AEMAKOTO Guide and Q&A: Ask all your questions here!

Just reached 5000 career matches and I’m feeling pretty good. I know I’m getting better because Ive been getting some double digit streaks going (previously I could only maintain 4-5 before I lost and started over) and though i just got back from five day vacation with no playing, I beat a 3000 pp players secondary ken and his main (i think), a 9000 bp guy. And that was without tricks. It’s like i just knew what to do. At about 7000 matches I should be good enough to give substantial advice…maybe

Fails on Dudley too. Not sure who else. Fucking hitboxes.

On these characters I just do FFLS>Hayate. Works just as well, with a “technically” easier link and works all the time.

Remember that Karakusa has more pushback than just dashing up and hitting, so AFAIK you’re looking at 2 hits max before you need to cancel into Hayate on most characters. The combo you’re trying wont’ work after karakusa on most characters.

So, anyone who scrolls up or initially answered some of my questions should remember my struggles with picking up this game/character. Well, I’ve been fooling around with her since I’ve posted the game and I’ve been having quite a bit of fun, and I look forward to improving more in the future. For now, I’m just working on converting to my TE stick from my beloved pad which I’ve gotten used to over the years. It’s a challenge, but I think I’ll survive.

It’s always tough going from a pad/controller to TE stick. Just stick with it and go cold turkey, trust me; none of that switching back and forth. Good luck with it!

Ya i was starting to figure that was the case later on in the night. Must have been fatigue that had me figuring it worked earlier :s Its always good to know for sure tho thanks Mossad man :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol if you do ex oroshi late enough you can beat out dictators u1. Just throwing that out there. Might be some kind of ultra bait setup floating around.

that works with any oroshi.

You know if an opponent is telegraphing a jump, sometimes i’ll use Oroshi as Anti air. It works surprisingly well lol. really works on anything that’s not invincible. Good Knockdown.

Oh yeah, EX Hayate, Dash, HP Oroshi beats almost ANY reversal. Well 99% of reversals that i’ve tried to hit it with… it really is a good tool

I love oroshi

I’m just surprised that the ultras active frames… Never mind lol invincibility lasts more than long enough to make the first kick miss :stuck_out_tongue:

So the whole ffs not working on certain crouching characters has been bugging me. I went into training room before work and it seems to not work on anyone (I’m usually 90% on landing it but was rushing). Not even geif. That’s not a big deal considering how often you’ll get a raw hp on a crouching opp. Ch ffss seems like it would work on most of the cast on the other hand.

Hi guys, new player considering learning Makoto here. My experience with the game so far has been with ibuki, my pp is around 400 and my bp is at about 1k. I’ve played with dhalsim (around 400bp) and balrog, didnt really like either. I liked dhalsim but found his playstyle not to suit me. I realise he is some what simillar to makoto in that they play a poking game and lack a strong defensive and reversal game, however what let me down with dhalsim was his ability to unleash insane amounts of damage. He always seemed to just chip away at life until he won.

Anyway, the reason I am looking to swap away from ibuki is she is very execution intensive but it is high reward if you can pull it off. I have been told from a few people that makoto doesnt have many combo’s to learn and they aren’t tooooo difficult to do consistantly (that was my main issue with ibuki). I am by no means saying makoto is easy to play, don’t want to offend anyone - just slightly more noob friendly? Basically i am looking for a character (other than ken/ryu/random shoto) that is forgiving on noobs (shouldn’t be too hard to get wins with at my pp range) but has the potential to be played at high levels. Thats how i ended up here. If i’m wrong, send me on my way now and point me in the direction of another characters discussion forum :stuck_out_tongue:

If you’ve made it this far, what i am asking (and yes i’ve used the search feature, and read alot of the stickies - all very good! Coming from ibuki forums with the player guide, i was quite pleased to see the bible you have - yay!)… what i am asking is where is a good place to start. I plan to read all the stickies in full as i progress, what i am looking for is a few things that every new makoto player should learn before testing her out online. Just something to get me going so that i can win a few games online and then analyse my losses later and see what i need to work on and then refer to the stickies from then on.

I’m sure this has been asked hundreds of times, maybe someone should just have it copied and pasted for next time this comes up. Greatly appreciate you taking your time to help a new player out - this games fighting community has been amazing to me so far!

Don’t be fooled by what looks simple with Makoto. Other than viper, IMO she is the most execution heavy character in the game. You’re in the right place. Get ready to study a lot. At a little and develop your questions from there. It’ll be much easier if we know what present strengths and weaknesses you possess.

One more thing, makoto has an atrocious reversal game, FYI… I’m sure we will hear from you a lot more soon lol.

Oh, she’s NOOB friendly, is she?! Forgiving on NOOBS as well, eh? Makoto is the antithesis of being NOOB friendly, and I think you know that very well. I don’t know what sort of experience you’ve had with the FGC thus far, but from where I’m standing you can take a long walk off of a rotten plank, overlooking a very deep ocean, infested with ravenous sharks.

Edit: Pfft… NOOB friendly.

Well everyone except you…

I said i was simply repeating what I had been told elsewhere…

I believe i was very polite and forth-coming with what i knew and what i was asking… Right now I’m sorry for even asking, i didn’t realise i would get this sort of response! I guess i’ll just have to do my own thing and rely on people that i know who play her in game for help? =/

Ha, pretty sure Zwei was being sarcastic.

As for Mak being noob friendly, I guess you could say from a very basic combo standpoint, she is. It’s easy to see that one of her basic BnBs is choke -> s. HP -> HP hayate, which doesn’t look like a lot on paper. That being said, you’re not going to get anywhere doing normal->hayate over and over, although it might win you a few matches. She definitely relies on reading your opponent, probably moreso than the rest of the cast.

I say try her out, if you like how she plays, just stick with her. Whether she’s “noob friendly” or not doesn’t matter much does it?

Sorry for jumping the gun on that one, i’m not familliar with the people on this board, and as i’m sure we have all experienced for ourselves - sarcasm and other simillar things can be mistaken when conveyed through text. I understand there is alot to her, as I am sure there is with every character. I guess i’m not looking to “flowchart” makoto so to speak, but that one BnB you mentioned is a start. I think with any character you need to be able to read your opponent, and that’s a large part of the game.

I guess i’m looking for like 1 BnB, 1 go to punish should they whiff an SRK or something, 1 mix-up and a good poke/OS and what’s a good thing to do after a FA crumple. You know, just something basic so that while i’m playing and getting a feel for her, i have a general idea of what i can do and not go — hmm they whiff’d, what should i do? lets try this FAIL :frowning:

Atm i’ll practice this IATsurugi (spelling? still learning), a couple different moves i can OS with hayate i read earlier (such as st.mp with mp hayate buffered), that combo you mentioned after the choke and maybe some form of meaty or wake-up pressure i can use.

Basically a few tools i can practice and get myself through a few matches without ending up mashing as i have no clue what to do. Like i said, once i’ve played a few games that i feel weren’t just me mashing and randoming from being clueless, then i’ll be able to evaluate my weaknesses and refer to the abundance of information on this board. Thanks

Hey, Scrag is off to a good start. He’s using the questions thread and didn’t make a new thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

Simplistic
Punish for whiff SRK is S.HP/S.MP > HP/EX Hayate or EX Oroshi.
BnB would be C.LP > S.LP > S.MP/C.LK > MP/EX Hayate or EX Oroshi and Karakusa > S.HP > HP/EX Hayate or EX Oroshi and S.MP > S.MP > MP/EX Hayate or EX Oroshi.
Mix ups won’t really help at low level play, they’re something you’ll learn as you learn more with Makoto.
After FA crumble? Keeping it simple, HP > Hayate. Once you learn your IATsurugi (you spelled it right) you can add that before the HP. Alternatively you can wait a bit after the FA crumble and do a Fukiage > Tsurugi > EX Hayate.

Be warned while playing Makoto. You may not like what you feel. The pain all Makoto players have endured. :o

Yeah, on the rage thread!

Never go in mashing or randomly with makoto  one of the things you’ll have to work on is learning to make every move with makoto deliberate.

I have an xbox on AE 2011, and a ps3 on AE 2012. I saw this earlier, but I am really bugged about the dashup IA Tsurugi crossing up an opponent after an FA crumple, especially in the corner. Will take this to the lab some more and see if I can do neutral IAT’s, but what are you guys doing at the moment to fix this?

I believe people are just doing those neutral jump Tsurugis you mentions… :stuck_out_tongue:
