Abel Beginner Thread: "It takes more than brute strength..."

I wont be online for awhile and I will be in training mode going over drills with my new TE stick and I was wondering with Abel being my main is there any drills that I can do with him that can help my execution of his moves.
Not match up ideas but ways to perform my 1 frame links in training mode. I have started doing his 24 trails again and if I’m not in there I was wondering is there any situational things I need to go over while using a stick.

Just work on your plinking man, that’s the best way to do it.
I think it’s trial 22 and 24 incorporate the BnB abel 1-framer, the Forward Forward to St. Fierce.

Just make sure you keep the input data on so you can recognize when the plink is working :o

Plinking or double tapping I use my index and middle finger to execute moves so plinking isn’t double tapping to execute links. so if I wanted to do the step kick I would plink to get the st hp or double tap the st Hp? my question is what is better to do with able plinking or double tapping

Learn to plink the link between f+mk and s.hp.

If you’re in training mode, the plink should look like this:
:mp::hp:
:hp:

There’s a section in the second or third post about plinking.

So plinking is better than double tapping? I thought they were essentially doing the same thing as far as adding extra frames to your moves. I find it easier to link f mk into cr lk more than the f-mk st hp so far my execution is on point no messing up my combos like I did on pad so well double tapping is what I do in the arcade but I hear plinking is better but I havent grasped the concept of when to do it and when not to

Double tapping isn’t that effective in this game, imo. I tried it while first learning the combo, and it didn’t come out nearly as effective.

Layman’s terms for plinking forward forward >> St. HP:

Raise your finger that would press medium punch slightly above the finger you use for pressing hard punch, and then press both buttons. Best way to practice this is in training mode, like Dustlooper said. You’ll see that combination come out and you’ll know you did it correctly.

Practice the shit out of the 1 frame. Practice his FADC combos from corner to corner, without stopping to cr.fp. Just do a mix of crouching/standing mp/fp to cod and keep FADCing.

okay cool Abel is better on stick than pad cuz I see me landing the step kick into dash cancel better without double dashing and plinking is easy but my timing is off so I’am happy with that and I guess double tapping isnt for Abel I do it in the Arcade for 3’s and negative edge. SO I guess I’am on my way to start adding my own flavor to Abel which is why I play him Thanks guys

Hey, I don’t know if this has been mentioned already or not, but you can actually FADC out of change of direction on the second hit if you do second low. There’s not really much point in doing it unless it’s blocked, but if it is, it’s a great opportunity to get a fierce tornado throw landed, or to backdash and escape if that’s your preference.

Oh, I don’t know if this was mentioned or not either, but you can actually get thrown out of Breathless from an opponent’s command grab, sort of like how you can throw Akuma when he does raging demon ultra.

Anyone who bothered to look/learn the move properties should already know what moves can be fadced or not, sometimes the reason you dont see it written is probably because its pretty much useless. Second low is so slow that youll only land it or have it blocked because youre extremely lucky or playing a shitty opponent (might work in certain rare situations against specific characters, but i dont know much about that lol).

As for grabbing out of breathless, ive posted a video a long time ago where I got thrown by a gouken, but Im not sure if anyone was able to simulate the same situation again in training mode so i guess the timing gotta be strict and it might be too risky to escape that way compared to other better ways you can counter it.

Thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks to Dustlooper for making this great thread, it has helped my Abel game a lot. I believe I got the basic 5 hit combos down (whatever - whatever - CoD) but I still got to work on my pressure game with fw.mk dash s.hp. It just feels so weird to dash after an attack to get a combo going but I guess practice, practice, practice is the only way to go.

I’ve read the Match-up thread about the Fei Long matchup but I didnt really feel like it helped me understand how to deal with his great pressure game. Any of you guys got some good advice on how to handle Fei’s fury?
(If this is considered off topic i guess i can post the question in the matchup thread)

i suggest you check out the abel match theory thread(its basically a matchup thread too) for info on how to deal with feilong.

Thanks, will put it in my to read list.

NP, bro. I’m on-the-side-rewriting this. I think I’m going through a character crisis with Chun after that tournament. But, I’ll probably keep working on this.

I use Abel, but any help with him would be great. This thread has helped me a little, but I think I need to learn the anti-air hits better. Would anyone know where I can go to learn?

Training mode.

This.

As far as AAs go, I use cr.hp, cr.mk, far mk, far mp, and EX FS (roughly in order of priority).

i have a question does anybody know abel counter hit setups for players who like to like crouch tech and mash etc…

i also want to add thanks to dustlooper and all the players that contribute to this thread

You can use cr.lp > cr.mp to fish for counter hits. If the cr.mp is blocked, you will still stuff everything excluding invincible reversals. CH cr.mp can cancel into fierce CoD. If you can land a CH f+mk, you can link it into a cr.hp (1 frame link).
