That was ridiculous. Getting 7+ cubes in the air after an air exchange is crazy. Didn’t know aerial exchanges reset hitstun decay…
Sickest of the sick. Need to practice those exchange combos a.s.a.p.
first tourney with modok
Hey guys, just wanted to post my first tourney play with my modok team. The video is actually casuals and I wish I could have gotten more modok on stream but I think I did ok the first time actually playing modok competitively. I’d say I’m trying for more of a rushdown modok but I think this match I was forced to zone a lot more because taskmaster had such priority over modok’s normals.
So hope you guys enjoy and any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

modok play starts at 10:37
(I do ok in the beginning but get raped later as this dude kinda figures my stuff out)
Things I’m working on now:
- use assists to get in
- block
- modok can get instaoverhead kinda like sentinel
- a lot of the cast have much greater normal priority moves over modok
First off I’d say don’t use MODOK on point unless you’re fighting against someone with no airdash or projectiles, and when you do always start the match off in flight. Remember that you can call assists while in flight and get around with battering ram, air dash and flight mode. Constantly cross them up with assists while in flight. I’ve tried many many times to find a way to start Modok as point, but its too overwhelming for him. You’re right that he gets out prioritized like mad. Get a character to soften them up first and then bring Modok in to clean up. If you can, get and exchange combo going with your point so you come in with as many cubes as you can. That instantly makes MODOK way scarier from close and far…which im sure you’re already aware of. Im just pointing out that MODOK is free if he can’t strike fear in you lol. Also use more Regular/EX Dorito shields off blockstrings and not defensively in fire fights unless you know they don’t have meter.
Cubes and TK Cubes are a great poke and you should be spamming those like mad to fish for understanding, setting up your rush down and generally just to be annoying hehe. Try thinking of them as footsies and learn their different ranges. TK cubes are especially annoying because you can come out of them with an air dash or tri dash for throw/tick throws/frame traps. You need to get them to that corner and when you do, Kill them with corner combos/pressure. With that team you have I’m sure you can get better damage than what you’re getting now. Instead of c.M > HBR super after magic series, try c.mp + iron man assist > regular Battering Ram. That should extend your combos and make it easier to get them to the corner. Other than that, looks good. You look like you have a pretty good handle of the character…just gotta find creative ways to get in and not get rushed down. Mobility is key. But yeah, try starting MODOK second and I think you’ll instantly see more success. Keep it up
MODOK in his current form is definitely meant to be a #2 character. If you’re running MODOK teams you absolutely need the threat of tag-in kill combos that build 9 cubes, and whether or not you want him to stick around after landing the kill is kind of up to you/the matchup.
I’m trying to figure out a MODOK team that isn’t quite so all-in, as currently I feel like you’re in a lot of trouble if your point character gets taken out before killing a character yourself. He isn’t good under pressure and while he has some great tools for being a jerk it’s tough to start a combo before getting hit yourself.
So I’ve been playing around with my rushdown MODOK, in all honesty a lot of MODOK players I’ve seen play MODOK as a canon. I truly think that with the right assist MODOK can rush with impunity. Right now my team is MODOK/Sent/DOOM or MODOK/SENT/DORM or DEADPOOL/MODOK/DOOM.
These teams are built for different purposes:
MODOK/SENT/DOOM is my MODOK rushdown team, of course with MODOK rushing with Sent Drones to cover. Imo this MODOK has to have a great command of air dashing. The trick is too first gain momentum with MODOK. I generally do this by starting the round in flight mode high in the air. Calling Sent and crossing up the opponent to protect him. From there it’s all about air dash loops and baiting pushblocks, placing doritos after block strings or using psionic blasters while close to push back + sent drones. (This team is MAD hard for me to play online btw, NOT SUGGESTED) To properly play this team you need instant air dash loops that will take the opponent to the corner if you land it. If you drop a string ALWAYS use a analyze cube to cover your ass! Even if they jumpin and you mistime it they’ll land on it. The bread and butter of this team is RESETS yes, IAD loops make for some of the sexiest reset options. Sometimes I’ll drop just to IAD into an air throw and enter combo of choice! After the onlslaught you’ll have meter to burn and sentinel to DHC too if you land HPB. Of course that means DEAD character because SENTINEL is still Sentinel if you’ve done your job right. What’s doom for? I generally call him right before I go for a reset, because during the attempt I’ll more likely get launched than anything else if I mess up. IAD means they’ll end up hitting me in the air, then to the ground by then HIDDEN MISSILES will save my ass. That and I’m all about DOOMS touch of death, I think as an Anchor he isn’t bad at all.
MODOK/SENT/DORM: Same idea, MODOK if you can rush competently he’s a great battery. It’s risky however because you have to be mindful to cross up or dash so actively SENT stays off screen. I save the super meter for SENT/DORM. DHC to sent for the kill or DORM doing what dorm does. Chip Chip Baby.
DEADPOOL/MODOK/SENT: This is probably the safest team, this is the team I use the exchange combo with most actively because
I think that Deadpool has problems pooring on the pain so the exchange combo works wonders. Also bring SENT in after the combo to kill whoever needs killing. Tag in FULLY CHARGED MODOK to chip/kill whoever when the time comes. This team is just sex but takes some consistency on the exchange combos to be truly feared.
Once I get my combos down 100% I’m going to go for the tournament circuit. Wish me luck!
Sounds great, man. Your teams look solid too. Your comment about not using the first team online is absolutely right. In fact, I’ve learned that using MODOK online just doesn’t work at all. You need his crazy combos for the big kill combos, and you won’t pull those off in latency.
Good luck in upcoming tournaments. What state are you in? Hopefully you’re near decent competition.
There’s no shortage of comp here, I live in NY and Philly. I haven’t had the time to actually do the tournament thing yet. Once I do the goal isn’t 1st, just to blow fools up with MODOK
Awesome. I expect to see your MODOK in future streams.
Thanks for the advice man. What’s a Tk Cube? I’m going to keep the staying in flight in mind and try to pick my spots when I try to rush in. I think I’ll try to start them second once I learn the analyze cube aex combos but I’m having trouble with them at the moment.
With the assists I’m using I’m trying to use Iron Man to keep them grounded so I can charge in, but a lot of the time I’m just thinking of staying mobile so I don’t get rushed down and forget to call in assists all together. And I use deadpool low assist to get quick unblockables but I wasn’t using that on stream either.
Tiger knee cubes. The motion would be :qcb: :ub:. Good for pokes, and you can throw a medium cube if they jump and then another light while still in block stun land tk cubes again or a pressure string.
My current team is M.O.D.O.K/Doom/Haggar. Looking to replace haggar for someone else, as I’m not as reliant on him as I used to be. But it’s always fun otg’ing after a lariat assist. I’m rolling with Molecular shield with doom it’s short sweet and you can do some good mixups with it. The question is, who should I replace haggar with?

Royal Flush managed to use Thor/Viewitful Joe/MODOK in a team

His MODOK shine at 7:00+, and he still managed to block a Bionic lancer when he was doing a ballon bomb at 8:39+

That’s pretty impressive stuff, especially the fact that he uses that team.

oh ok thanks man I’ll try that asap.
I was going to suggest with your deadpool team. I use his low assist (quick work) and do an IAD S with Modok for an unblockable. The great thing is it’s a really fast unblockable. Mess around with the timing of when you call the assist and when you do the IAD but really it doesn’t matter that much. Whether MODOK hits last or deadpool hits last they both cause a ground bounce/falling animation and just follow up with a L analyze cube into combo of choice.
I don’t know if this has been found out but I think this japanese guy (same one doing the spiderman/deadpool UWT combos) is doing a DHC trick into Modok.

It starts at 4:45 in the match
damn I love that last one when MODOK owns wolverine. I hate wolvie with a passion. His dive kick owns Modok lol
If you’re starting to lean towards a rushdown modok I would really recommend a character with a low assist that you’re comfortable with. IAD Forward Modok + Low assist equals fast unblockables. Or maybe someone with a good lockdown beam like dorm or ironman. good luck with the soul searching
A lot of MODOK action here, including Justin Wong’s MODOK. MOTEMPEST got the best MODOK those…but he doesn’t have the right team

There is a lot talk about how MODOK is a good matchup aganist Doom.
