I know Im a couple days late, but I wanted to share my thoughts on a few entries as well as the ones I put in.
Taunt: Very funny and artistically well done. As I tend to stick with sprites and screen caps, the original work is impressive. You really captured Dans emotion. The source material for his face just made it that much more hilarious.
Saikyo Tengu: Creative concept and it works. I admit that I didnt notice Akumas reaction until others pointed it out, but once I saw it, it really added that extra touch. Maybe keep his facial expression for an extra frame? But its both bad-ass and funny.
Yogadouken: I see what you did there. Like others have pointed out, the rubber effect on Dans arm is well crafted. Subtle effects like that really add to good work. Your idea also makes sense: how else will a gadouken ever hit anyone? So many levels!
How Worthless: My original entry was similar: it used animation as a secondary element to accentuate the main message. I like this style.
And heres what I did for my entries in case you were curious about them.
SFIV Tier List: I had this as my animated entry until I knew Id be able to do the other. Its true that Sagat towers over Dan and perhaps steals focus. But Sagat’s sprite is that damn big. At first I had them on equal footing, but I had to move Dan up quite a bit to fit him in the frame. In my current avatar, Ive also made Sagats hand holding the list look more natural. For whatever reason I didnt even think about it before, so I appreciate that criticism. Finally, originally I had no background but I decided to make it less plain and ground it in SFIV by using the overpass stage.
SGS Escape: My costume choices were dictated mainly by what was in the few high-quality videos Id gathered. I wanted to use Dans alt to complement Akuma, but theres something to be said for his original (and I couldnt find a video with high enough res). I know the gradient is choppy, but it was a necessary evil. I wanted a dark color on the bottom to minimize any illusion of Dan floating in air, but I needed a lighter color to contrast with his ponytail. Also, I had fucked around with adding some scrolling distant background (kind of like the skyline in Mike Tysons Punch Out) but I just couldnt get it to look right.
Finally, I want to recognize and thank the judges again, WARNA BROTHER for generously supplying the premium, and most of all quiche for runnin shit.
