A fresh breath of air is needed? Don't you think?

~Born to Play~

There is a post similar to this, asking the question about the gamers and the public; in terms of bringing a new set or demographic of gamers and casual gamers to the scene. Now when I ask this question my immediate concern is New York City right now. After speaking with a couple of people in China Town Fair I was informed that the scene is not growing and is at an eventual dead rate. To elaborate on that, the scene isn’t dead, but it is not progressing so it might as well be.

Is there a problem? What is the problem? How do we find a solution? These three questions are here to inspire answers from the public gaming community for players here in NYC or the east coast the come to play in either CTF (China Town Fair)tournament Philly tournaments or Break tournaments. Lets focus however on CTF for now. For all those that this matter to interms of being in the SRK community please read the questions answer them honestly. I need your imput so that I can put that information to use to further help create something better for your community. Empire Arcadia’s job is to entertain you guys, and so far from what I have heard of late, some of you guys are “Not Feeling” it. So please take your stab at this and make your concerns felt.

  1. What is it that you do not like about CTF tournaments?

  2. Does players such as Justin (Marvelous) and Santhrax ward you away from playing MVC2 or CVS2?

  3. Do you feel cheated or ripped off by some of these tournaments?

  4. What concerns in terms of environment are you not please with when you come around CTF tournaments?

  5. If things were to change for the better based on the publics request, would you then be incline to bring other fighting game players to participate in the tournaments?

  6. Does money games hold an significant impact on the way tournaments entertain? And if yes, why?

  7. Do Top teir players take incentive away to get into the games at CTF? IF so, would you like to see it stopped and why?

  8. Does bonuses make a difference in your decision to attend these tournaments?

  9. Do you feel that better time arrangements or day would be better to host CTF tournament rather than Fridays and Saturdays?

  10. If you have any other issues or random complaints that were not asked in question here, please state them now.

The purpose of these questions is to see what changes can Empire Arcadia make in terms of what it can do to help lift the scene. For other than the first 3 tournaments of the year and the Evo ticket tournament, the community has been sluggish and I want to address the issues why and fix them. I can only do this with your help. Until then.

soon as i get g00d im comin! im in hempstead long island right now so all i have to do is take the train to the city. bringing like 10 ppl wit me. takeover! ya!!

1)Entry fee should be in the 3-5 dollor range. Iv seen somewhere around 7 sometimes and, putting that much money into a tourney your probably going to lose in to justin or someone is to much.

2)Depends on the entry fee. I wont pay anything above 5 if there in it, because it almost certain you dont have a chance at winning.

3)No

4)None

5)No

6)In a way, it kind of hypes up the match

7)Nope, I think it only sways people from entering tournies though

8)Yeah, it’s cool to see who wins what, like I really wanted to go see who would win that evo tickit, even though I couldnt show

9)No, but they shouldnt end to late

10)Tournies should be on free play considering we have to pay to enter

I used to goto CTF all the time, least once every other week. Then this lame empire arcadia thing came out and I suddenly stopped going (where I only been there 2x in the last 18 months)

but of course correlation doesn’t mean causation

I dont think u can fix this problem… I just think that alot of the player’s are getting older… like 20/26.

They probally got “hotter shit” going on in their live’s,and running to play in CF tournament’s is probally last on their… “to do lists”.

Maybe u should think of going in to the Resturant/Gas station Biz.

Little money to be made in Pushing Arcade Empires. :looney:

  1. definitely yes.

That’s the reason why I don’t play any tournement.
All the tournements I seen so far have evolved around good players. For the first round, they pretty much end up making sure who is playing who, or may end up making sure that they meet their friends last. You also get the usual share of “I give up” when two top-player friends met, and they share the money.

Another shit that I seen happening is that top players get an unfair advantage over other “normal” players.
I watched one time a tournement where John Choi was allowed to come late and was allowed to skipped a round because of the odd number of players.
It would be even better if you allowed any of the next three(or pick any number) following games to be played in order. For example, if someone went to the restroom and didn’t know he is supposed to play, why not skip his match temporally and move to the next one? CvS2 tournement is particularly known to have long and boring waiting time…

Finally some recommendations:

  • Try to come on time for the tournement.
  • Give up to 15 minutes before starting the tournement, just to make sure everyone who want to play is on the list.
  • rules should be crystal clear. Nobody should go to a top player and ask him what are the rules (I seen that too).
  • For games that have quick tournements, make them longer. I seen a MvC2 tournement where you get only one match, and one of the player is sent right away to the loser braket… that’s too fast for whatever entrance fee you are paying.
  • Entrance fees should depend on the number of players… after all you got to pay for each games. If you win, you are not supposed to spend more money on the machine than the 3rd price. However this is not LV. We are not here to feed you, top tier players. We are here just to have fun.
  • Camera should be allowed for everyone.
  • It would be great if you get a cam and record matches, at least the final ones. Not only it is a souvenir, but it is really nice for the community.

i dont like the fact that in my area the EGO problem is too big…if you aint a fanboy or kissing a top players ass, than you are less :xeye: …also the tourneys are fixed…what i mean by this is that peeps that are trying to get better and start to get into the sceneare put aside to the players who are already good…ang want to hog all the gaypex points.

  1. not enough space to move around
  2. no i like playing justin in mvc2. and ill play that nigga santhrax in anything. i could care less whether or not im gonna lose.
    3)no
4)the asians dont bother me but alot of the black kids who go here act gay. sometimes all i see in there are a bunch of homo niggas who are forced to come everyday cause they cant find a party or a girls house to go to. so when your man jw goes to get something to eat he got a couple of faggots following him. sorta like male groupies. that shit is disgusting.
5)i wouldnt be embarassed to bring people if the non asian players didnt seem gay or smell so bad.
6)i could care less if niggas play for money. bottomline is that they aint gonna hand me none so i dont care if they do it or not
  3. are you talking about top tier characters or actual players. listen if they banned sentinel from an mvc2 tournament i would say thats gay. if they banned jw from a tournament i would say that it is gay. ill play the game the way it was made. i dont complain about any tactics or dont care who im playing against or what team they wanna use. who cares.
    8)i never got a bonus
9)its good. maybe saturday and sunday would be better than friday cause some of the younger niggas gotta go to school.
  4. to put an end to this. ive noticed why the scene dosent grow or improve. because most of the so called top players are dickheads. i personally dont care to socialize with anyone in there anymore. if i lose ill say good game. im not gonna stand around and say hey this guy sucks cause he lost a game. these fuckin niggas in theyre take this shit too seriously. and some of these niggas is like 25 years old and r actually looking down on people cause they dont feel they are good enough in a game. its just a game. i havent been to cf in 3 years and i could care less if i never go back. like i said it isnt the asian kids who run thier mouth. they cool wit me. its all the minorities who is living in a fantasy world.

So far so good.

~Born to Play~

For all those that posted relivant concerns and answers to this post I am thank full for you insights and opinions. I am looking forward to more from others who are concerned about and wish to voice there opinions. Please keep it coming.

P.S. as for the post directly above this, that is a interesting perspective to look at CF. Interesting indeed. Until then.

What da fuck? The top players at CF in general are really nice guys. I don’t play much now so I’m not even really competitive at this point, but I’ve never felt anybody was looking down at me as a result. And I’m talking about the non-asians here. I have another idea why people are dickheads to you. Maybe you’re just an annoying prick that pisses people off. You racist tard.

listen boy when someone loses and then one of the so called top players in 3s whispers in his friends ear like a faggot cause hes not real enough to say it out loud then i think that shit is gay. the nigga im talking about wasnt even playing but he felt the need to put this guy down, after the guy left of course. ive heard things like oh this guy sucks and why is he wasting his money. he shouldve did this and that. maybe it never happened to you but ive seen it happen to people, people who dont bother anyone. and as for me annoying people that isnt possible my nigga. first of all i dont even talk to anybody in there so no one can tell u anything about me. ill put it like this jw is cool, eddie lee is cool, so is that nigga bahn, arturo and norman. i cant speak for anyone else really. i will tell you that the fat gay nigga who plays 3s is really fuckin annoying. always running his mouth and calling people garbage. its funny how 3s is the only game he is supposedly good at and is the only game he plays and he never placed anywhere that matters. one time i asked eddie lee about some ibuki strats and he started to explain to me and just said fuck it ill show you. he put in his quarter and beat the fat nigga for free. the fat nigga was actually complaining about eddie playing him too. what a faggot. its nice putting people who cant play in unblockables, but when a real nigga plays him he all of a sudden is out of money. fuckin faggot.

Not trying to be disrespectful or anything but, from a marketing perspective, your questions are too biased.

You should ask in the lines of “do top players mae you more, less or equally interested in participating in the tourneys”.

In this way the prospect would no knpow your personal impression of the problem, hence not being influenced by it.

I did not read the entire thread yet, but I will. I am in a little bot of hurry, but I hope this tidbit may be helpful in some other time. Good luck!

  1. What is it that you do not like about CTF tournaments?

dunno what CTF means. but tourneys as a whole…i’ve never been in 1. just comp over other peoples homes. so i guess since i’ll start competing this year that i’ll be able 2 answer that later.

  2. Does players such as Justin (Marvelous) and Santhrax ward you away from playing MVC2 or CVS2?

nah, that makes me wanna play more b/c even if i dont win i wanna c how well i do against him. to compete again & again. that’s how u get better. playing better people.

  3. Do you feel cheated or ripped off by some of these tournaments?

    N/A…never been in 1 yet.

  4. What concerns in terms of environment are you not please with when you come around CTF tournaments?

i guess just to make newcommers feel welcome or @ home b/c the top tier players will most likely feel this way anyway. but 2 definitely make newcommers come in & feel welcome.

  5. If things were to change for the better based on the publics request, would you then be incline to bring other fighting game players to participate in the tournaments?

yeah. cuz i gotta friend who’s damn good w/ kyo but is kinda afraid of the whole “tourney” thing b/c of being a newcommer & we all know how it feels 2 be the “new guy” in the arcade(tourney or not)

  6. Does money games hold an significant impact on the way tournaments entertain? And if yes, why?

i guess it wouldnt matter. money or no. just make sure it’s on tape with the best quality available

  7. Do Top teir players take incentive away to get into the games at CTF? IF so, would you like to see it stopped and why?

    N/A

  8. Does bonuses make a difference in your decision to attend these tournaments?

    N/A

  9. Do you feel that better time arrangements or day would be better to host CTF tournament rather than Fridays and Saturdays?

well probably friday night so school & work would be over & then saturday & sunday.

  10. If you have any other issues or random complaints that were not asked in question here, please state them now.

    I guess none right now.

From a semi-casual player-

As somebody said above:
(A) The players are getting older, and younger players aren’t getting into 2D games
(B) The games are getting older, and people want to play newer games.
It’s pretty much dead already.

Not really. I supose I’d go anyway.

Not really. Obviously you don’t want to pay more than $4-5 to enter. Everybody wants a larger prize, but it’s not essential to have one.

As I said above, the arcade itself can’t do anything about it. The players need to do something about it. I guess the easiest way would be to just accept the newer games and play them competitively. If you can’t beat 'em, join 'em. Newer games are popular with the majority of people to begin with. And having the hardcore playing new games again would probably encourage the manufacturers to make the games deeper. It’s a win-win situation.

~Born to Play~

Thank you for your imput, it is greatly appreciate. However I would like to point out an aspect of the original post. Fortunately for the sake of CTF gaming community the post was never aimed at marketing. The purpose of the thread was to identify the problems that are CTF, address them, give a venue for “low teir to top teir” to voice their opinions about CTF. That is all that the thread was created for. Most of the questions come directly from the angel of what is it that do not like and what significance does certain aspects of the tournaments held in CTF have.

This thread is not limited to any one set or specific type of competitor or casual fighting gamer. Anyone who has knowledge or experiences in which they want to share about CTF please answer the 9 question and in the 10th question place any other issues that you would like to address that was not asked, that I could have neglected to put. Thank you for your time. Until then.

  1. MvC2 yes. CvS2 no. Too much abusable stuff in MvC2.
  2. yes. stacked matchups and home rules are to blame. at a CvS2 tourney i said i was just starting to play the game and the guy putting together the matchups pitted me agains himself so he’d get a free win. another tourney i went to wouldnt let me use my saturn adapter on their dreamcast cause they used an illegal copy and had to keep swapping disks every time i wanted to plug in my controller.
  3. sure.
  4. perhaps. people get too serious and mad when money’s involved.
  5. no

I know what fat guy you talking about. My bro don,t like him but i got no problem with him. I faced him before in st3 and i beat him. I don,t like to go to china town anymore because alot of people there stink and i don,t like to play arcades. It gets really boring there too.

I hoped they have a mortal kombat deadly allaince tornament but they never did. You tfgm probbaly seen in me in the tornament 5 tornament at empire arcadia. Well i probbaly go back to ctf but not in a while.

I understand. What I meant is that the less biased you can make the questions, the more accurate the answers will be. I am also not very good at it yet, and I meant marketing as in “dealing with the market/customers”.

It is just that we have to help ourselves in the community. This thread is a great idea

~Born to Play~

To Capcom Fan, I hope to see you at CTF when you start coming. By the end of the year we will have some answers that will help provide better tournament environments and entertainment.

To Megafighter, No offense taken, just giving reasons why I type the way I type online. I am going to start giving suggestions on what we can do, and watch out for you guys opinions. Also others have made comments on another board on SRK about this very same topic, maybe you guys would like to take a peek. Go to Tournament and Events and look for “Cleaning Up China Town Fair.”

Until then.
