Abel Beginner Thread: "It takes more than brute strength..."

Dont know if anyone as mentioned this here but has anyone taken a look at the VesperArcade tutorials for ssf4? Its not Abel specific but it goes into GREAT detail about everything in the game and would be very useful for those who are just starting out.

just skip to CH 5 and it starts really getting into the actual gameplay

Question, is the timing for cr.fp juggle to U1 character dependent??

And is it possible to land if the OPP is near the corner?

1st question: some people argue theres a slight difference between the big/small characters, though i think most agree that the time is the same for all except that against big chars you can afford to do it a little bit late and still hit.

2nd: yes, check the FAQ thread. basically against some characters its impossible without using cod fadc before hitting the ultra.

ultra juggles… there is a certain timing that works for everyone. some characters are more lenient and have a bigger window for you to do your ultra in. only character I find really hard to hit with U1 midscreen is Vega… I swear the window to hit him is much smaller than it is for everyone else

thats why you pick U2 for that matchup lol

but yeah, i use U2 against claw

So safe bet that if i practice vs Vega I’m golden vs all the cast. cool.

I usually pick U1 vs. him but lately I’ve been thinking U2 is the way to go

if nothing else U2 is fast enough you can use it to OS against his back dash.

I don’t find it hard to tag Vega midscreen.

But yeah… there’s a certain timing that works on everyone, and some characters give more time than that universal window.

I use U1 on Vega, but U2 has uses. OS’ing Vega’s wake-up with Breathless is pretty fucking cheap. Vega can’t do shit but block.

I use Breathless on Vega to react to Cosmic Heel and OS stuff. Man, fuck Cosmic Heel.

I’m attempting to make a jump over to Abel as second character (want someone a bit ‘tournament viable’ than T Hawk alone). My issue isn’t getting inside and setting up pressure. Its what to do after that like Hawk, my instinct is to command grab…a lot. I’m trying to learn the Abel combos, but until then, should I just keep throwing around my opponent, or is there some better tactic to work on?

take your time exploring the abel forums, read the stickied threads (you wanna learn combos? theres a thread for that. etc)… watch a few match videos and what not…

know what abel can do, his moves etc. go to training mode to practice and play real matches against people and work from there.

just a buncha generic tips for a generic question…

I have a question about EX FS as a AA.

I hear in passing that its a good AA tool now, but I don’t really see many Abels use it a whole lot.

So question is it situational/character jumpin dependent? What made it fail as an AA in sf4 but be advertised for an AA in super?

Any version of Falling Sky can work as an anti-air now, if you know how the hitbox works. It got buffed a lot so that the grab box is way bigger than it used to be - before, it used to have a vulnerable box on Abel’s arm that was bigger than the grab box so it was practically impossible to use it for anything because it would always get stuffed, or trade at best.

Now the vulnerable box is almost entirely gone on his arm so if you do FS with the proper timing, you will be able to grab the other guy almost 100% of the time depending on who you are trying to grab. It is matchup specific to a large degree… I only use falling sky vs characters who are otherwise difficult to anti-air like Honda, Dictator and Vega. you want their vulnerable box to fall into FS’s active hitbox… so using the strong version is your best bet because it has the best balance between startup frames vs active ones. Fierce has more active frames but is also slower to start so you need pretty sick reactions to pull it off imo. In general, you need to falling sky really early which is what makes it difficult. imo you need to do it as the other guy reaches the peak of his jump, or just after.

If you EX, you get a few frames of invincibility so if you did your FS too late you still have a chance of grabbing the other guy. This is the one you stand a better chance of grabbing Dic j.fp, Sakura j.rh, Vega j.fp, and Boxer jump ins with. But it can still trade (juggle into another EX FS or ultra 1).

Falling Sky in general is good vs dive kicks too. It absolutely destroys Seth’s dive kick and is important to know in that matchup. It does okay vs Rufus dive kick and is not that useful vs Cammy. If you’ve seen the hitbox pic of Yun’s dive kick… falling sky will eat that move alive.

Hard move to explain tho… you gotta experiment with it.

I just picked up Abel and I love how he plays. Last night on PSN I went through some Shoto Gauntlet trying to push over 2000bp in ranking. It seems though in the other threads for looking for other Abel players that they aren’t very active. If any Abel players on PSN wanna train sometime, I still would like to learn more from experienced players. Thanks!

Too bad I’m PSN, one question guys when I jump in should I jump with mk? I got a lot of dps since the block stun isn’t high and can’t connect to a link a lp or lk after the jump mk is blocked.

It really just depends. A clever player won’t mash out a DP because its so easily beaten by just blocking after a j mk but if you’re getting hit by both mashers and good players, you might be playing just a tad too predictable. I had this issue myself and I’ve developed a feeling for when I should bait and when I should attack depending on the risk/reward. The deeper your j mk, the more chance of it being a true blockstring when you followup as you land but if you feel like its not worth it (you might have eaten a couple of DPs already) why don’t you do something like an OS tech as you land to cover your bases or even just blocking/ex rolling/backdashing depending on what kind of reversal your opponent has to put yourself in a good position for when you attack.

I play on PSN. I just don’t see the point in playing Abel mirrors. They suck, and they don’t teach you much about using Abel.

Thanks for the advice Ill try that well to be honest I got DP all the time by mashers because I have the habit after I jump to do a blockstring and pressure with jabs and then keep the pressure going. I guess I have to change and try to adapt Ill try that man thanks

Hey I’m a Gen player just looking to pick up a new char, always liked abel and his potential pressure game. Wondered if anyone could possibly spar with me and give me some experience of what a good abel can do? I’m gonna spend a lot of time in the training room but I’d really appreciate some tips and tricks if anyone is willing to share

I tried using him last night but C.hp seemed to always trade as an AA and i wasn’t always fast enough to FS, any advice?

c.mk

learn to love it
