A series of questions

I have quite a few questions and considering I have so many I felt it justified a thread. The general Third Strike forum no longer accepts new posts, so I apologise but I had to post here.

[]How transferable is skill from SSFIV to Third Strike?
[
]Are mid tier characters like Oro viable against the top tier characters like Ken and Chun Li? (Basically is it anywhere near as balanced as SSFIV)
[]Does Akuma play much like his SSFIV counterpart?
[
]And finally, is the GPO (I think thats the name) online community large?

I appreciate any help.

1: No. Fucking. Way. Took everything you learned from SF4 and throw it away. Don’t even think about mashing Super on wakeup or random specials.

2: Depends on the work you want to put in. I love using Alex and I can do pretty well against most Chuns. It’s all about the work you want to put in.

3: Basically yeah, but you don’t play him like a keep away character in 3S. His strength is his Dive Kick mixup, and the combo-ability of his Tatsu.

4: GGPO. And yeah there’s a lot of people, but in my experience 99% of them are scrubs who’ve played SF4.

Sounds like it won’t be too difficult to get into then lol. I think i’m going to start playing in preparation for the re-release, I’m just kinda conflicted on whether to pick Akuma, who is my main in SSFIV plus I hear he’s pretty good for competative play or Oro who I have absolutely no experience with and isn’t considered too great, yet I really like the character…

Hmm decisions, decisions.

Am I right to assume that Mame is the emulator of choice for this, or what?

Ugh, mashing on wakeup is a bad habit. It’s not a skill someone would pick up from SF4.

I’d say skill in SF4 is transferable, you just need to understand some of the nuances about the game that make certain options more powerful and certain options less powerful in comparison to SF4.

I’d say the first several pages have some useful information. Browse through that and see if you have any other questions.

Gouki is a bit different than his SF4 adaption. His demon flip isn’t quite as good, and just the game in general doesn’t allow for as strong of an okizeme game in your typical game (although when you are able to get untechable knockdowns, he has some incredibly strong 50/50’s against certain characters that lead to huge damage). I could ramble all day about their differences…

I like Oro too, but in all honesty hes really just outside the realm of competitive characters. Oro was one of my first characters, and from experience, Gouki is way more fun and a stronger character.

Footsies I guess are applicable to all games, even so. Footsies in 3rd Strike are not the same as SF4.

I’ll disagree with Pherai. Oro is definitely viable but he is a difficult character to play. The only matchup that you can’t play well enough or learn enough to make it 6-4 or 5-5 is vs Chun Li. I would say play ANY character in the game but Twelve and Sean. Sean is a joke character, and Twelve needs a lot of work. I mean a shit load. More than you have time for to play him at a competitive level. Oro is fucking boss.

No, Akuma is much much different.

The community is pretty big. It’s cool, it’s not Arcade but if it’s all you have then embrace it. Good players do log on like Nica KO and you can play him and see if you’ve progressed.

The only disappointing thing about Oro is that his one really really bad matchup just so happens to be Chun(I’d say 8-2 bad). Other than that, he’s a great and complex character who can do good against the rest of the cast. I’d say all the characters except Twelve and Sean stand a chance against top-tier, and even then Twelve has a better chance against Chun than even some of the mid-tier characters. It’s just very hard and you’re going to WANT to practice those hard matchups.

As a beginner player, don’t even worry about tiers and strengths of each character. Just play who you want to play.

  1. None the same juggles wont work. Physics are different. Time to start over.
  2. Any character is playable to be deadly. It takes time and patience. But of course, some characters are easier to win with than others.
  3. Kind of.
  4. Usually theres about 100 people online. They usually just talk smack to each other and talk about asian women, but there harmless.

Whatever basics you learned from playing SF4 transfer it to 3S and apply to it to the 3rd strike engine. The universal basics that are in SF4 are in 3S also.

And as Ryan stated dont worry about tiers just play the characer you love and welcome to STRIKE!!!

I’ve managed to get Third Strike up and running and after playing Oro and Akumas Third Strike incarnation, I actually find Akuma to be more fun anyway (mainly because of his speed). So it would make sense for me to stick with him for numerous reasons.

I was quite pleased to see most of my combos still work lol, although i’m definitely missing the far standing roundhouse.

How essential is parrying in this game? If its worth it, i’d be willing to grind out some mindless parry training for a few days straight lol.

Parry is like 95% prediction, 5% execution. Parry training will help a little but you’ll parry a lot more meaty moves or anti airs then you will supers or flashy things like that.

Oro is fun as hell to use. At the competitive level though, the key to being successful with him is to get those supers ready (more so than other characters). Against top-tiered characters, you gotta put in some big work if you don’t have super stocked up. Once you get it though, your work load decreases a considerable amount and you can put a SERIOUS hurting on anyone if you find an opening.

Parry is important but there’s no way to mindlessly grind out parrying. It’s something you’ll slowly incoporate as you get more comfortable in the system. You shouldn’t worry about it too much at first except to try and parry hadoukens and obvious things you have plenty of time to react to.

And yes, abilities in sf4 translate, just not everything because they’re different systems. Being intelligent, understanding timing and spacing, having clean and consistent execution, etc. transfer to any fighting game.

Emu of choice. For online ggpo uses fba which is better than mame for 3S but not the best. cps3emu is the best for offline afaik.

Hey BulimicCannibal, nice that you picked 3S up. There are some cool 3S players in Birmingham that you should try to get some training from when they have local sessions: NGUboy, Rudi, Rakurai, HaoTwo, etc… those 4 guys also play on GGPO a fair bit, get in touch with them and ask them for some sessions!

The Birmingham scene tends to focus around the Electronic Dojo site and various parts of the Neo Empire site - sign up to the forums on both sites and introduce yourself!

If you’re ever in the South-West or South Wales, get in touch because we also have an expanding 3S scene and have loads of laughs.

i wish more players had the same attitude as this guy (BulimicCannibal)

eww why is your name bullimic cannibal?

Hmmm, how so? I think 3s Akuma’s far standing roundhouse is much better than sf4 Akuma’s far standing roundhouse. I love using that thing as a far range poke; usually people don’t see it coming and it feels so awesome when it hits (lots of stun and lots of damage for one hit).

Either way I’d say stick with Akuma. He’s sick pretty much no matter what style you use. You can be good with Oro to the point where you can compete with all the top tiers like chun, yun ken and makoto, but it’ll just take a lot of practice and studying to get to that point. It’ll be much easier to get to that point with shotos because they are very fundamental, well-rounded characters.

Sf4 standing heavy kick is definitely better. 3s one is too slow really, and ultimately inferior to ryu’s st hk. Though, it has it’s uses and vs some of the bigger characters it’s very nice.

3s gouki s.rh is a cool kara demon trick

pro gouki option select from the PHERAI BEERU GOUKI labs -

do far standing rh against opponent

if they duck and it whiffs -> cancel to RD
if it hits -> cancel to RD
