I’ve noticed that alot of people are getting tired/bored/whatever of the scene. I want reno’s scene to stay alive, and help other players grow into top players. However, when I try to run a bi-weekly and no one shows up, what am I to do? How will I get comp when every weekend, if it’s not a tournament, it’s like 5 people? I’m perposing that we meet up either once or twice a week, for a few hours of gaming goodness at Atlantis.
The problem is, people will bitch “well it costs money! and since i’m not winning, why should we play there”… well, obviously we have to play to improve, and if you don’t play, you stagnate. I can’t bring out my Axl in GGXX when people only want to show up for tournaments, and then I get beatdown because I have no casual competition. =\
Well, what is everyone’s thoughts? I’m working every day of the week almost, so I don’t care WHAT day it is. I’ll show up after work for a good 2-3-4 hours if I can, just to play people. Is anyone with me?
I’ve proposed the idea before…you guys can always feel free to practice at my house if you want…everyone except me has their own joysticks and whenever Jr. comes to pick up one of his checks:evil:, I’ll have a copy of GGXX…maybe we can work out a rental program with Rob for some of the other games, too…
And the best part is that I only charge a small hourly rate instead of $.50 a game like the Atlantis…If you sign-up for a membership I’ll even pro-rate half-hour sessions…
hey what is this Jolly Roger Arcade crap? does anyone know where it is supposed to be? (like more specifically then Sparks) does anyone know what it will have for 3D games?
Jolly Roger’s Arcade is a total unknown about the games they’re getting at this point. The actual location is inside the multi-color multi-story complex inside the Marina. 1st floor, 2nd complex to the right… It has little flyers up about it.
Well, if everything except for the construction schedule is still going ahead as planned, you can count on the awesome 3D fighter, “Fighting Vipers,” but NOT “Fighting Vipers: 2”
My Picky will tear you a new one with his skateboard…
Well what Rob said to me, Paul has this idea. His idea is have a tourney, but have no actual entry fee. Meaning we’re playing the tourney for free. What I’m wondering is this. How many will actually take the tourney seriously, knowing in fact that there is no pot that you’re playing for? That’s the biggest concern that I thought off with this idea. Seriously, I am down with it, assuming we’re going to have a tourney every month, not every other week. That’s just me. As for this arcade in Marina, is this the actual acrade that one of our clients actually co-owns? If it is, well, then we’re doubtful what games he’ll be getting. But assuming he does pull off some crazy stuff, and actually gets a good thing going, this place would prolly have a #reload (least I hope we get it there LOL, but then again, it’s really doubtful). Ok, here’s what we also said about the free entry tourney. What’s going to happen is have it either Single Elim 2/3 OR Double Elim, single game matches. What I think they’re trying to think off is this. We’re going to immitate the japanese tourney’s. But like I said, how many are willing to take this seriously?
JP: I think the best idea to do this method (Rob agrees with me as being a good idea) is to have 2 tournaments a month. Bi-weekly, we’ll have a japanese style tournament (no cash prize, single elimination, 2/3 games for every game). Once a month, we’ll have american style tournaments ($1-$5 entry, 70/20/10 split for 1st/2nd/3rd, double elimination, 3/5 finals and 4/7 for grand finals). I think this promotes the players to come out, and PRACTICE every other week that we DON’T have tournaments. Also it encourages peeps to really play their best every time they play.
I had a lot to say about the topic tonight, but I just erased it because almost everyone is talking about GGXX anyways…I’ll just summerize some key points…
Tournies all the time, everyday is fine by me, I guess…I play seriously and I want to win whether I’m playing in a tournament or not…at home, in a tournament or casual arcade doesn’t matter to me…I guess some people need that extra $8 motivation or having the title of number one to play their best…but if I beat you the last time we played, I know I’m better and vice versa, unfortunatly…no excuses on my end…
I’m not competing in GGXX tournies anymore because I don’t play the game seriously…I’m not a threat to anyone really…I’m okay at the game and I’ve beat everyone’s everyone at least once, but I’m not going to take up space in a bracket when I know that the people that really want to learn the game should be playing eachother…with that in mind, I’d like to know who (if anyone) wants to play me in Third Strike…?
I’m going to be Reno’s Third Strike MASSA, and I’d like to know who wants to be my training dummy…who wants to learn the game with me, get really good at it and then lose to me over and over and over because I’m going to be the best? I’m only going to EVO next year if I feel confident in at least 3 or 4 games and I’d like for Thrid Strike to be my best one…
What is the point of learning 3rd Strike if we don’t have a 3rd Strike machine anywhere?
I guess my opinion is irrelevant because I don’t play 2D games… but… Paul is certifiably tournament crazy. Bi-weekly Japanese style tourneys plus a monthly American style tourney adds up to 3 tournaments a month as near as I can tell. Too many tournaments seems like it is turning something fun into a job. I just go back to MotoGP for XBox.
Isn’t there one at Circus??? I haven’t been to the lower part of there arcade for a while, but I heard there sticks sux. 3rd Strike is probably the best 2d fighting game I ever played, but sorry, I don’t want to become a training dummy, I’m already your training dummy for SC2.
Paul, the way you said it, that counts as 3 tourney’s in a month, as Gary puts it. You sure you really read what you’re putting down here? I’m down with the tourneys, I dont’ care, I’m just asking how many here, and I mean EVERYONE HERE is going to take every freaking tourney we’re going to hold SERIOUSLY? This is a huge concern since if there’s no money are they willing to put everything on the line? If you don’t think this is a huge reason then what’s the point of holding a free entry fee tourney? What so that they can just have one of the top 5 players be their first match and lose? And then later on say, well there’s no money involve, so I really didn’t care much. The tourney would end up being a casual match instead of being an actual tourney. Put up the bi-weekly’s, I’m up for it, I don’t care. Just make it clear for everyone. Are they willing to try their best every single tourney, even though it’s free.
JP
Oh, and L’arc En Ciel, well lets see, I have 3 cd’s of them before (even though I don’t freaking understand a single word they’re saying), 1 is already f00ked up, the other 2 is still intact. Have you heard 4th Avenue Cafe? That’s the song they used for 1 of Kenshin’s ending theme, I know Denmark didn’t like it, but me and Bremenn did. Also try Caress of Venus, I like the beat on that one, sounds like an anime ending theme. And oh, the opening theme for DNA^2. That is one of my favorite beats that they have :D. If you want I can lend you the CD’s if you wanna see their songs :D.
I’ve got 8 L’arc CD’s on my computer if any of you foos want to leech that shit. My favorites are Dive to Blue, Snow Drop, Shizukano Umide, and, well shit, pretty much all of the rest.
I’ll play serious if I sign-up, but I don’t think I’ll be signing-up for tournamts as often as we’re having them…you can put me down as a no then, since I’m not going to be in every single one…
They also did some tracks for Metropolis, if any of you have seen that movie…
As for the tournament stuff, bi-weekly sounds ok; I would still prefer to have one every week, but if that’s too much for people it’s cool.
Money has never been much of a concern for me since I know I’ll never win it, but besides that, the rush of playing is far better than the measly ass pennies I would come away with anyways.
L’arc en Ciel supporter since forever. Actually, about 6 years now.
I don’t play to win unless there is something on the line. $1 entry fee is nothing, so I won’t take that seriously. I suggest one tournament a month, $5 entry fee double elim.
And seriously: if we just keep saying “Lower the prices, the bigger the community will grow” is stupid. We have it down to what… a buck right now, and all I EVER see is the same people coming every time. If you want a bigger outcome: advertise the fuck out of everything. post it in the Tournaments thread, DDRFreak, make a new TOPIC for tournament, ETC. Don’t just lower the prices. The only people that will know about that is the regulars, and they are willing to pay ANY amount of money to compete, so it is virtually useless.
No enrty fee means no donuts bought with prize money which means no motivation for my fat ass. Seriously a tourney’s a tourney’s, shit I take lag fighter tournies for real. One thing I can’t take seriously is cvs2 at the atlantis, that 2nd player side is screwball and will always be, plus I hate how their sticks are soft, cause my 360 is as stiff as a cock. I think console tournies with no entry are cool to me, we could do the single elim 2/3 and have some tournies for ST or 3rd strike or marvel2 and reload and cvs2. When’s the next tourney(XX or reload??) because I haven’t practiced any guilty for a long time and well cvs2 I get lagfighter practice where I use wacky teams that Nick Y. OCV’s with his r2 blanka. Necro owns and Ryu rock ST any way we do it’s fine with me.
Well how many are showing up to Andrei’s party tonight cause we should start talking about this seriously. The only reason why this started was the idea of immitating the Japanese tourney’s. meaning no money is involved. None, zero, caput. And yet why are they so dominating even without cash prize being involved? Thats the whole reason why Paul had that idea. If you guys see it that way you guys may understand it. I guess it’s just me though, shrug. To who ever is going to the party, see ya’ll there.
Japan is dominant for the same reason they always have been. High population density mainly and no cultural taboo on gaming. I’ve also heard a good theory that the back to back cabinets make you concentrate on reading your opponent every single game, rather than be like oh so and so is up so I’ll use my anti-so an so strategy. I don’t think tournament style has anything to do with why Japan is good. And as far as taking tournaments seriously, Buktooth’s report makes it sound like Japanese don’t take their weekly tournaments seriously.
this whole line of thought is flawed. ‘Have more tournaments so that people will be more likely to come even when there is no tournament so they will be ready for torunament’ makes no sense to me.
Shit we should not do is this half assed, post at 5 PM the night of a tournament: ‘oh someone said we having a tourney so I guess we are but who knows which games and who knows what start time.’ I think monthly is the way to go. Make it regular some how (i.e. third weekend of the month or something). And post it on all the usual sources… srk tourney forum… tragic’s site… sc.com if it’s for that game.
Hell the community isn’t very big. You can probably identify all of the people who are random attendees who you would like to be more regular. Just talk to them in person next time you see them and find out whats they think. Stop by old spots like CC and Hilton on Fri and Sat nights and see if any old regulars don’t know about Atlantis yet.
I’ve been playing (tekken mostly) since the Tekken 3 days at Eldorado. There was one tournament ever in Tekken. Tournaments never affected the health of that community. You always knew pretty much who the best player was and where you stood relative to everybody.
The subtext here seems to be being competitive on a national level and Reno making a name for itself. If that is a realistic goal I don’t think the players who just fill out the bracket at tournaments help. You can probably get more done by trying to make get togethers more productive. Make more of an emphasis on studying the game. Testing shit out should be higher priority than playing games. So if you are playing and you get some weird unexpected move beating another… stop every thing and dig into that. If somebody is sucking at anti airs or some other specific aspect of the game play with a bunch more jump ins, or whatever it will take to help him out. Having more than 4 people at a gathering is probably counterproductive to learning anything. Having some jackass whining his ass off while he’s not playing doesn’t help anything.
You guys seemed to have worked pretty hard and had a bunch of tournaments before the last two EVO’s but weren’t really happy with the results. Are you doing training in any way now that is different from the last times?
