The SBO Arcana situation was a good thing? Sounded like a scheme to push an expensive ‘upgrade’ to me.
So someone that does nothing all year, and pcks up AC 2 days ago, qualifies as motivated enough…
And the person that actually practices and prepares for the game that was announced a long time ago, who foolishly assumes that annoucing a game means it will be there, is now unmotivated…
If there are guilty gear players that are and have been serious about the game, two days ago was not the first time they saw AC. They’ve been following developements in the game through either the Japanese scenes or through what comes out of Houstin/TGA. There are large parts of the GG community that had pretty much stopped playing GG in general just because they know that since AC has come out, Slash no longer mattered. In the grand scheme of things, what does winning this years tournament really mean if it’s in slash? Congratulations, you just proved you are the best player of a dead game. Sure, Slash is still a viable and wonderful game to play competitively, and I’m not trying to devalue a guilty gear slash tournament.
I think the biggest question thta needs to be asked here is: Is this event supposed to be the biggest Guilty Gear tournament in America, or the biggest Slash tournament in America? When you answer that, I think it’ll be easier to deal with the AC/Slash debate.
The scene you described doesn’t sound very competitive ouside of TGA/Houston/Japan, players watching youtube, waiting for updates from the few players who have ther game, I thought that was the kind of scene we were trying to move away from! Shouldn’t playing the game be a part of the process?
A bigger question is what makes up the competitive GG scene, is it really going to be people that want to watch
youtube and listen to 2nd hand info 10 months of the year? Is that all we expect from a major fighting game?
Seriously. Who TRULY practiced Slash for Evo for months now because they thought they had a shot at top 8 without knowing that Accent Core was coming out around now?
I see your point about switching games midstream but I don’t think this example applies to real life.
It is still guilty gear… all the same base tactics before still apply, now there are just new combos and new moves to get used too honestly I don’t think it’s that bad, and aside from people complaining about the new top tier or how everyone does tons of damage or some such, I think the majority of GG players want AC to be the event.
I mean it’s a matter of semantics, but “easy-mode” implies “effective” and while it’s true Johnny has less options at his disposal now he still has to work hard and be creative to produce results.
The game IMO is much more technical than it looked watching it, even for characters who are supposed to be all cheap like Testament, Jam and Potemkin. I’m not saying it doesn’t have the new-game randomness going for it, but when you really take to the game to the lab and analyze all the characters they’ve got a lot of new stuff you can learn.
Agreed. This gets said every once in a while but how many people actually come out and say “I’m practicing Slash like crazy and will be screwed when AC hits?” Compare that to the people who’ve already dropped the game.
FMJaguar:
Cali and Chicago have the game. 2 Cali players, a guy from Pittsburgh, and 2 Chicago players showed up to SBO quals- the Chicago dudes were easily some of the better players there, and the Pittsburgh guy impressed everybody.
I vote Accent Core for the reasons already mentioned.
it’s a better game than Slash
most of the GG decent to hardcore players have moved onto AC, so they would be more interested in an AC tourney rather than a Slash tourney
I’m personally not going to Evo but it would be far more entertaining to see an AC tourney rather than a Slash one
One downside to this was that since the game is newer, this tournament would be less experienced (and thus more rusty looking). But, I think there is enough time to improve on that, especially with the console release now giving people more than enough time to practice.
Yeah so… it should be Accent Core. Like countless people have mentioned, most people that really care about Guilty Gear have been following AC since its arcade release in Japan, and probably by now are playing the PS2 version. I don’t want to play Slash anymore. There’s no point. And it’s not like it’s become a completely different game. It’s still Guilty Gear.
He refers to the fighting game fundamentals. Generally the majority of the guilty gear games focus on the same fundamentals. AC does have some some changes but they don’t change the og tactics much. This is why the hardcore players were able to pick up AC just a week or so after they started playing it - because they already had the GG fundamentals from the previous games.
I voted for AC, because it’s obvious that the vast majority of the community has switched over. The only possible outcome of having Slash at evo is to keep people playing an outdated game that no one really cares about for two months after the new one is released. Accent Core is newer and better (More diverse and competitively interesting).
Which is exactly why we should have AC at Evo. By having slash at Evo, you’re essentially forcing all the players who want to seriously compete to allow a new, better game to take a backseat for fully two months.
Right, so you complain that the scene has been reduced to theory and watching videos, which really happened because everyone was watching a new game that they couldn’t play yet. Now that people have the game and ARE PLAYING IT, you argue that we should make them stop and play an old game no one cares about anymore so that people will start playing the game and stop watching videos? I’m sorry to say that I don’t follow your logic. How the hell is playing Slash supposed to accomplish that?
ACCENT CORE, it’s time for a new direction and we have been given an NEW game. I don’t even have a ps2 and I want this shit! Is there any day that we’ve been given for an announcement? I mean if it’s slash i’m going to play a different character in ac to get ready. Get hype!!!
I’m seeing like… 76% AC on the poll, so I think it’s a safe bet. Hopefully, ArcSys will release their bug-free version before evo, but playing on the current version wouldn’t be horrible.
