A series of questions

Wow, this works? I’d figure Akuma would be too far away to instagrab like Karademon or Gigas.

tbh I don’t know. I think if its like right outside close rh range for akuma it works. I’ve only done it once in a match and I think the person pressed a button before activation, but who wouldn’t press a button there? hahaha

…true. Lousy reactive counterpoking… ;(

This is also one of the reasons why I sometimes think Akuma is worse than Makoto in terms of Q matchups.

woops I misspoke. I read far standing rounhouse, but I was thinking of far standing fierce in my head  I agree that sf4 akuma’s far standing roundhouse is definitely better.

far standing fierce is a great poke on the ground from far distance, but far standing roundhouse must be used differently. I usually only use it as an anti-air but even that can be unsafe because the recovery is so bad, which leads to big punishment. It has its uses but it’s a pretty risky normal to try and incorporate into your game.

Everytime I want to find a reason to give Akuma a definite advantage against characters such as Q, Akuma damage syndrome keeps coming to mind

Just in case you want as much input as possible, I will also add my opinion on these questions. I’ve been playing 3s a little over a year and I have mained Oro pretty much the whole time, while messing around a little bit on other characters for maybe a couple months’ worth of play. Most of my experience is on arcade, some PS2, and very recent stints on GGPO.

  1. SSFIV - 3s?
Seems like some basics likes footsies carry over. You’ll also know what kind of stuff is bad like random DPs and don’t jump too much.
  2. Tiers?
Don’t matter. Every character has won a meaningful tournament in Japan, except Sean, I think. So, play who you like. I’m glad you like Oro
  3. Gouki?
He has similar BnBs. Same weaknesses (low hp, stun), similar strengths (air options, relatively quick.) I guess you’ll have to get used to not having EX moves, but it isn’t as much of a hinderence as you think. At one time, yeah, you don’t get magic shiny moves, but on the other hand, you won’t waste your meter doing dumb stuff as you’re learning the game (fucking wake up EX dp Kens!)
  4. GGPO?
I’ve only started using GGPO recently, but I do know people who play on there. I’ve never had trouble finding a match. But, the quality of connections is not great most of the time, and the players are worse than the mashers on SSFIV Xbl. Honestly, I think learning to play through Arcade mode (including Gill) is more vital than GGPO to start with. GGPO is better than nothing though.

Hope I helped! Have fun playing the best fighting game in existence!

Tbh, I tend to think it’s better at stuffing jumps early, like kens standing mk or standing mp. It’s startup is a bit slow for anti air really (and of course it can be parried anyway).

That’s definitely a safer way to use it, but if I’m that close to my opponent and I can react quickly enough that I can stuff an early jump then most of the time I’d rather jump and do an early forward or roundhouse… then I’d be able to land early and super while my opponent’s being reset.

I’ve found that if you time it as an anti-air really early (like the soonest that you can hit your opponent in the air, usually at or before the top height of the jump arc) it works pretty well and doesn’t really get parried because nobody ever tries to parry that early when jumping in. I think it works pretty well as an anti-air as long as you’re precise, mix up often and don’t get too predictable about how you use it.

womble are you a system shock fan?

on the tier discussion in general: just don’t worry about it. unless you’re playing for money and really need to have the safest options available to you just use someone you think is fun to use (like you said with gouki/akuma). some matchups are rough (i’ve heard oro vs chun is pretty crazt) certainly but that’s part of having a relatively diverse/unique cast. you’ll dig it once you play more.

Wow bullmic, finally someone new in 3S WITHOUT an angry attitude

Don’t listen to some of these trolls, 3S is not hard to play, many of SF4’s mechanics were borrowed from 3S

The only real thing you can do is PLAY THE GAME! It’s similar in many aspects though not in all… also yeah don’t worry about tiers it’s fancy talk at your early stage, if you can get the pace of the game right and start to implement parrys, perhaps then look into it. If you need an idea of how competitive 3S is played, check out this The Shend’s youtube channel YouTube - TheShend’s Channel it’s updated very frequently.

And of course, DON’T GIVE UP!! Also don’t jump onto GGPO too early… there are a ton of trolls there and mid-players. Play ken and practice basic stuff, strong-fierce shoryu, shortshort super, etc. Ken is well rounded in every area, plus easy to play, fun and strong. Worst scenario, you challenge a good urien, denjin ryu or yun and you get discouraged

Way more posts than I expected, I honestly didn’t expect Third Strike to still be this popular. Thanks for answering my questions in great detail guys.

I have another question, I don’t feel it deserves its own thread because I already created this, and it is pretty basic…

Can I still use shoryuken after LK Tatsu with Akuma? I realise you can’t mash shoryuken in 3S so i’ve been inputting the proper command, but I’m finding that my opponent will hit the ground before the shoryuken comes out. The one time i’ve managed to do it was when my LK tatsu was juggling the character for some reason. I think they may have jumped into it or something, I can’t really remember.

When you say the quality of connection is not great, would you say its better or worse than SSFIVs online? I’d heard great things about GGPO and how people wished MVC3 would use it officially. So for you to say this, it came as a suprise.

  • Shoryu is Akuma’s easiest followup after LK Tatsu in 3rd Strike. You’re just inputting the Shoryu too late; try doing it a little earlier.

  • It’s online, so generally the connection’s gonna have hiccups. There is a reason why there are quite a few anti-GGPO 3S players: lag not only affects the player online, but it will also affect them offline by screwing up their timing. It’s still so far the only good way to get some decent online 3S games though, and it’s definitely better than XBox Live ever was.

GGPO is great, just not for 3s as it doesn’t have all of the actual CPS3 source codes for the game.

Is it playable though? Yep, more so in good ping. (duh :D)

GGPO is sloppy but the options are limited so everyone plays on it.

GGPO is fine just stick to pings under 60. You should play offline equally though. If you have friends to play with get them interested.

You should try nebula/cps3emu. play on even a good connection on ggpo and then play on that offline. You’ll notice how ‘smooth’ everything is and how much time you feel like you have to react. GGPO drops frames amongst I assume other things to make the experience work. The downside is obviously when you drop those frames some things become pretty difficult to react to. Regardless that doesn’t stop you from learning how to play offline and applying that stuff to online play instead of learning bad online only habits.

Make sure you mix it up with more than ggpo. Otherwise if you do decide to meet up and play people in person you’ll be in trouble when you realize how easy some things are to parry/react to offline compared to online.

That and Thief yeah. Those games never get old.

That and Thief yeah. Those games never get old.

Is there anyway to stick this game in some form of training mode where I can just beat up a dummy? I’m having to make do wtih using 2player mode, which is pretty annoying because of the health+timer.

Thief is cool, I never played Thief 2.

Also, just look up ‘cheats for mame’ then load up mame with cheats on and viola, training mode.

Well I was using CPS3 emulator, and It’s been brought to my attention that you need to use MAME for netplay and as far as I can tell you can’t use cheats on the CPS3 emulator.

So i’ve attempted to get third strike working on Mame but no no avail.

I’ve downloaded the 3rd strike rom, the chd and the bin file. Extracted the roms components and then zipped them again along with the chd and bin file, and given the rar file the correct name, yet mame refuses to recognise the rom.

The directories are correct and I can’t think what could be causing this, any ideas?
