Advanced Balrog (Boxer) Mind Games + Tricks

questions:

  1. any meaty tap after juggle ultra 1 or ultra 2?
  2. is meaty tap safe against reversal, ultras?

There’s absolutely no setups after U2, the recovery is incredibly fast. I’m sure there’s one after U1, but that’s too much time for the opp to think about what they can mash to beat that slow ass train (unless you’re playing against Fuerte). Meaty TAP is safe on block, any fully invincible reversal will beat it though. Meaty TAP is best after a dizzy, that’s a setup we need to find. Meaty TAP after a dizzy is the equivalent of a focus attack with no crumple, one hit, massive damage, even better if you could be charging the TAP while doing the combo to get a meaty lvl 2 (or if the buff is true a meaty level 3).

oh okay, we tend to use the ultra 1 knockdown to build some meter and put ourselves safe, what are those specials? O: dash punch, tap, dash punch?

that will be ehm 20+30+20 meter built, I usually go for TAP HB which is 30+30 and if I am close I do the rope a dope to make chargers to lose back charge

Despite the long break, I’ve still resorted to old tricks and habits.

Fishing for DSP by TAP’ping to close distance on UTK into meaty CMP > Overhead. If they attempt to wakeup with anything not invincible it’ll likely be stuffed by the CMP - and even if they simply blocked it, the brain often puts the player into downback while you’re halfway through your overhead animation. Still predictable if repeated and not a safe option but it can clutch out desperate combos on people with no reactions or who you’ve trained to block low for large amounts of time.

Despite the ancient headbutt nerf from vanilla, I still occasionally headbutt over people during UTK and then ex-headbutt on their wakeup. It’s not something you’d ever expect (what type of Rog headbutts into headbutt, anyway?), though it’ll only actually do anything against people mashing or trying desperate wakeup DP’s during pressure. If they simply block, be prepared to look really stupid while you eat a whopping punish for this nonsense - but it’ll catch people on tilt all day.

In addition, if you land an overhead combo on someone, it can sometimes be worth doing it again (meaty) a second time during their wakeup from that combo. I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve OH > HB combo’d into a wakeup Overhead just because nobody thinks you’re ballsy enough to actually do it twice.

Focus attacks from TAP distance closers can catch out a surprising amount of people seeing as everyone and their mother tries to punish all of Balrog’s dash moves with normals. It’s worth trying if you have meter to burn and need to pull a random potential opportunity out of your ass. Worst case scenario, you get stuffed by jabs (too slow) or they block and you just dash whichever way you feel inclined.

Lately I’ve been neglecting anti-airs on opponents jumps because I like fishing for focus crumples. If you land one, you can TAP Ultra (seeing as you’re highly likely to backdash when attempting this, rather than risk forward dash). It’s one of if not the most simple Ultra setups yet I just love how it looks - and when you land one, people who jump in without focus breaking / double-hitting attacks typically feel that they must automatically block after their jump-in rather than try anything, unless they learn/have tools to stop this nonsense.

Torpedo into meaty Torpedo. Lost track of the amount of people trying to reversal, focus, or spam their way out of this on their wakeup as it looks so punishable if they quick rise. Grapplers who think churning 360’s will grab you out of it, or grab you if they block it, are in for a free roundhouse to the face.

If you notice people like to open a round with an immediate fireball or jump-back - Forward dash into TAP on round-start. If you have SUPER and the opponent jumped back // gets AA’d, Super them for easy damage and immediately put them in the corner.

Of course, there’s the ancient Focus Attack (Corner) into delayed CMK dash-under - but this is too well known to work against most people.

TL:DR - I’ve got nothing new.
