in range?
Traditionally, I always have fits dealing with charge characters with projectiles, so Sim (and Sag) is possibly the only non-charge, non matchup-related nightmare I have, since I suck vs him whether I use Makoto or 2011 Yun (!).
Buffer poking is about mind games and timing, not reaction. Use f+MP to inch forward, c.LP/c.LK buffer poke with meter, s.MP naked or s.MP buffer poke with meter. You’ll get tagged a few times, for sure, but tagging him once with meter = massive advantage.
Dhalsim isn’t a charge character
Yup, he isn’t a charge character, hence the edit. I worded my last post poorly. Was using U1 the right choice? When I get my groove going against Sim, he almost always gets opened up for a Karakusa anyways.
Thanks for the tips! Now, just need to study the Guile matchup better… And to lrn2blk Viper. LOL.
I honestly think my biggest hindrance is that I lack matchup experience. Online play is hard for me, given my connection. I end up going to the arcade to get experience. After fighting 200 shotos in the arcades, seeing a Sim or a Honda just throws me off completely.
Is there any disadvantage to mashing backdash against Honda during hands in case he goes for fadc and stopping if u see he doesn’t?
no.
Just watch, and if he does FADC, use tsurugi
One thing I know for sure is that dhalsim is a frustration character. He has low damage so its almost like he relys on you constantly trying to run through his limbs like its an obstacle course, and instead you end up breaking against the rocks like waves on a shore, which of course only doubles you trying to get in.
To keep the irrational thinking and salt at bay, once he hits you at mid range, just stop and block. He gonna do a extended limb block string and you can use that time to calm down. Move in slowly and methodically. Stop just trying to jump and dash in (thats my problem) slow it down and once you get in, using robots advice then he free as can be. BUT you have to avoid all that unnecessary damage you take trying to rush him. Once I/we are on mossads level and we have all the limb counters down to a science (which of course you will never learn until you drop out of warp speed revenge mode) then we can rush with impunity
Advice from a beginner : )
On my level? lol i’m ok. I lose to some stupid shit all the time. I wanna be like vryu for my birthday (jan 22 come on someone make it happen)
stupid question: why when I focus on blanka when he do his upper roll (rainbow?) sometimes it break armor sometimes not?
is it only when it’s reversal?
Who are makoto’s toughest matchups? i think almost every fireball character lol. and i am also curious about the makoto ryu matchup.
All physical specials break armor on reversal, IE Blanka’s Rainbow Ball and Fei’s Rekkas.
Cammy, Rufus, Yun, T. Hawk, Sagat, and Fei Long are who I consider her worst match-ups in 2012.
For me the hardest would have to go to Sagat and M.Bison. Haven’t played any T.Hawk so can’t say on that one.
Still very useful advice, though. I consider myself an above average player, but my scrubby habits still surface (read: I get antsy against turtles) from time to time, and Dhalsim/Guile expose my bad habits for free.
In other news, I need a ton more practice with that neutral IAT. I was doing it fine two days ago against the dummy, and then I decided to use Fei long instead of Dee Jay as my dummy… Aaaauuugggghhh!!! I was in whiffapalooza hell.
I concur with what you said. However, I find my impatience against Dhalsim goes against me in that match-up. I just want to get in and rip his arms off.
Long time lurker, first time poster for SRK.
Ive been attempting to play Makoto for a while now (Greatly dislike the other characters in this game…they all look boring) and Ive come upon a bit of a wall. Ive read all over the Makoto threads and under the tips/tricks etc pages, so I know about all the awesome stuff this girl can do but none of it goes into pratice right. Is there anything basic I missed that I should be focusing on before I move on to more complicated things? EX.-post-hayate mix-ups, kara-karakusa setups, those great OS Vryu posted awhile ago (including that vid from 2 weeks ago.)
P.S-Ima scrub
Safe jumps lol. I can’t stress how well they’ve been working for me lately. Of course you need to learn how to follow them up to get your win. I would put anti airs next along with meaties. This is all assuming you at least know the basics and are just underselling yourself. Blockakusa is great to learn as well. From what I’m getting as well is you like to be very offensive and in your face with her. Cool your jets if you are man she’s a cobra staying still is your most vital asset.
Safe jumps and practicing anti-airing with Fukiage. A Makoto who can AA with Fukiage against opponents of the same skill has a much stronger footsie game.
She the snake that’ll poison her opponents mind. Strikes out and leaves the question of “when will she do it again?” that poisons the mind.
