Adon Strategy and Match-up Thread

Okay ive read some of the information on the dudley matchup. Heres my predicament. A friend of mine plays dudley a fair bit and does a few annoying things. 1 that bloody ex counter thing. So annoying, I guess just empty jumping to bait it ?
Then heres the next.
He does a f+hp followed by a hp. Now I know they dont have the best range but he always seems to catch me with them. Especially the 2nd hp which seems to have a fast startup while the first has good recovery. The damage is insane too.

Next he does a cr.mp xx lp.mgb over and over. A bit like what viper does with her shock fist thing.
I find it insanely hard to punish this. Especially in the corner. It feels like I dont have time to jump, and the recover on his lp.mgb is so fast, I dont think I have anything with which to counter it ?

Finally the last thing is that his jumping hk? the elbow seems to beat pretty much everything I can do in the air and sometimes it seems to beat out my AA rj’s but this could be due to timing issues ?

Any help on the dudley matchup would be great. I find that once I have him on the floor hes pretty much free unless I mess up. I also find that if I do any jk’s on block, he can get 200-300 damage on me :frowning:
Anyone else have these problems ?

  • For EX cross counter, either do what you said, empty jump to bait it, or I believe it is vulnerable to Low Attacks, so sweep him for the HKD. ( I’m not 100% on it being vulnerable to lows but I’m actually pretty sure.)

  • f+fp->s.fp problem, you could probably just backdash after the forward fierce and catch him on the standing fierce.

  • c.mp->lp mgb… eh you can’t punish lp mgb, it’s completely safe, might try backdashing after the lp mgb, if he tries to do it again, the c.mp will whiff and you might get touched (and reset during the lp mgb) but you won’t just be sitting there eating the whole thing.

  • Dudleys j.RH is a beast, your s.mk will trade (in dudleys favor), but I’ve beaten it before with s.fp (but this seems hit or miss)
    shrugs

You can’t really let dudley get in on you for his offense to begin in the first place cus he’s hard to get off of you and has plenty of mixup (as you’ve experienced). Keep pressure on him and make him wast his meter on ex jet uppers and cancels to get YOU OFF of him. That whole fight is based on who has the offensive momentum. You can Footsie Dudley all day as well and he’ll have to risk jumping or ducking to get in on you.

If he consistently always does the same thing, you want to try to read him and focus it. Depending on range, there may be literally nothing you can hit him with between punches. There’s an eight frame gap between the attacks, but you need something that has both range and priority, in addition to coming out in 8 frames or less. Standing MP might work if he’s close enough.

Neutral jump after the mgb. If he tries to do it again, land on him with roundhouse. Once you train him that he can’t do that over and over for free, watch out for anti-air. The main thing here is to break his habits. Get him to hesitate and watch what you do and that will create openings for you.

Yes, it is due to timing issues. Basically, you want to utilize the easy inputs of DP motions, allowing you to do RJ from a crouching position. RJ only has a little invulnerability on startup, so you want to wait until Dudley is low enough that he’d be able to hit you if you were standing up (but he won’t because you’re crouching).

Also, Adon’s j.MP has RETARDED priority. And by that I mean it’s amazing. If he’s predictably jumping in on you, jump back MP will poke him out of the air. You can also try to make use of Adon’s close normals, such as cs.HK, cs.MP, and cs.LP, but these are risky and trade a lot.

Some things to add to the Bison matchup just in case it hasn’t been mentioned.

  • c. forward is a GREAT counter-poke to Bisons s.RH, since it basically guarantees JK pressure as long as you’re buffering while you’re poking

Hey guys, I’m an Elf player looking for a good Adon to train with on PSN. I don’t have much good Adon experience and I’m sure a lot of you don’t have much good Elf experience so maybe we can help each other out. Add me and we can get some games in, I’ll be on tomorrow from about 530p-8p central time. Thanks in advance.

I got bored and decided to take a break on a paper I’m doing, decided i’d browse through some of the asian region replays. I’m noticing quite a few Adon players over there have taken to using jumping light kick as a primary cross up.

anyone have any reason behind it? I only use it to add more ambiguity to my jump ins, thats about it and thats only sometimes

Huh… i might be mistaken, but i think when you mk cross up to cr.lp, if opponent blocks, you cant follow with a close st.HP for frame trap as it will give you a far st HP animation. I think that might be why you would use lk as a cross up, so after that cr.lp, you’re still close enough to bait a grab and go for close st HP. so i think…

Anyone wanna explain why wake-up jab is so effective for GB?

He probably plinks lp~lk to option select c.lp and tech and not do lk since lp is faster. Since people are not used to the timing they get hit by the c.lp anyway.

About crossup lk, it has a godly hitbox, better than MK and possibly the best crossup hitbox in the game. Range for the blockstring might be another reason too.

I’ve been playing so bad for the past week or so that I don’t feel like I should post strats. iAJK is starting to become a chore. Since I noticed how many more frames HK iAJK gives I’ve been trying to really master it. You can get away with being sloppy on the LK and MK, but nailing an iAJK (the 9214 version) that hits all crouchers 100% of the time is serious fucking buisness. Don’t tell me to TK it, the uses are not the same, please don’t make me write a fucking essay.

It reminds me of tekken EWGF, only harder, then you start focusing on doing it and you play shitty. Well, expectations about nerfs in the patch probably kill my motivation a little too, I dunno, there’s definitely something wrong with my play right now.

about VS dudley and his 2LP lp.MGB, on hit or block, i wouldn’t do anything but tech throw escape lately, or Rising Jaguar Cancel if i’ve got a cancel.

knowing how i play dudley, after lp.MGB on hit (+2), i often do another lp lp.MGB.
And on block (-2) i like to dragon EX to punish the opponent for ever thinking that -2 is safe for him to poke. I try to throw only if i check the opponent is often blocking after lp.MGB (which he should otherwise he will eat what it told above)

-> so vs dudley, i’ll poke with st.HK at enough distance to hit the tip of his st.HP or 6HP, or 2MP cancel hk.JK.

problem with dudley , is that his st.HP eat Jaguar kicks often, i need more testing. Maybe it would be better, after a 2MP to do a quick Focus Attack in order to have a counter, with backdash if without success.

I’d rather use s.FP over s.HK, cause of the range of the fierce. Sometimes you’re too close to hit with s.HK. It stuffs he FP’s

happening to me all week to

I didn’t play for a day and then i pick the game up and i couldn’t even do consistant iAJKs. so frustrating sometimes.

so i thought i’d try and figure out how to make Jaguar Kick cross up on purpose and so far i’ve gone it to work in the corner and anywhere on the stage but it is super tricky and probably not safe at all. Pretty much only works on crouching opponents so if you’re against someone who likes to downback, it could be useful

in the corner:
if you do cr. mk and then cr. lk -> lk/mk Jaguar Kick, it will cross up.

anywhere else:
cr. hp then lk. jaguar kick

This all depends on the position and character wise, so its not 100% guaranteed.

It works wonders against Honda and Blanka since they are kinda “wider”. Best way to do it will be after a mk crossup ( blocked ), then a combination of c.lps and/or c.mp into lk jk. All depends on position so nothings guaranteed. Shame that you cant follow up with something if it hits … or maybe in counter? mmmmh …

Any vital information for playing against Ibuki,Ken,Balrog or Gouken?I got a tournament tommorow.

Yeah the cross up jaguar kick is 100% character specific. It works off the same setup every time though, but since the behavior is different on basically every character, you’d have to do a lot of memorising to really use it.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as an occasional shenanigan though if you took the time to learn it. I don’t believe it changes the properties of the MK jk which is safe anyway (cept SPD yadda yadda) and LK JK which is semi-safe cept for reversal dragonpunches or people with good timing on their normal punishes. The point is to not have it blocked anyway.

I wonder how it behaves against people who reversal during the string.

Any advice on the Abel matchup? I got destroyed by a super solid Abel yesterday at a tournament, and I want to learn that match up for future occasions…What the general strategy for this one???

What the fuck can Adon do against Fei Longs Rekka pressure? its so fucking dumb. Can’t even escape the corner without eating an anti air.

some just constantly pressure with the single rekka and just hit confirm off anything I try and escape with

I usually treat it as another grapple kind of match, but still try and keep the corner pressure. keep out with roundhouse and pushin the rolls with a throw. Watch out for Tornando throw mix ups if he gets on you. I’ve had some Abels use Wheel Kick on me and it’s something to look out for cause it’s like the one move Abels sneak in once in a blue moon. Reacting to them with a hk Rising Jag sort of stops them from using it

A lot of abels normals beat out adons normals

So why is the Dhalsim matchup 6-4 again?I went into the lab with a friend and we found out some things.Cr.strong and cr.jab are good for whiff punishing Dhalsims ground limbs. Also option select after the safejump with EX jaguar tooth rapes him because it crosses him up if he teleports.

But how do you actually get in?He has so many options against the jaguar kick and he basically creates a wall around him whenever he does a yoga fire,he can just control you with fierces inside that wall.Adons narrow jump doesnt help him out at all.
