The lighting effects draw your eyes to the prominent crotch, even though your are wandering WTF is going on. Nice use of colour blending, as well as differentation between BG patterns. Good, complete piece.

" THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE." </highlander> This one pretty much devestated the competition. Good usage of theme, effective sprite edits, and the anchor “kanji” at the end sealed the deal. A-

Okay so it’s a one-trick-joke, but it’s pulled off well, looks like the sprtie was designed for this very purpose. Could use some more action to distract the eye, but is decent enough.

Even tho’ i’ll confess to not “getting” the theme, the retro feel works quite effectively. Clean and straight-forward. Sometimes less is more.

Honourable mention to OC’s and robotron’s entries. You guys were choices for 2nd and 3rd, definately.

Now about the “drama”, it is kinda unfair when ppl work within the constraints, and then others come in with bigger file/image sizes. It could be argued that those who obeyed the rules could have produced better results if they had more size to work with. Just placeing the av’s up and saying “oh some are bigger than allowed” isn’t on. In this case, rules are made not to be broken.

Slide: I don’t think you messed it up, and I understand your concern (and AW’s, and DD’s etc.) Really, i value your opinion and would love to have you participating in these ABC’s in some fashion or another. While the drama wasn’t my favorite thing, your judging was very good and your comments were appreciated. I’d love to have you keep judging as long as you’re unable/unwilling to make entries 9which, of course, I’d prefer)

The thing is, I was kinda in a fucked situation when I realized at 11 pm the night before that some of the entries were oversize, and since there was no time to get them back to the artists to fix them, and, as a rule, I don’t edit other people’s work without their permission, I went with the best alternative I had. I’m certainly going to check filesize and canvas size of avatars as they come in from now on.

The Rest of You: Anyway, I don’t think the ABC was ruined, and I most certainly DO want feedback. I just think it might be a better scheme to watch how each ABC turns out, and after it’s complete, then post some feedback (preferrably in the ABC feedback thread --wherever that went. I’ll try to find it and sticky it for future use.) I’m most interested in comparing what works/what doesn’t work. Clearly, including slightly illegal entries doesn’t really work, as too many people regard it as an unfair practice.

If you guys want to put together some comments on what worked/didn’t work about this particular ABC, and/or about past ones, I’d love it. Suggestions for future ABC’s is also more than welcome. Each ABC has had something new in it, and I will continue to try new things out with each one until I get a system that’s really really good. This ABC had some new stuff that worked (multiple themes, strong advertising, some good judges) as well as some new stuff that didn’t work (illegal entries, Mr_Punkus and Mystic_Bash).

I’m also very interested in which judges you think are good ones and which are bad. I’d like to put together a permanent judge panel, but that’s hard as A) There aren’t many people who come to IMM that I’d want to judge that don’t make avatars themselves, and I don’t want to keep someone from ever entering because they’re a judge. and B) Getting people from outside IMM often leads to people who don’t know how to judge well. personally, I think Irennicus and Ender120 did pretty good jobs at judging, and am considering asking them to hang around, since neither makes avatars (well, aside from this fun mspaint trend that’s going around), but I’m curious as to what others thought of their judging.

You know, this is perhaps one of the most ironic things that have ever happened since I’ve been in Mishmash; not that I’m saying anything negative. It’s merely that I did use the Metal Slug 2 Desert background and I went out of my way to try to not make it look like they were floating by enlarging the background twice. I didn’t bother trying to sharp it since everything looks weird when I sharpen it, which is why I had to replace all the sprites in the foreground after I finally decided where the hell they were going to be placed.

Other than that, it turned out (marginally) better than I thought that it would, but that’s not saying much. Thanks for the review; I just wanted to point out the irony obviously.

(Oh, and obviously quiche picked the name since I don’t like this “fuckachunkz” thing.)

Slide: Actually, my post wasn’t really directed you. In fact, I agreed with what you were doing because of my above problems with “fuckachunkz”. I think you’re one of the better judges, but I suppose that I should speak of this in the feedback thread…

Speaking of judging, I wouldn’t mind judging again quiche since I suck as an artist even when I do try. I suppose this should go in the feedback thread too.

I’m not trying to make any enemies here. I’m really, sincerely, trying not to be a dick. So please, please don’t single me out like that because I had problems with the way that the comp was run.

Also, I stand by what I originally said:

I think this should be very strongly discouraged in all future competitions. I’ll be happy to elaborate why if you’d like, otherwise let’s just leave it at that.

And, in regards to having them “pulled from the competition”?:

So, please, c’mon. I’m not trying to upset anyone. I’ve said multiple times how much I enjoy and appreciate these avatar battles. The main reason I entered was to get to know people a little bit better. But the way that the competition was run was bogus, from the get-go, and I think it’s totally unfair for someone like you (Quiche) to justify it by saying that you “give out/give away the prizes” and to dismiss everyone’s concerns as “bitching.”

Honestly - it seems like no one is in it for the prizes. You could offer no prizes next month, and I’m guessing you would get the same turnout. But if people are going to take hours out of their lives to make entries for this thing, it should be judged and run properly. It should be a completely fair and level playing field for everyone, from the get-go.

All of that said, I just want to make something clear. Quiche, OC, I really don’t want you to feel any ill will towards me just because of this ABC. I think you’re hilarious, you’re both very talented, I appreciate your posts and efforts to keep the community engaged, and I hope you keep it up. I know you’ve both been around a long time. I’m sorry if my posts/comments were a bit out of order for a newcomer.

I have played NGBC…for a few weeks before I realized it was garbage.
When I said Wtf is she doing with sentinel, I didn’t mean it as a negative thing. The only thing that bothered me was the bkg. You make such nice bkgs in your regular avs but this one didn’t look right.

Heres my thought on all of this.

Slide, I thought you made really good decisions as a judge and I respect youre opinion about whether those avs should have been allowed. The only thing I didn’t respect, was the fact that everyone started complaining before the judging had been completed. If you believe it will make the ABC’s better, thats good, but this one had already started. I thought you could have just voiced youre opinion and reasoning for youre judging, and then let it go untill after the rest of the judging was over. But honestly, that doesent upset me. I still have mad respect for you, and I hope you continue to support the ABC’s with youre avs/judging.

Master chibi, what you said was just disrespectful =/. First of all, The theme fuckachunkz is not a bad theme. The whole point was to make an av that sounded rediculas and turn it into a good av. Also, it could just relate to fuckachunkz and not necessarily be fuckachunkz. But regardless, even if it was a horrible theme, and was the only theme… when have we ever done the same theme over again? Also, you say a month wasent *worth *the wait? I’m sorry, did you pay for this or something? -_-

Dunno about the next ABC yet, ROBO. Kinda burned out right now. I’ll prolly announce it in a few days, it it’ll be 2 weeks instead of a month this time.

Tenka is wonderful. I seriously think is SNKP knew what they were doing they’d bring this to the states ASAP, cause this is the first SNKP game I’ve played that I could actually see being played at Evo. It’s that good.

Right now I’m playing Ten-Galford and Do-Wan-Fu.

If I ordered it, I would need a modded PS2 to play it, yeah? I really want to get on that game but I have no idea how to go about being able to play it.

Yeah, you’d need to mod your ps2. I just modded mine after christmas.

I got the DMS4 EZI solderless mod chip which wasn’t TOO bad to install. It’s great because my games all boot straight up with no swapping.

If you don’t mind swapping a boot disk every time you load up the game, there are cheaper/easier alternatives.

Tenka is worth it though, and I’ll also be able to import GGXXSlash as soon as it hits ps2. Wheeeeeeee!

Noone but a handful of people understood where fuckachunkz came from, it’s just an inside joke constantly thrown around by OC and quiche. It’s a joke, it’s not meant to be taken seriously, which is why it didn’t belong in a serious contest for prizes. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be doing silly stuff, but there really isn’t any foundation for ‘fuckachunkz’ and the literal fact that we have to have a discussion like this one on it just makes me roll my eyes up and over anyway.

As for it not being worth the wait, it wasn’t. The turnout (and quality of the avatars) should have been at least double what it is here. I was just as excited as quiche is, even though I said a month was too long of a wait to begin with. Turns out we got the same shit we would have had in a weekly battle.
