A Litany of Hate: In Defense of the FGC

I think I give on this thread though (cue applause)

It’s the primary flaw of the FGC that who you are is the most important thing in how people react to you, far more than anything except for the absolute highest levels of skill.

Sexism is one element of that, but you see it in just about everything. The problem here is that it’s not about the game to people at this point, its about respecting community status and reinforcing community myths.

We shouldn’t give a fuck who anyone is, we should judge them on what they do. If anything, high profile members of the community should be held to a HIGHER standard, not a lower (which is what they get; 'he’s actually a nice guy! there must be some explanation for the terrible things he just did/said! It must be the other person who’s not important’s fault!").

The problem was admitted (ummm aris problem with miranda). an we have moved on… they have moved on…

you… are trying very hard to make that one situation deem to be THE WHOLE COMMUNITY

Yes I will defend the community cause I am in it, support it, an love it for the last 12+ years. I can admit when something that reflects on the community is wrong (what aris did to miranda… how keits singled out marn…etc.) I know we have players that act up. I know we have some people with no common sense and guess what…its not all out there or at every turn. You sit back an want this to be something that it is not. Our top players have had their ego stroked (remember it got to a point of signing sticks an creating documentaries) as I stated earlier but I bet after the Arturo/Jago/Mike Ross that will tone down. This community learns quickly long as WE… again WE set a tone an plan

Admit what… how we bash women? We dont… dont confuse the online masses… come to tourny an you will see

Admit what… sexism?? We don’t… dont confuse the online masses… we give any woman that wants to play a fair share an if anything support them better than the males

Admit what… the egos are getting a bit too much? Sure… I said that and I have a PLAN on helping change that being that I do know majority of our top players and can speak with them with no problem

So last time. If you feel we have a issue lay our a plan to help resolve it or act on it. This isnt a police interrogation (just admit it an we can move on)… we are not going to admit something thats not us. Even your ‘examples’ didnt help cause you know yourself they dont add up correctly IF you are seriously part of this community.

koop stop wasting your time on that sad clown, he likes to argue for the sake of arguing, and will always try hard to maintain his position not matter how many times people prove that he is wrong

Damn this dude seriously loves to contradict…

Lmao…

Learn to let things go…

Arguing with xesaie is pointless. Right or wrong he will argue. Sounds likw a swriius lame if you ask me

LOL at Koopsta trying to imply those multiple girls saying bad shit happened at these events were just lying

he sounds like those guys back during Vietnam who swore up and down no one raped any Viet chicks except like 5 dudes

meanwhile back in Nam women got raped left and right and napalmed

He never implied that. If you want to start an argument…find a real reason to.

Edit: you joined the 3rd and posted bs every post…obviously a troll.

rofl oh SRK threads

ZootSoot you’ve already had a lame “am i edgy yet?” meltdown in here maybe you should stick to slurs – they seem more your speed when trolling. Insinuating stuff like that is a bit more serious, even if it’s unsubstantiated.

Seriously you persist in leveling these accusations and expecting people to take them at face value. There are no consequences for being an asshat on a forum – I mean you’re case in point – so obviously the nature of the discourse is going to be a lot more offensive and stupid.

I dunno man, you would need to produce an exceptional amount of evidence to suggest it’s “omnipresent”. I mean, omnipresent in the sense that the patriarchy is alive and well or omnipresent in the sense that everyone here harbors those views?

I think you’re wishing really hard for the latter to be true because you’d like to feel incisive or share some exceptional insight. It really sounds like you’re just trolling at this point, though.

PKMaximo has got to be the biggest piece of shit in this whole thread and or website.

He is another cancer which kills this community, and is killing humanity at large. Have you guys ever read a smash or anime forum? He is the type of shit that floods those forums with cancer.

Fat man apologized to that ugly girl. They moved on. Some dick calls the whole community sexist, and community says fuck you no we aren’t. the cancer within the community tries to burn the entire community on 3 situations and says its a rampant problem. Community defends itself with valid points and the cancer says fuck you go burn im right you’re wrong and you need to bend over and take it in the ass.

yeah, this community is starting to feel the consequences of being flooded with fucking cancer from other communities. .

“Aris does not represent the FG community” “Aris not the community”

This is very good, it’s such a good counter argument…Whenever someone does something retarded in the FG community we can denounce him for not representing the FG community.

If Marn says something dumb…“Marn does not represent the FG community”

If Justin Wong date-rapes some girl…“Justin Wong is not the community, the rest of us don’t do that”

If Alex Valle goes on a killing spree…“Alex Valle does not represent the FG community”

Do you see the problem here? With this line of logic you can pretty much get away with anything. Anyone in the community that slips up and does something stupid acted on his own, there is nothing wrong with the FG community

I don’t think you understand the ‘no true scotsman’ fallacy, RECESSIONTIME. The problem is that you are generalizing from a specific case of someone using hate speech to segue into demands that ‘the community’ to recognize it is a problem. You then conveniently ignore the prevalence of these attitudes in the outside world – which are often given voice in gaming fandoms and the internet as a whole! Have a quick glance at any news site’s comments about gender roles or race relations, or anything else similarly controversial. Surprise, the world is rife with people who say hateful and stupid things all the time. Sometimes they just need to be reminded what they said was dumb, others will double down on it and get hostile.

My take on it is that no, no here is a parent or educator, and I doubt SRK is going to run sensitivity seminars at its events, so what would you like from ‘us’? Soul searching? I do enough of that on my own, thanks. My personal life has nothing to do with the time I spend replying to threads on SRK or discussing a hobby centered around a video game.

You’d ought to understand this particular forum (and almost any one I could think of) isn’t going to suddenly be an environment where people are going to re-learn how to treat other human beings. If it were just a matter of getting the word out that sexism is bad then there are endless websites to link, books to read, and groups to attend just relating to the topic alone – which itself is still controversial in the mainstream to this day. Look at what Rush Limbaugh just said to a student at Georgetown law school and the ensuing media fracas.

Having attempted to join a discussion about the small amount of female participants at tournies myself, and seen others try to discuss gender relations in general, it does not end well. Oftentimes because people only seem to prolong debates in bad faith or raise self-serving doubts about the intentions of its participants because they harbor an agenda from the get-go or like to toy with people – the usual forum troll routine. This continues well past the end of any productive discussion, too.

Guess what it looks like you, xesaie and a few others keep doing in this thread?

What meltdown? Only one crying here are all the people whining about what sexual harassment means, and going “girls need to GTFO!!! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah”

Shouldn’t you be playing Virtua Fighter? Oh wait, I forgot, no one plays Virtua Fighter except like 5 people in this community, oops…

I’ll say this, and this one thing, as a concession to you guys, because there is one thing I do agree with oddly that people here are saying. And that is the fact that these media PC hounds have jumped down your throats unfairly. Don’t get me wrong, the sexism shit that goes on needs to stop, and it would do you guys a lot of favors if you had people knock off the “yo yo yo yo homey nigga rape dat hoe bitch faggot mafucca” stuff on live streams. With that said, I see why you don’t wanna go full blown esports, because quite frankly, who the fuck wants EVO to turn into this?

"Justin Wong is about to go into a super with Chun Li, Daigo is on the ropes… ah look, Daigo has successfully parried the super, and won the game. Fantastic play by Daigo, the Japanese are known for their sense of strategy and parrying ability."
quiet clapping

Yeah, no thanks, sounds boring as shit to me. People should be able to relax and yell and scream when someone does some crazy shit during a match. It feels articificial and forced to see people standing all calmly halfass clapping and talking softly when they see something amazing happen. In that regard I honestly understand, because some MLG styled event would be boring as fucking shit. Just don’t brush off the legit issues in the community because of “esports”, if anything that’s what MLG would WANT you guys to do, get overly defensive and act like nothing at all is wrong, so they can continue ganging up on you with these nonstop attack articles about how you’re all perverts, until eventually Inkblot turns EVO into some shitty boring golf event where you whisper anytime someone pulls a crazy combo or win.

ps, yall need to stop catering to these fucking idiots on these streams, from what I’ve been hearing Aris always acts odd as shit anyway, but he didn’t truly harass that girl until he was taking cues from “stream monsters”. Yall need to ignore those fuckers, they can go watch the streams but they should have no influence on shit, don’t pander to them don’t play shit up on the cameras for them, none of that. Same goes for this staging feuds stuff, sounds like half the problem right here is people catering to morons on stream. Do you really wanna cater to people who do nothing but spam the chats up with how every game except SF4/MvC3 is shit?

@Emx did you day no one here is a parent or educator? I really do not think that is true of the entire site…and the ones who are parents or educators are not the “problem”. I doubt their reaction to all this added fuel to the fire.

Sent using my Evo…not the 3D ish…eff 3D!

I meant to say that they do not play that role here, nor should they have to. I’m not sure why you thought I said that they’d be part of a problem.

Zoot you’re obviously not interested in a discussion so why are you still posting? You’re just blatantly being an ass.

I dont know about Starcraft, but normal sports can have yelling and hype and stuff too. Whilst being professional at the same time. Theres no reason why eSports cant be like that.

The arguments in this thread…

Point of thread… gone.

Although while it is great that you know how to wiki and took a philosophy 101 class. If you look at what the “No True Scotsman” fallacy is about it does not apply here. The point I made was that Aris’s action do not represent the rest of us. I never at once said he was not a member of the community or that a true member of the community would not do that. But that for the most part we are not like that because we are to busy playing.

Aris and Marn are scotsmen. One of them got carried away and the other is dumb as all shit for what he did. It just so happens that scotman Aris is not in a position to speak for us, and had he been, he’d probably would’ve been asked to step down.

But hey, stay cute doll, the hard looking make up is pretty on your face.

I really don’t think it would be a “role” if they do speak from that aspect…i do think the ones who are would be totally ignored in spite of their role. irony in all this is I am actually doing my MEd studies and working on gender hegemony. I could post about that aspect of all this, but it won’t change anyone’s opinion so why bother?
I didn’t say you said they were part of the problem, just stating a less biased opinion or “experienced” opinion would add more substance to this argument, but once again reason can never change how someone “feels”.
I just keep thinking “would you want someone on stream talking to your mom/sister/gf like that” though.

I keep seeing people post about extremes of changing what is said on stream or while commenting…no need for all that. Calling Storm their bitch is different from calling the person playing with her a bitch. Unfortunately it seems people cannot tell the difference between a real person and a character on the game.
