I never judged him on specific mistakes. I think that’s dumb, and totally unfair. To expect perfect play at all times is ridiculous. The matches I posted, for example, took plce between 1-2:30 AM, at the end of a tournament I had been running since 3PM. Not only was I not even close to on point, but I had completely lost patience, so I was playing dumb too. So I understand how nit picking is dumb.
I didn’t do that. I commented on his style. I think his style reflects a lack of respect for Abel’s weaknesses, which would get him killed by any opponent aware of those weaknesses. That’s why I think he’s wack. Not one missed Ultra, or fucked up combo, or one questionable decision.
it was just two matches…but dont you think it’s actually a good idea to take advantage of a opponent when he doesn’t know your character’s weaknesses???..I mean would it make sense to play safe and turtle when ur opponent doesn’t know when ur opening is?..so i think his style was actually pretty good for the situation… plus we dont know if he actually plays that wreckless against all players…or maybe he is just a high risk high reward player

I vote that it doesn’t make sense. I played Chun Li against an Abel who knew what he was doing and I had no clue what to do as I have only run into one other Abel thus far and he turtled which posed no issue (I chained him to the bed and proceeded to wreak havoc upon him). But the uber aggressive one this weekend? He chained me to a pole and made Pinhead look like Mr. Rogers.
I still have flashbacks to that match. It was HORRIBLE.
I tried to rematch him but after he dominated me he didn’t want to taint it I guess.
But I am reading up on Abel and I will be ready for him (or her, I suppose) next time.
thanks much, this is a great resource for me. As i play many characters and like to see their matchups vs many different people. Too bad there are only enough vids for arcade matchups currently, but better than nothing
He really enjoyed getting hit by Rufus’s target combo into ultra, didn’t he?
Good use of resets in the Blanka match, but Blanka fell for it too much. He also was crossing up Blanka, which should be a no-no because of EX vertical ball. Also, he didn’t try far s.mp to stuff Blanka Ball.
Is it just me, or almost all of the Japanese Abels really boring to watch? Half the time they don’t even try to get close to their opponent. Am I missing something here?
You’re probably missing what I’ve been trying to get all of you guys to understand: Abel sucks up close at high level.
Low/intermediate? Go nuts. At high level, when opponents are actually aware of Abel’s options, you don’t really want to get close to almost any character in the game. Abel loses free up close to almost everyone.
How are Abel’s options any better at far or medium range? I mean, the only thing you can do from far away is wheel kick, and that’s a bad idea. And Abel is easy to jump in on, so you can’t really turtle. At medium range you only can really do far lk or f.mk, which moves you up close anyway. You can do CoD, but that’s unsafe.
If you wanna say Abel sucks in general, sure, you can make that argument pretty well. But that he does better at far range? I just don’t see it.
i agree and disagree at teh same time. if your opponent knows abels options your fucked up close but all in all if you know your opponents options he is screwed anyways. up close is where abel does his damage. i mean his medium range normals are good, st.mp,cr.mk, you know all those moves can be good and beat other pokes and what not but it will take abel a longer time to do damage at that range. also i wouldn’t necessarily say abel is easy to jump in on, if you master the timing of early cr.fp to launch they will be pretty afraid to jump in on. (for the most part) its super easy to do and you can still do damage after it even if you dont have ultra. turtling with abel is terrible and doesnt work for him hah.
Have you watched Japanese Abels play? They hang out in F+MK range and hit the links coming out of it 95% of the time… massive combos ensue. Dashing out of F+MK is no big deal if it is immediately followed by a TT or FP xx CoD
Well, that is the argument that I’ve been making… I just think Abel is a shit character, but I still think there’s an optimal way to play him, and staying close isn’t it. Turtling isn’t it either. At least not passive turtling. I think a semi-active style, ranging (not using wheel kick much at all), but featuring moments of up-close madness, when you can safely create those opportunities, is the way to go.
Too much offense gets you killed by good players. Even that mixed style only really works because the idea is to not give your opponent so many chances to remember how easy it is to beat Abel’s options.
At the end of the day, I think Abel sucks, so I don’t think there actually is a right answer here, just various degrees of wrong.
i FEEL you man… abel to be honest is a shit character hah. it is really hard to win and what you said i totally agree. theres many reasons why abel isnt good and i love talking about how much abel sucks haha
How in the world do some of you guys get a hold of Shiro videos?
I’ve been trying the figure out how to, but searching for him yields almost no success.
I found out he was ranked #7 in the JPN rankings, and I went apeshit trying to look for more videos.
Maybe… anyone have the Kanji for his name?
Eventually I’ll get videos of my Abel up, so you can all make me feel bad about how many f.mk~s.HP’s I go for and / or miss when its not clutch.
I apparently only hit them when they are absolutely necessary.
