Just got back from AI (Arcade Infinity) and I had a 145 win streak with Balrog. Lots of mind games and tricks were used today. I think I used every single one of the tricks I’ve posted. They all worked. Something I just did today was I use focus attack as an anti air and it sent the opponent spiraling away and then I turn punched them before they landed :] I didn’t have ultra so I don’t know if you can juggle after that but I’m sure you can! Balrog army is still alive!
whoa gotta have fast fingers to do a focus attack while charging for TAP,hehe! Anyways, congrats on the streak!
How can you FA then TAP? Do you have enough time after the FA to start charging TAP? Or do you do some weird magic trick and pull out extra buttons and extra fingers? :cybot:
Hold the focus attack and then immediately hold jab and fierce punch. release just the medium kick button and the focus attack will come out while you are charging the turn punch. Then you just dash forward then release and bam. You can connect ultra and super off of it. I tried it in training mode and it does work. Something similar is say for instance you stun your opponent you can walk up and do the focus attack til level 3 and then it will crumple them and at this point you still will be holding for a turn punch. You dash forward then immediately hold down back. Then release the turn punch and it should punch them and now bring them air borne instead of them being on the ground. From here you can follow up with ultra and super.
This looks a lot easier, I’ll give it a try.
Don’t think I’m ready for your other trick yet, hehe
its just too much of a gamble for me. IMO rog should never put himself in the corner…ever.
When I started playing rog i always did meter building with 2 or 3 specials. usually when you do that you end up in front of your opponent and they can wake up dp for free if they have 2 ex bars . Now I just use it to close the gap. Its all matchup dependent i guess but I prefer to stay just outside their attack range
well if you get 145 wins the comp must have been a bit weak dont you think ?maybe thats why they worked. Evenso thats a crazy streak
lo1! Nice.
Never thought of that doing that before… innovative.
Competition was actually pretty solid. Akumas, Rufus, Ryu and Bison made up most of my wins. But there weren’t any gods playing until later. Mike Ross did finally take me off the streak. And then he started his own. True Balrog does not want to be in the corner at all. At the same time, if you havent seen these set ups before, you will fall for them. For example throw your opponent then whiff overhead dash punch right before they get up and then go into ex headbutt as they get up. Little stuff like that you pull out your ass in battle and it works. As far as when I knock an opponent down, I walk in and out of their attack range. I walk up to them and take a step back so if they wake up shoryu it will whiff and etc.
Thanks for the info Keno. I shall put it to good use I wish i still lived in LA just to experience the Arcade scene. But i moved back home to Italy
Question:
I’ve been using ambiguous cross-ups after landing a head butt, and they seem to be working quite well for me in certain match-ups when mixed in with safe jumps… That is until my opponent decides to stop quick standing to avoid the mix-up all together.
Do you guys have any good setups that can be used against someone who doesn’t quick stand after headbutt?
Congrats! The Keno Eye is too strong!
Just to mention for everybody else, you have to hit them out of the air with a full lvl 3 focus (this is what gives the “spinning” state when you connect vs an airborne opponent)
Anyways can you clarify on the dummy conditions you used in training mode? I tried in training mode:
- Ryu
- Dummy Set to jump straight up and down
- Midscreen
… and could not get the TAP to connect after the lvl 3 FA --> Dash In.
I even tried
lvl 3 FA (hit out of air, causing them to spin)
Dash In (and charge down back immediately)
Keep Charging db
ULTRA!
… but this didn’t work either … they fall too low to the ground before the ultra can hit
I did this in the morning and I only really had 10 mins to play around with it before having to take off for work! I was fiending for that Balrog Science !!! lol
Some comments / questions if you don’t mind:
Which character dummy did you use?
Did you set them to jump up?
Or just record mode and have them jump in?
Corner or Midscreen?
Thanks!!!
lols.
from my experience, when seeing this trick for the first time people will always try and do a throw after you whiff the overhead. and since EX headbutt has like 15 frames of startup full body invincibility, the grab will whiff and you hit them.
i noticed at evo alot of you cali rog players were doing this trick. heh. coincidentally, whenever i played vs a cali player, this trick never worked
anyways what i would like to recommend for you to try Keno is something i’ve been using lately which is instead of whiff overhead, use a whiff TAP.
The reason is because you can keep your back charge will still moving forward with a whiffing special move. Now with a down/back charge stored this will give you TWO options to follow up with afterwards: EX headbutt AND EX overhead.
This is nice because you probably notice now after you whiff the overhead punch, they will be crouch blocking and not pressing any buttons because they are scared of eating an EX headbutt. So this is where you can EX overhead (and into a big combo) for free!!!
so in summary:
after a whiff TAP,
EX Headbutt:
- beats throw attempts and (some) pokes (for example, if ryu does a cr MK, his hitbox changes and the EX headbutt will whiff and pass right thru)
- trades or passes thru wake up dp style moves
EX Overhead:
- loses to throws but
- beats crouch blockers and pokes (if they are not cancelled into specials or mashed into chains) but
- loses to wakeup specials (due to their armor breaking properties)
but like you said, sometimes you just gotta roll the dice!!

I am in the labs right now too and working on some new top secret stuff!
Wow! That is a really flashy looking trick. Thanks Keno for all your tips/tricks. Not too many pro Rogs sharing the knowledge, we appreciate it.
The focus to TAP is actually pretty easy. You can just hold all 3 P + med kick at the same time and the focus will begin while charging for TAP. Then either let go of med kick, as Keno stated, or hold until Lev.3 FA. Dash forward, release TAP, ultra or super cancel into super(using kicks) after TAP. Really fucking cool. Thanks again.
Also, Hold all 3 punch + med kick for FA, backdash then TAP may be a good mind trick to get way with once. Will have to try it later and see if people would bite on that bait.
A little pro-tip for the pro-tip:
Don’t ever use FA -> TAP unless you just want to be flashy or when it will win you the round/match anyways. I used it for about an hour back in May, then went home to actually check the damage out in Training and was sorely disappointed.
It does about 6% less damage than just FA3, dash, c.MP xx HP Headbutt.
And I’m talking about a painfully, precisely timed Lvl2 TAP followup. Lvl1 TAP followup isn’t even remotely worth it outside of “looking cool”, the damage is bunk.
I believe you missed the part about FA as an anti-air.
Nope, just referring to Keno talking about using it post-stun.
Using FA as an anti-air is lol.
especially considering that balrog’s dash is like the worst in the fucking game. Slow as shit and has less range than a fucking throw.
You gotta be psychic to catch someone with an AA focus. Not everybody has the keno eye :wgrin:
Keno/Jay -
Thank you for posting your continued insight. It is not falling on deaf ears – highly appreciated.
Now get back to the lab.
Hi.
I dont understand how you are ‘clearly in frame advantage’ after a whiffed lp headbutt? Why not just walk forward and crouch jab? Sorry if its a dumb question, thanks.
the other fighter will still be waking up after your whiffed headbutt so you can still meaty them.
