Abel Wish List

I know there have been suggestions of Abel with a ground and pound super and ultra, but man, I wish Abel had Sean’s ground and pound from 3S, just like he has his kick.

Abels already perfect in SSF4 and thw Abel players are happy.

Lucky son of a… :bluu:

Te lariat bs is gone and gief has less health…making the matc up easier.

It will still be in Giefs favor but very playable.

Agreed the matchup MIGHT be like 6-4 now

Abel vs. Gief is scary because one knockdown = Abel loses. Zangief can OS throw any of Abel’s options on wakeup and even when you’re forced to block a jump-in, you have to deal with a Zangief right in your face. Abel’s options are… guess jump, which loses to Gief pokes (which lead to EX hand and more trouble), or try to backdash away and hope you can escape. Sometimes if you’re fortunate, you can guess EX or normal TT and get out. In general, though, Abel loses 50% or more of his health every time he’s knocked down.

Lariat is easily punishable by Abel, even in SF4, by a variety of things, including raw ultra. Abel can also hang at midrange with Gief by using standing strong, cr.MK, step kick (for huge damage), and sparingly wheel kick. If the Giefs you’re playing use lariat a lot (even on Abel’s wakeup) and you’re still losing, you’re playing poorly. MixupMaster, you should be thankful all you have to deal with on wakeup is lariat (where if you guess right you can punish AND escape trouble), because it could be way, way worse for you if the Gief knew what he was doing.

Lariat being worse will help the Gief/Abel matchup a little, because it’ll be easier to beat bad Giefs, but one knockdown will still be trouble. But that’s okay, you can’t win them all.

Personally I think Zangief will be terrible in SSF4. He’ll lose terribly to Sagat/Seth like he already does, he’s lost health, and he’s lost lariat priority. And he probably didn’t get anything in return.

But, since Sagat won’t be as dominant, he won’t be used as often. In an indirect way, that’s sort of a buff to Zangief.

A tourney Gief won’t have to worry about running into a sea of Sagats like he used to.

Eh, we’ll see about that. I still think Sagat is good enough to crack the top 8 characters, easily. It won’t be 25 Sagats in the top 50 BP earners, but it’ll still be a problem. Not to mention, maybe Seth will be top 8 as well… maybe a worse matchup than vs. Sagat! Plus, I think many of Gief’s matches are already 5-5 or 5.5-4.5 for Gief (he doesn’t rape the console characters nearly as bad as tier lists suggest), so a nerf seems like it’s going to make him really bad.

Theory fighter, of course. But yeah, I won’t derail this thread further.

How 'bout that Abel ultra 2, eh? Unblockable, fast, delayable, and absorbs a hit. It’s gonna be pretty hard to get out of!

all valid info except for the punishing larriat with ultra, their is a very small window to ultra and you definatly wont get that on wake up

i think abel will have a 5-5 match up wit gief because of the new ultra

Lariat is a huge problem in the Gief matchup because its a dragon punch that Abel has no way of avoiding. Its easy to punish sure but it is fast enough a reversal lariat after step kick beats all your options except normal throw and EX TT, which you likely won’t be doing because of SPD… you can’t do meaties to Gief because of lariat so you have no mixup game
Gief owns every range and stage of this fight. Its one of dumbest, most lopsided battles in vanilla SF4… the only worse one is probably Gief vs Seth

I actually disagree.

But if you’re actually trying to use Step Kick on Gief, I can see the match being really fucking hard. It’s a hard fight, no doubt. One of the toughest Abel has, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near as hopeless as others do.

Step kick is worth it when it lands and you get a stand fierce combo on him. That will usually make up for the 4 or 5 stand strongs you ate trying to do anything. But then you get another step kick that is blocked and nothing good will happen afterwards, so you have to use your best footsie tool very carefully. Then your stand strong… not bad in this fight but its easy to whiff punish with jab xx hand or strong. Your light kick is again not bad, but you lose trades 90 damage to 40 and Gief’s strong has more range. You have few oki options, and zero options on your own wakeup. Gief does more damage and takes more damage.

When two people of comparable skill play Abel vs Gief, the Gief will win the set every time. Only reason UltraDavid thinks the fight is 6-4 is because he’s not on Combofiend’s level… its a 7-3 straight up and Abel’s single worst matchup.

Man, does Abel’s new ultra look amazing. It’ll probably lose to certain moves (maybe two hit fireballs? regular tatsu on wakeup?), but for everyone else, it seems like a guaranteed hit when you knock them down from the right range, unless they’re very good at guessing. Plus, even if the opponent has ultra, not everyone’s ultra can do anything here. Throw ultras, things like Rose’s satellite ultra won’t do anything to stop Abel’s.

It almost looks unfairly good in some spots, to be honest. I guess we’ll find out more when the game comes out. It won’t be used in every matchup, but I think this ultra alone will give Abel a decided edge in several specific matchups.

From this match we can pretty much say that his new Ultra looks really really useful, specially the “hold the charge” feature.

Edit: Thanks the guy below me, I didn’t notice

:u:
He got hit by Dudley’s rose.

One reason why I really like his U2 is because it seems faster than U1, which is a very good. It still seems like a toss up between which Ultra will be preferable though. Doing U2 on wakeup seems like an interesting setup. Remember, you can cancel it too, lol and bait an armor breaking move. OK, that’s probably not a viable scenario.

You can also cancel Breathless right?

can somebody split the abel matches from the others? That shit was too hype

I’m glad they added that song into the stages. Was one my favorite themes from when they released the first set of Ultra 2’s

And his ultra 2 is OP

I’m really glad that U2 will add to abel’s mixup potential while also allowing ridiculously fast punishing. I think that it fits perfectly into his playstyle and I’m happy that they gave him one of the more interesting and tactical new ultras (by this I mean the ability to delay it plus focus absorb). good shit, can’t wait to test it out.
