Marlin vs frutsy not on stream

I know that feeling. Whenever I’m looking at hype matches like that (like Chris G losing to FChamp), I still recoil from how some of those matches were thrown away. :frowning: There’s always next year. And good stuff to all involved.

Watching these Frutsy vids makes me realize that people were dropping combos against him all weekend… not just against hit MODOK either! He’s just… un-combobable.

The Frutsy Factor.

If anyone cares, you can watch me get blown up at my first tournament. I went 2 (maybe 3?)-2, but it was a lot a fun! I really need my 360 dpad on PS3… I can’t do motions on a PS3 pad consistently at all (especially P1 side)… not even super jumping, so my usual neutral was thrown off :frowning: Hopefully, I won’t have access to those excuses soon.

I got 3 matches streamed. First is at 1:33:30 (Zero May Cry player went nuts while I figured out my controls lol… lost badly, really good player), the second is at 2:47:20 (I somehow won and got a few completed combos), and the third is right after the second (I lost). There’s a lot of obvious mistakes, but I think some of what I was trying to do got through. Once I get my modded pad, hopefully I can do the character justice (or at least validate all the playing time I have with this character).

Hard to critique you fully when you were using a controller that you are not used to, but you made a few odd decisions here and there, particularly with your x factors. Often you would save it for Doom and then use it in a situation the was pretty arbitrary, rather than saving it for a guard cancel or to snuff a bad assist call. I’d say look to use x factor level 2 a bit more since doom is always a bit iffy on his own and he can do big damage without x factor as long as he has meter. If you have magneto or modok alive, you can use it more proactively to blow up a bad assist call for a happy birthday to gain momentum rather than gamble it on a solo Doom. Though I did see you go for some of those aggressive x factors and dropped them, I’m guessing due to the different controller. Some of them were just odd as well though, like when you pushed the zero away with pillars and then xfactored at level 1 when it seemed like you were safe anyway.

I am just not usually a fan of saving x factor for level 3 if you aren’t using one of the real top tier anchor characters like Vergil/Strider/Pheonix, etc.

I second the x factor lvl 2 strategy. Use it wisely to blow up atleast 2 characters and double team their third.

Yeah, I did kind of randomly use XFactor, but I think some of it was unfamiliarity with the controller and just wanting to put my opponent on defense ASAP. I dropped so many hyper inputs too. I’ll keep in mind using XF2 more when it’s worth it.

I was just looking a frutsy’s matches and he hit the most j.S I’ve ever since with modok, but i don’t think its a bad idea. Get your opponent scared to super jump, fly and zone and wait for the opponent to push a button. Control the pace of the match so you can get away from those things.

Anyways, LTP I know you’re much better at swag than that. I personally don’t go for swag out stuff unless I feel like it. Just going with the stuff fchamp and fanatiq uses. Against zero may cry team I would just use magneto first. I think in tournaments they let you switch ur characters around even when u win. Which is something I just found out recently. Zone with blasts and disrupters, air disrupters, missiles etc. just know timing of ur assists to take the right action i guess. I alternate positions but mag first fits my overly aggressive playstyle. Mag can kill with modok tac, tod combo or just do resets if u get a throw. With modok if I get a throw, I’m not certain if I get the jamming bomb combo. I need to find a better one I guess. Then he gets the corner for modoks barrier offense. Also, you can troll with air tempest into dhc killer illumination.

I know, I’m getting a modded 360 pad in the coming weeks, so I’ll be able to hit stuff consistently once I get it… I still like trying to swag anyway just for the fun :). I also just rushed down most of the time because I didn’t want to risk too many mistakes doing the motions on PS3. Personally, I like the Dok vs. Zero matchup better than Magneto vs. Zero… it’s just that I couldn’t do my zoning properly. I do like using Shockwave into HBR though… if you can space it right, you can follow up with a combo if Shockwave hits.

They don’t let you switch characters, assists or order in a tournament

Wait u can’t switch order? I thought that was standard mind game stuff?

You can’t switch order when you win. You can when you lose a game.

I should also mention, I do think it is OK to save x factor for Doom depending on the match up, but if you find yourself against certain characters that he has no approach against when on his own, try to make use of your second character while you can. So this would be against like, Dorm, Hawkeye, etc. and if you do have X factor and Doom left against those characters, save it for the rare time’s you can actually confirm a combo.

Just turning it on to put them on the defensive is simply a waste, or in RTS terms its like guaranteed damage vs recoverable damage. If you turn x factor on to guard cancel/happy birthday/boost a confirmed hit’s damage, you are guaranteeing (or near guaranteeing) that your xfactor is contributing to a win. If you just turn it outside of those situations (not counting using it to avoid being chipped to death), you are gambling your most powerful resource without making sure it will net you anything. They might come in swinging and not care about your glowing red status, or they might just x factor back at you once they block.

So it is a lot like attacking someone’s planetary fortress in Starcraft, when you know you cannot kill it before you are forced to retreat. The damage you did was not guaranteed and they can recover from it with repairs and the like. Whereas if you instead focused on killing a supply depot as you retreat, you will have done some real, albeit small, unrecoverable damage.

By turning X factor on in a situation where you are not guaranteeing its damage, or saving your own hide, you are just opening yourself up to be guard cancelled at your opponents leisure should they still have an x factor on deck. So keep your snap backs handy in those situations and try to bait them out, or just don’t put yourself in a situation like that to begin with.

I know it’s a waste to just put them on the defensive in general, but I just wanted some more time to mess around with my controller and see if I could get anything going. I wasn’t taking it too seriously. I completely agree with you though.

Got my modded PS3 pad. Best decision ever!

A bit of a protip…

You can link to the exact hour, minutes, and seconds of a stream by coding a random twitch tv html

So for example, if I wanted to link Royal Flush do a 9 cube combo loop, it’s possible doing it like this.
http://www.twitch.tv/uniteightyseven/b/324963331?t=47m30s

Put a question mark at the end of html, then a lower case t, put a equal sign. And the format goes (insert number here)H=hours>(insert number here)M=minutes>(insert number here )S=seconds. if You don’t have to write a H sign, you can skip the hour format and write the minute format next to it, and same thing if you want to write something especially for seconds.

Linking second before a mintue would pass would be like this.

and if you want to link something a hour, it would be like this.

either way you want to link the time to be correct format listed, and it might take a while for html to load the time too.

Here are some Rubeks matches on Arcade UFO…I’m just testing if this works correctly anyway.

Rubeks has got a lot of technology going at the moment, especially with the balloon bomb assist.
I did spot one really cool move he did with MODOK that looks really hard to block. I’m not sure which video it is in but there is a part where he had MODOK on point, and for his incoming character mix-up, he put out the L balloon bomb fairly close to the edge, then super jumped and did an ADDF S.J. The bomb then has to be blocked the opposite way and if they block that then they may have to block the other way again for the incoming j.S. Conveniently both moves combo into eachother no matter which one hits.
This’ll probably replace my normal barrier into cubes and slime spam on incoming characters.

L bomb is probably the best thing to have out on incoming mixups midscreen. I usually just dash under the bomb for a cross up or fake cross up, and after they see the setup, I try to stuff air dashes/double jumps with :df::h:. Certain assists make it even better. I’ll try out super jumping with j.S and see how that goes.

I don’t know if i dreamt it or it really happened but i could.have sworn i saw a modok.video (from ltp ) i think where modok comboed off of hidden missiles with analyze cube, wall bounce then jamming bomb. i checked the videos i thought it was but it isn’t there. am i imagining things? No other assists were used.

that mixup amuses me to no end! Anyone have some modok/haggard tech i can troll with? Corner cube combos? i figure the standard double launch into otg, beam, larist, wall bounce follow up is possible but Im looking for something different and jeez do i suck with haggard!

This is sort of what I’ve been doing for welcome mixups too… Before they come in, superjump, then airdash downforward with S. It can crossup or not crossup depending on the timing. The addition of the L-balloon bomb just makes it nastier! I think you wouldn’t want to do the balloon bomb it too close to the corner though, to give them space to get under you before hitting it and ensure the crossup.

The real tricky part is getting back to the other side to keep the corner combo… off the jump S you can box jump H for the crossup, but it’s quite tricky… with the Balloon bomb, I dunno how that would work lol.
