A Litany of Hate: In Defense of the FGC

Marn is Marn, he’s the Jay Leno of the fighting game community, people love to hate him and occasionally find him amusing.

It’s natural selection at work, streams bring out that kind of behaviour, and eventually it becomes so natural to them they try it in real life and get their ass kicked.

And it’s nice he’s not a member of the mutual masturbation society.

Does not compute.

So where is all the Floe hate for also poking fun at the situation

Floe: aww I dont like being here, I feel awkward, Im uncomfortable. Giant Bomb please write an article about this. I feel very awkward and uncomfortable OMG

There’s a big group of people that are all personal friends and spend a lot of time pimping each other (which, for instance, is why Chen is considered a good commentator, all his buddies talk him up because he’s a nice guy), as far as I can tell marn doesn’t give a fuck about this old boys’ network, if not going out of his way to get in their faces.

I appreciate that.

Edit: K3lloggz, presumably people don’t know about it, I hadn’t heard that for one. The fat fuck needs to shut up.

Are you seriously going to make a statement like that, generalizing the entire FGC as sexist neanderthals, and expect me not to? Single out people next time, don’t blame the entire community - the generalization is what’s gotten us into this whole mess in the first place. Not everyone is Aris but sexism does exist within the community through some of the more vocal members. However, we’re not all sexist pigs. I, for one, don’t mind sexist pigs existing in our community though. I like how diverse we are and that we’ve been accepting of everyone for a long time up until now. Chris Hu can barely speak English and we let him commentate because we don’t give a shit that he can’t - he loves the game, just like how Marn and ETR do. I don’t think people should be shunned just because they have a personality some people have a distaste for. Sorry you don’t like them, but some of us are more accepting I suppose.

Unless it gets to the point of rape or something of that nature, I think sexist remarks or homophobic remarks are the least worrying issue. The whole thing is just blowing out of proportion by one incident happening, then causing any small issue within it to be a HUGE issue. It’s really annoying that ETR has been banned from commentating - I mean, are you serious? ETR? From that? It’s completely ridiculous and stupid that we’ve had to get to this point. Yipes is the rawest dude in the scene and I am very sure that he’s going to get banned from commentating if this keeps up. I am going to be a sad dude on that day.

I thought it was pretty funny… sheesh u go hard ughhh

Yea, your argument is still valid. Or do you just like to feel right?

Some people very close to me have been in similar situations, it’s no joke for some retard gamer to make light of.

Edit@N-Z: I’ve never said that personal insults were out of bounds… and that comment really, legitimately, pisses me off.

A better example would have been the incidents of cheating/match rigging and accusations of such which have tarnished the history of the competitive Starcraft scene.

The difference, though, is that the SC community does not screw around when these types of incidents happen, and the backlash these players receive is overwhelming and swift. Progamers are banned or suspended from any sort of competitive play, commentators are ostracized and sponsors reorganize entire teams based on failure to meet the standards expected by the community. Part of it is simply cultural- without a doubt the unspoken rules regarding SC competition would be a heck of a lot more lax if the scene wasn’t heavily focused in Korea- but it’s also that a group of extremely dedicated figures have spent over a decade helping the scene scrape it’s way to national prominence and want it to continue to grow. The community in general has built a perception of competitive purity around Starcraft 2, and they have done a great job for competitive gaming in general trying to make pro tournaments more respectable.

So I have mixed feelings about the FGC compared to other gaming communities. On the one hand I’m glad fighting game tournaments have a level of drama to them (much more so than most esports in general) and lack bureaucratic nonsense like disqualifying players from tournaments for not typing “gg” properly. On the other hand, I feel like the standards for fighting game commentary is often awful beyond belief. Why would anyone think that steaming racist or sexist tirades is acceptable for high level tournaments? If it doesn’t do the competitors justice and it certainly does absolutely nothing to keep players from outside the FGC interested in the matches. Most people are interested in commentary to help explain what is going on in the game, not for a bad stand up comedy routine. If nothing else that should be kept for streams of local tournaments or Youtube commentary, not corporate sponsored tournaments viewed by tens of thousands of people.

In other words : The evo commentators.

…Absolutely not… FGC while smaller and less profitable than other Esport communities, is one of the most diverse communities in Esport. They making literally baseless generalization for the actions of the few. That WNF video is a ridiculous nitpick, and it doesn’t truly support the views of what the community speaks. Not only that, but does not capture true sexist views of the community.

Not all communities are vile and mean to woman in a fighting game environment. Did you see World Game Cup in Europe, where Tournament Organizers had quite a few ladies that play SF4 or even SCV without issues? Why should Europe be cramed in the entire nonsensical generalization of by gaming media? Think about how many scenes that people are labeling as sexist…

What proof is the Skullgirl community is the sexist?
What proof is that KOF community is sexist?
What the fuck do Smash(wink) or BlazBlue do to be considered sexist?

Do Capcom’s fighting game community TRULY represent the ENTIRE community? America is truly the only spectrum of the Fighting game Community?Come on, it’s bullshit. The worst part is those scenes are going to be labeled sexist by those morons writing these hurtful articles.

:coffee:

Yo.

Anyway, times change fortunately/unfortunately. Learn from the mistakes and keep it moving. 2012 has been crazy.

Yipes is praised for no reason at all.

And seriously, if anyone, and i mean ANYONE, can pull up random streams of people saying racist/misgonist things, then i’ll accept that it is a big problem. I never ever watched a stream or heard players actively shit on women/other races, unless it’s a light joke ( Japanese got that execution) if you can pull anything supporting your argument, i’ll gracefully accept defeat.

We just had a discussion about that very thing over in General Discussion.

If the community is so permeated with sexism and racism that we can’t help but shout out hate speech, then what better time is there to start cleaning up our collective act?

That you would think it’s okay for people to joke about the outrage in a dismissive manner makes you part of the long-ignored problem.

This is generally not a problem for people who aren’t assholes. In fact, this is almost exclusively a problem for terrible people. It speaks in volumes of your character if you consider not shouting hate speech “in the heat of the moment” such a daunting task.

*points to CrossXAssault stream, and then to any discussion involving BurnYourBra

The whole problem is that there was an explicit obvious case of sexual harassment followed by a pretty damn misogynistic string of public responses.

The crossassault thing and the followup to it show the problem sussinctly

The funny part is there is like 6 chicks who play and over a million males playing this game , i mean really who gives a shit, its over exaggerated and there never gonna be a huge influx of women fight game players Anyway, i mean really how many tourney rape cases have there really been?

So I got the first “hilarious” comment from a person I often talk with. “So hey, do you want to sniff my girlfriend?” I asked him what his deal was, he said that the majority of fighting gamers were revealed as sex offender apologists. Wondering what the hell he was talking about, I went onto SRK and found this bullshit.

Fuck Aris for being a scumbag. Fuck Kotaku for inflating this issue with their page-view oriented journalism. Fuck Capcom for not regulating their show more.

I just like to play fighting games and sometimes go to tournaments. Why the fuck should I get persecuted for it?
