I am having a hard time playing lately, I have been described as “too deserpate to get in.” I end up getting killed by pokes, then I get jumped in and gg. Anyways my question is what is Adons footsies? st.hk right? What other tools should I be using?
Like with any character just be patient and mix up your methods of “getting in”. Adon’s tools to get in -
IAJK
Jaguar kick
jump normal/empty jump
HK Jaguar Tooth
walk/dash
Getting a knockdown might make this easier too. If you’re patient enough and can land a -
throw (untechable)
sweep (untechable)
rising jaguar (random/anti-air/punish etc)
You follow up backthrow with a safe jump/unblockable on shotos. They setup is slight walk back, jump MK if I remember correctly. Can’t remember Adon’s other safe jumps.
Once you’re comfortable with those things, you could probably move onto frame traps.
I don’t know what level Adon you are, some/all of this you may know. I don’t know. I’m just trying to cater to the question you posted.
Being patient is my biggest problem and often I get killed easy. Often when I knock someone down I usually follow up with j.mk for the cross-up, but I try not to against characters that have 3-4 frame dps because I often eat a dp on wake up when im trying to jump on them. So approaching those characters I am not confident at all and I look at it like big risk low reward situation.
.Walking back and forth then throwing a jk sometimes works butttt against better players I usually throw out a jk and I GET STUFFED. I mean either a dp on reaction or simply a jab normal. Then im like “DAMN! What do I do now?”.
Frame traps im having issues with, basically hit confirming off a “counter hit”, thats new to me. When I get one im all gitty but man I have no idea how to follow up. Reaction wise, so for instance I do cr.jab ~ st.hp sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. The st.hp will whiff on entirely on crouching opponents or I get the hit and im shocked it worked and I fail to follow up.
I have a long way to go, but im looking forward to challenge of getting better.
The easiest and most reliable Adon frame trap is probably uses his close st.MK. It’s usually used cr.LK, st.MK OR cr.LP, st.MK OR jump in attack then wait a bit, then st.MK.
If you land st.MK on counter-hit or even just regular hit (just listen the hit sound or look for the counter-hit message on the screen), then link into cr.LP > LK rising jaguar. FADC it into U2 if you have the meter and think it would be worth the damage at the time.
The sound cue only works in Adon’s case because on hit, close st.MK actually links into cr.jab normally. Other characters counter-hit combos, you will have to look for the counter-hit message.
For example, Balrog’s close st.HK > sweep only combos when close st.HK is on counter-hit.
Just wanted to make that clear.
I made this vid a while ago. Briefly show you what the frame trap looks like.
Thanks to Kikimaru and Bob – that was exactly what I was looking for! Re: midnightgreen, yeah, it sounds like we play the same way. I really like Adon’s ability to shift gears from a solid footsies game to a suffocating rushdown style to the point where it’s pretty much why I main him, so it’s cool to see that others feel the same way.
@ Super Sick Case: all of Delusional’s ideas advice is really good. If I can add to that just in case you want some ideas how to play the footsies game with Adon, st.hk is good as far as normals go, just be careful how you space it as you can get hit with a focus if you prod people with the end of it and get predictable. fst.mk and cr.hp are really good pokes, too, but really all of his normals are good – just experiment with anything heavier than a jab/light kick and you’ll figure out a rhythm you’re comfortable with.
I know you said you were having some trouble staying patient – I know it’s hard, but most people will give you the opportunity if you give them the rope with which to hang themselves, so work on that. Adon’s a great patient character, even moreso because people expect you to blindly rush down.
I don’t really think the st mk is a really good poke , it whiffs against crouching character and the damage are not really good compared to the st hp which has almost the same frame data and it’s really good against dive kick , particularly against Rufus.
With Adon it’s almost hk all the day , this move is just so good , the others pokes are situational , cr hp to whiff punish some hk ( Ryu , Chun-Li , Cody , Dicta …) , cr mp to whiff punish cr mk , sweep against people who like to walk back when you rush them.
About the frame trap with cl mk or cl hp , don’t forget , it’s doesn’t work against standing tech throw , it’s here where the mix-up begins with a space rj fadc , jk and iajk , you opponent must be afraid to tech thow.
Look at Wong’s Adon if you want to see a patient Adon , he wins most of his fight almost without the jk , but it’s not easy to have his level of footsies and patience , there is some fights against Tokido , but it’s old :
If you really wanna hammer on learning counter hits and getting that into your system, I recommend spending some time playing as Dan. Unlike Adon, he doesn’t have a mid-range game at all, and obviously his projectile has horrible range. So his only real option is to get in close and start up a pressure game there. But even then, he lacks an overhead, so there really is no high/low mixup on his end. Basically, it’s counter-hit and bait for him. If you can get good at utilizing his skill set to get counter-hits and baits, you can do it with anyone in the game.
Im sorry guys, I dont know where to put this and I didnt want to create a new thread in you guys’ forum, but I’m looking for some good Adon players to spar with. This character is just the bane of my existence seems like. Anyone interested? Preferably XBL. I play Gouken and if it helps I’m #16 on PSN. I just got a 360 for the better competition and am currently #39 working my way back up. I’m just looking for some Adon players to spar with so I can learn to deal with this character better.
Adon is pretty straightforward. His jaguar kick and IAJK are sorta the equivalent of Bison’s scissors, except that JK is -2/3 or something like that on block. Even on hit, I think JK can still be SPD’ed.
His combos aren’t really complicated. You can use jabs and shorts to combo into cr.MP or RJ (LK usually the go to version because MK can whiff if you’re too far, but if you know you’re in range for MK RJ then go for it).
Then you got instant overheads - nj.MK and nj.HK. nj.MK can be cancelled into IAJK (sometimes use the EX version for a hard knockdown).
His frame trap buttons are close st.MK and close st.HP. The latter being a very slow frame trap though.
And of course having a dp to play mind games, blow up crouch tech and anti-air is always a bonus. It can be difficult sometimes though to get a clean dp anti-air with Adon. EX has the most invincibility, if not then use HK, but not always guaranteed.
The main thing stopping me from using Adon well is being able to do IAJK consistently. It comes out fast as hell and has significant frame advantage on block and hit (the only downside is that it doesn’t break FA). You can really lock someone down if you can pull off this move well.
Thanks for that. Yeah his dp is kinda weird for me to adjust to. I mean with Yun’s for example, I can just throw it out when I know it’s gonna hit, whereas Adon’s I kinda hesitate to throw it out. Normally when I hesitate, I end up throwing it out and I miss (then got told it would have hit). His IAJK is actually hard to deal with against someone who knows how to use it aggressively. I’ve only faced one really good Adon that uses it well, and they gave me serious problems. I like Yun, he’s very fun to use and you got GJ, but he doesn’t hit as hard as Adon, he does stun pretty fast though once you can get in. I was previously trying Cammy/Viper/Seth/Akuma, not sure if Akuma and Viper can even be used as a secondary, they take quite a lot of time to master.
Edit: Tried Adon for a little while yesterday, dropped his BnBs a lot. I guess it’s because I’m used to Bison’s and his light normals are faster.
When I see a lot of top adon’s pressuring (for example gamerbee) I see them using a jaguar kick after cr.mp following a blockstring/frame trap. Is that iajk or regular jk because using the qcb uf k method I can get almost 100% consistent iajk but I can’t cancel fast enough following a cr.mp so is it just regular jk.
I’m just going to assume it is the regular jaguar kick because he says jaguar kick when gamerbee does it rather than the ayahh when you do an air jaguar kick.
Also what is he on fa2 (blocked) dash forward and on dp fadc forward? If he is positive what are the best options afterward?
I’m guessing regular jk since it can be cancelled into it. I planned on using Adon at a tournament, but 1 day isn’t enough time for me. I’m still having problems with his combos despite people saying it’s easy.
What do you guys do when you’re too far to hit someone with a LK RJ off of a hit confirm? For example when you do his safe jump from forward throw and hit them crouching, c.LP, c.LP, LK RJ doesn’t seem to work.
I also don’t really know what to do with safe jumps. I jump, they block. What now?
Hey guys. Im not sure if its necessary to know this playing Adon intermediately, but I would like to know what is the input you guys put in for his instant air jaguar kick. i have the inputs exactly as shown in training mode (number form)
8lk

This is how it shows to do it in eventhubs but still no luck. Is there any suggestions out there for me?
What I normally do is apply pressure. Most of the time they will block low after the jump in, so I would either go for the overhead since you can link it with 2lp, or as u jump in for the safe jump, neutral jump and hit them with mk. Also you can tick throw after a 2lp and make them guess whether your gonna hit or grab although they will probably os. Tbh what i do is go random. Ill jump on one side and then immediately jump on the other side. You just gotta throw them off and be unperdictable.
Also try doing 2lk 2lp instead of 2lp 2lp. 2 lk is 40 dmg, hits low, and is 5+ on frames, which is the same as 2lp. and as for you being too far, try walking up a bit in between 2lp, its a good frame trap because you got 2 frames to walk up on block, plus it has a 3 frame startup so you can catch almost anything. If they do not mash, use jaguar kick lk, then os 3 lk+lp
