A Litany of Hate: In Defense of the FGC

Yes, I do .

But it still feels like a cop-out .

Huh, Evo is pulling away the Evo points from Level Up? Wow

Wow, the Illuminati just went in. Pulling all WNF seed points?

I have been watching this entire trainwreck and I cannot look away.

It’s so, so entertaining.

I’m glad Cross Assault exists, not because I watched it, but because of all of this unfolding is more entertaining than any manufactured hype a reality show could actually generate.

This thread is delicious!

Again, they know that this shit is bad for the scene and bad for business.

It’ll be fun to watch the cognitive dissonance as people need to either disagree with the Cannons or admit that it’s a serious problem. They can’t have both!

Marn ruins every community he is a part of.

GGs Marn!

Pulling the Seed points is the single most retarded fucking thing, and sends a giant FU to people who earned these points and had shit to do wiht this whole situation. This reeks of SRK trying to plactae these lame game journalist going in on shit they know nothing about.

Really?

That’s just sad.

Heckuva Job, FGC

Marn is still awesome, shush. (edit: and his apology was great. No excuses, just ‘I misread the situation and went overboard, I was wrong’. Have to respect that)

They want the scene to be taken seriously, and this is part of what they have to do to meet that goal.

Wow. Everything I stated earlier in this post I expected to happen in years times happened in hours. Good fucking game. GAME OVER! PRESS R TO RETRY LOL YOU DIED LOL LOL YOU DIED

Does this mean no more nigga specials? ;_;

Inkblot’s response blew my mind. Initially, I thought pulling the seeding points was over the top, but I quickly realized the potency of the message such an action brings - it’s time for this community to grow-the-fuck-up and start thinking responsibly. Not just about topical sexual harassment issues, but about its own future in relation to its growing popularity. The insular, awkward, backwards biases this community espouses time and time again in regards to other communities of people needs to stop. Or its going nowhere. Sadly, there’s people that would like to see that. Those are the people that need to be washed away in the tides of change in order for us to continue to grow.

Before now, I was never sure about some of the community’s more authoritative minds, such as Ink, having any positive influence in regards to its culture because I assumed they were too wholly indoctrinated in the 90’s SF2 arcade mentality. Maybe there’s hope, yet.

I was asked to chime in on this by a close female friend. So I did. Twice. And I’ll copy-pasta my two responses because it’s what I’d say in response to this thread.

Aris is Aris. Deal with him how you would deal with any other horribly offensive individual. He’s a misogynistic nerd before he’s a part of the competitive fighting game scene. The same day this shitstorm happened, I was at a tournament in Cedar Rapids with one female entrant. Everyone there treats her as she is: one of us. No one says anything horrible to her and no one’s said anything horrible about her while she’s not there, at least to my knowledge. (My favorite thing about her? She picks her characters based on how hot they are, i.e. Dante and Vergil in UMVC3, and admits it straight up. Screw your stereotypes, SHE WANTS SEXY HOT MEN IN HER GAMES. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Ironically enough, Justin Wong, one of the scene’s most known and celebrated players, is also one of the nicer guys you could meet among the top players in the FGC. He’s also sponsored, and heavily at that. Funny how that works.

The real issue here isn’t one moron’s antics. It’s that no one did anything about the moron’s antics until how many days into a Capcom-sponsored event. The issue here isn’t Aris being Aris. It’s that Aris was allowed to be Aris for longer than the first sentence he spouted out about Miranda on stream. I’m disgusted at his actions here, but even just as much at everyone in charge for thinking this was acceptable. For five days. What the hell? o_O

Essentially, the FGC has this mentality that they are underground. That, because their beginnings involve one-on-one in-person encounters of pride and quarters in arcades, they are above all these “eSports” events they deem too sterile and impersonal. In a small way, I agree with them. There is something more to playing someone in an arcade or in person at an event than there is in hopping online or (in the case of Starcraft tourneys) sitting at your own computer while your opponent isn’t right next to you.

Right there, though, the difference ends and the FGC’s arrogance begins. Many top players and even many of the higher-up organizers think that there’s no place for eSports in the FGC. They think that, once fighting games go “mainstream” and sponsors start getting involved, they’ll have to give up all the hype and insanity that goes with it. These are people that barely break even if they get top 3 in a tournament they travel to (if they break even at all), shout slurs and bet large amounts of money on-stream, and THAT’S what they don’t want to give up. They see MLG events where players are pretty much supplied with free food/drink and winners make enough to put a down payment on a house and have the gall to think “that’s not hype enough” because the announcer isn’t dropping four-letter words every five minutes and has a goddamned tie on. They see these Starcraft events and wonder why the winner doesn’t start yelling “FUCK YEAH! FUCK YEAH!” on the (very-sponsored) camera at the opponent after a match…you know, like they do. Instead, they’d rather have Yipes start yelling “FUCK THAT PUSSY” when a player using Felicia is getting beat. Yes, it happened at a streamed tournament. And yes, everyone was somehow okay with it.

Now, I have no problems with people doing random stuff at local events. Hell, I DO random stuff at local events. I’m sure Starcraft players and Halo players do the same thing. People that know me know I’m a horribly vulgar and offensive person (ask my loving wife). They also know I don’t mean a damn thing I say. And they also know I don’t stand on a table and yell “RAPE THAT FUCKING BITCH!” at the top of my lungs in a room with more than a few women. I know better than to do something that stupid. And yet the FGC sees NO issue with their high-profile players and personalities doing this. On the internet. In front of THE internet. While openly betting on the players right in front of them. Not only that, but they LIKE this. They like it SO much that they’re willing to sacrifice the success of good players to keep it. THIS is a problem. This is THE problem.

Personally, I WANT competitive fighting games to be huge. I WANT top players to make a living playing. I WANT to be involved in large-scale events. Hell, I want people to come to ME and say, “We want to host a gaming tournament here and we heard you’re the guy to talk to around here.” This stuff happens for FPSers. This stuff happens for Starcraft players. But until my community grows the hell up, it won’t happen for us.

On his stream he said a few minutes ago ‘this wasn’t a big deal 2-3 years ago when I was saying the exact same thing why is it a big deal now why am I getting thrown under the bus?’

He obviously doesn’t understand.

Maybe the EVO organizers have become grownup, respectable, influential members of society and now, for whatever reason, dont want their names associated with colleagues who make insensitive, crude remarks. May seem abit draconian. But that is their prerogative, and if you want to play you have to take this into account.
accountability
grown folks

I am so entertained.

He’s not Floe that’s for sure. Times are changing. And shit better start changing.

I hadn’t seen that, that’s kind of disappointing.

The answer is simple though, people are paying attention now. He said that shit at the worst possible time, and should have known better.

I want to like you Marn, quit being a retard!

Looks like we’re going hollywood.

I wonder what a PG-13 yipes is gonna sound like

welp, here’s to streams becoming boring as fuck from now til forever.
