wow I was just about to ask this exact same question because my gf loved it last year. So pretty much for an attendee pass all my friends have to register,
and not list any games? am I understanding this correctly?
My wife just signed up. She said that it seemed like a reasonable fee, as most conventions are much more. If you assume the shirt is $20, that makes $30 for an entire day’s entertainment seem quite fair.
This doesn’t have to deal with ‘wanting everything free’. I’m sure some will agree with that but the bigger issue is that EVO is less than 2 months away and they make this announcement. People have already bought their plane tickets and hotel and have a certain expectation in mind. Budgets were planned and I bet you some of these people (gfs, friends, etc) were going for both the Vegas experience and EVO. It was initially all free. Now, with the fact that you have to pay $50 to watch finals, it is going to turn a lot of people off. In addition to that, the second player in the SFxT teams has to pay $50 as well even though this was never announced when teams were first signing up.
This isn’t even close to comparable to the Super Bowl or Cubs games and you know this. You know for a fact that you have to pay for them, even before going to the game. If the Super Bowl was free and you bought plane tickets and hotel and then you find out that to watch the game in person, you have to pay for it two months before the event, you are going to be upset. And rightly so.
Personally, I think paying $50 for the whole weekend is fine because let’s face it, you may be paying for one day, but you really are paying for the weekend. It would have been nice if there was just a spectator fee of like $25 for Sunday. If it was announced at the beginning that you have to pay for finals or that you need to pay for the weekend, then no one has a right to complain. You knew exactly what was going on before buying your plane, hotel, inviting your friends, and whatnot. But to spring this on them in the last minute just feels wrong.
it sounds an awful lot like people wanting everything for free. if you know anything about Vegas and how to budget for a trip there, $50 is a drop in the bucket. if suddenly the tournament is too much money now and the free ballroom isn’t good enough, you are going to spend a hell of a lot more than fifty bucks entertaining yourself elsewhere.
SFxT second player should have always had to pay $50. hell entry for that game should be an extra $50 per teammate on top of the venue fee, so that SFxT players can pay everybody else for having to suffer their game during finals day.
Um so being free is ok if you’re a player, but if you’re not it isn’t, and on top of that everyone wants stuff for free? Why complain about non players taking up a spot from players, then say how entering the tourney solves the problem? Enter the tourney and that takes care of it right. Evo is suppose to be an open event, a spectator is a spectator regardless. I’m sure the event organizers want and appreciate non gamers showing up to attend. Many of these people are probably closely related to those entering the tournament or those in the crowd who do play fighting games. So if you want the added privelege, sign up and pay the entrance fee.
Edit: Oh you’re talking about people who are playing at the tournament, not people who play fighting games in general.
People expecting something for free has nothing to do with it. The event has historically been free and that has nothing to do with peoples expectations but with what the organizers decided to do. They should have just organized it better and planned it likes this from the beginning, bottom-line, which is precisely what he’s saying. And I don’t think you understand what budgeting implies, because saying $50 bucks is a drop in the bucket in terms of trying to budget ones money is a contradictory statement.
Again, the point isn’t that $50 is a drop in the bucket. For some people it is, for others it isn’t. The bigger issue is coming that this announcement is being made less than two months before EVO. Same with SFxT second player registration. If it was like this since day 1, then no one has a right to complain. It would be all out in the open. Unfortunately, this is not the case and people who based their trip off of the initial announcement are now being put in a bind.
I always thought that it would be better if EVO would be a paid event. While I agree that it should not have been advertised in the beginning, “Spectating is free, bring your friends and family” and then not allow people to opt out once this change is implemented. (Not sure if getting a refund is possible now due to this change.)
In order for EVO to grow and hopefully pay for people like Spooky and commentators a professional amount of money, I think it is worth it.
Next year maybe we could pay for our reserved spectator seats so I can go to the bathroom on Sunday and not worry about somebody taking my front row seat or asking a stranger to try to hold my seat for me. Shit a football ticket during regular season cost more than $100 for maybe 4 hours of excitement. This isn’t a local tournament hosted at your local YMCA rec center. EVO is widely considered the Super Bowl, World Series, or NBA finals for fighting games. You are in a Grand Ballroom watching the best people in the world throwing down in Las Vegas. Having a seat at this event should not be free.
Here’s some food for though for anyone who’s complaining about this issue.
Would you like the chance to secure your spot in the room now?
or would you instead rather have Inkblot tell you a week before the tournament that the capacity of the room has been reached by the registered players alone, and now you have no chance to get in?
Think about it…
EVO last year had somewhere around 3000 registered players.
The capacity of the room should be somewhere 3500-3600
This event grows steadily every year.
If you don’t think that the decisions made by the EVO staff are reasonable, then there’s nothing I can do for you. The competitors are what make EVO what it is, and they should be the top priority, not your wife or friend who isn’t as passionate about the FGC like these players are.
Also, most importantly, given the time frame of this announcement.
It’s completely clear that the EVO staff had not predicted that it was going to be this huge.
This means that more than likely, EVO next year will be ready for such situation, so please, stop all the Illuminati Esports BS, as of now, we have no reason to believe that such practice is here to stay.
Evo having been an open tournament for spectators has always been a great thing. Nothing worse than showing up to a major and having the TO charge your ride 40 bills so he can watch you play.
Evo getting so big it is reaching capacity is a good thing. Having to pay for sunday tickets is a necessary evil and not being able to bring random people to see the hype for free is a great loss.
For sure though congrats to Inkblot, Ponder and MrWizard for getting to a point where they can get the fire marshalls to shut the venue down. That’s pretty damn amazing.
Then why promote *"*Spectating at Evo 2012 is free, so bring your friends!" only if you were to change that a month later?
I guess I’m just a bit turned off by how this has turned out. In all seriousness, props to Wiz and crew to for getting EVO to where it is today. Just wish that these announcements would have been known earlier as they do have an impact on my friends and whatnot.
Because it would suck for the people who paid to play and watch the finals to lose seats to free spectators. I know it appears like the Cannons are trying to cash in on nonsense but the money is more or less to ensure that the people that the community people are guaranteed to enjoy the live show. People paying to see sunday means that other people can still see the other two days but that the seats aren’t taking from those who played but lost in pools.
