This shit is funny. I used to go to CF all the time, and I gotta say that I agree that most niggas there are pretty cool. I never talked too much when I went (cause I’m not one of those groupie niggas, and believe me, they’re there), but when I did say shit, for the most part, niggas were cool. Justin was cool as shit, Sanford was a little crazy, but cool as shit. Same goes for pretty much all the regulars that I interacted with like Omar, that one nigga with the Roll-> super Sagat, the bummy white guy that used Ken (I think?) and everybody else for the most part.
That fat nigga is a fucking faggot though. He would have this smug attitude all the time when he was beasitng on people that were clearly trash and a half, but he would hop on Justin’s dick so quick whenever the nigga walked in. It was funny becuase that nigga Wong had a girl at the time (I don’t know if he still does), but this fat fuck would be all up in Justin’s grill quicker than his girl would. Nuthugging faggot. It was funny because I would fuck the nigga up in CvS2 (the only game I played there), but he would still talk shit. He even had some faggot ass friend there that would talk shit every time I beat them. Too good
I never got into the arcade beef, like some other NYC players did at the time, but I would seriously rock that nigga if we were anyplace but an arcade (cuz fighting over a game would just take me to a level of lame that I don’t wanna be at).
What does this have to do with the topic? I have no idea, I’m just co-signing on the homosexuality of that fat guy really.
i feel you about fightin over a game my nigga. everytime i went there with my niggas they wanted to rob that fat nigga off gp just cause he smell funny. i dont understand how niggas can go to school then wake up and go to the arcade for 12 hours. everyday. i could imagine what this nigga does on his spare time. im sure this nigga havoc and anyone else who seen or smelled this nigga knows that he dosent get any ass from any girls, unless hes paying for it. on some real i went to a console tournament these niggas had in brooklyn and the bitch i rolled wit over there even said the shit in front of him and his mans after she heard his voice. she said “yo is that nigga gay”. i couldnt stop laughing my nigga
In my opinion there are a few problems with the gaming scene at Chinatown Fair.
The number one problem , i think, is the players mentality. I have come to the conclusion after many weeks of watching people fight that hardly anyone plays to get better anymore. People are just playing to win the match and nothing more. Before I go on I just want to say that I have no problem with top tier characters. Actually I would suggest that every one should at least learn one top tier character and use that character on your team. But for the love of God, know that they have more than just standing or crouching fierce. Most people who use top tier use the same damn move over and over again to the point where watching the match is just so flippin boring. There is no way in hell you people will get any better until you start using all six buttons. I think that is one major reason why the gaming scene is dying, because everyone knows that they are going to see the same damn thing when they come to watch a tourny. I can easily sit back and use my characters best moves to win but I have enough respect for the person im fighting, even if they are not that good, to give them a good fight not filled with cheesiness. But on the flip side sometimes you have to simplify your strategy to win , but at least use your characters to their full potential. People, please play to get better and not just to win, because once you do the gaming scene will definetly get better.
I also think that sportsmenship is another big problem with the scene. I know that not eveyone is a people person, but if you do beat someone at least say good game or give them the nod of approval, especially if that person is no where near as good as you are. And if you can, share with them strategies so they can improve their game. This makes people want to come back and play, and plus i believe with a little help everyone has potential to become above average players. The gaming scene wont grow unless everyone grows with it.
Finally, tournaments. I thinks players should bring more people with them to the tournaments even if the person is just there to watch. The bigger the crowed, the more hype shit is going to get. We need more players from all around to come because we really need some variety at the tournaments. So start inviting people from way early to enter in the tournys, but for that to happen we need to know about to tournys early. Posting them on SRK is good but not everyone has access or checks it all the time. Make flyers and put them in CTF, that way it will be a constant reminder that a tourny is coming and give people more time to prepare and invite people. We can make this shit happen.
I am not sure, but I am just going to make the assumption that this is Omar from Texas (Who is now in NYC only). Reading what you said, I can completely agree with you but the problem is with that, is that no one likes losing, and it isn’t about sportsmanship. Its all about winning, and when a Champion takes place, it doesn’t matter to him or her how they won, so long as they won. It takes a lot of humilty to renounce your winning if you know that you did it in an unfair manner. The community itself, allows cracks, breaks, and cheap stuff like role canceling, and unblockables. They like it. Thus you are going to always see it. Players both good and bad will learn how to break and do what it takes to win. Then to justify it they will say, “Hey, it adds depth to the game.”
At this present moment in this “Particular” community nothing can be done. Something about that can only be done from the higher ups in this community. However seeing that this topic is based only on CTF, that is something worth noting. A tournament with out breaks or cracks. No unblockables, no role cancelling. This would be good to announce because it would show who would play in a tournament as such. So here is question 11.
Would you play in a tournament that removed breaks or cracks in it?
I prefer a regular tourney (then again I don’t play at CTF, so who cares?).
The main issue I see about a tourney banning unblockables or RCs is that is very hard to judge it. How do you knwo for sure if teh player is not using any RCs? And how do you know a specific unblockable was not just an attempt for regular c.HP? It seems very hard to control.
Other than that, I think that unusual formats might be a fun idea, as long as you keep doing some regular tourneys as well.
You could do something like an amateur tourney, no money and no top players allowed. Do the real tourney at machine 1 and the amateur at machine 2. The amateur champ must go on to the pros tourney at the next time…
Tri-Force, you are absolutely right about winning is just winning. This I have realized a long time ago. I have this constant struggle with myself whether I should play just to win, or to give the crowd something new and refreshing to see. I know for a fact that I can win just using either top tier, or doing the least amount of work and just running away the whole time like other people do, but the problem with that is it’s fucking gay. But like you said winning is winning right? It doesn’t matter how a champion wins as long as he or she wins. It just blows my mind that people can’t see that their lame strategies will only take them so far. There will always be someone out there who is better and can dethrone them. To answer your question, I dont really care about roll cancelling and breaks in the game. I think it adds a litte spice to the game, but I hate it when people make glitches and breaks their crutch. When I fight people like that it honestly makes me feel pity for them because I know that they wont get any better that way. I know that the top players all around roll cancel, but I also know that they know how to fight, so it doesn’t bother me as much. Although Justin’s and Eddie Lee’s styles annoy the shit out of me, I respect them because they dont depend on roll cancel to win. I’m not saying that I don’t respect the other players at CTF because I respect them all, but I was just using that as an example. All the top players at CTF can fight their asses off, so I hope you understand what I mean. Maybe one day when I decide to get serious I will just play to win, but until then, I will fight to become better, and someday,to be the best.
The only way we’d be able to play a game without glitches is if Capcom would go ahead and release a universal patch or if we as gamers somehow hack in and patch it ourselves. I don’t see either happenning because they’d have to recall and people would complain that machines aren’t universal. The lazy players would then whine that RC is part of the game or some other overpowered shit they’re using as a crutch is ‘skillful’ and without it the game is ‘boring’.
Theres no point in releasing a 2d fighting game anymore because the community is full of whiners that really don’t want to play anything. Even if you release a fun or playable game it’ll die out. If you release a crappy game it makes you about the same amount of money as a good game. So why bother?
I don’t think CTF is all about winning only, at least during the casual periods I’ve ever been there (Friday nights). I see a pretty good range of characters.
I really don’t think the problem is CTF. The problem is that there are no other arcades. It used to be that you’d train at a local arcade, then go to CTF once a week or so, learn new stuff and test yourself. Then you’d bring that back to your local arcade. Now theres only one source of competition and there really no longer is varying levels of skill at different places. Its like if you just played an All Star game in the NBA and you simply just cut all the teams. Now all you’ve got are the two all-star teams, you can’t add new players because they can’t compete and it’s hard to practice, and everyone gets bored because thats all they see.
Face it, the scene is dying and theres no way to ever revive it. Just give up and let it die. Nothing good lasts forever. Just hope that online capabilities progress to the point that we can play without lag, so that we can just play the old games. It won’t be the same as tournaments, but thats the only thing left aside from it just dying completely.
i felt like answering questions posted by TFGM ( a little late I know but nonetheless)
1.I don’t like using 10 dollars to enter the tournament AND then paying more tokens. What if someone only had 11 dollars? they’d be so screwed (if they got up to finals). Plus…10 dollars could be used for casuals instead. That’s like 20 matches instead of say 3.
No I like playing Justin to see his skill.
No, just not worthy of these tournaments.
None really…except maybe crazy ppl that overreact to losing.
Nah.
Money games tend to make ppl play seriously so I suppose. But I like seeing ppl that play for the fun of it.
Nah I wouldn’t stop top tier players from playing. That’d be unfair because it’s discrimination for their skill.
No I never pay attention to the money because I know I can’t win.
Fridays and Saturdays are the best days to have tournaments.
The reason why I don’t enter your tournaments is because I’m still not good enough and I think many people feel that way. There are only a select few that are good enough to compete in your tournaments. I tried entering one of your tournaments once…waaaay back. I was still a bad scrub so I lost pretty bad. I’ve gotten way better but I still cannot compare to players like Omar or Justin or Nick T etc. I feel defeated before I come into the arcade. So instead of using 10 dollars to enter a tournament I’ll lose fast, I’d rather play a lot of casuals. Really, if I could have a tense match in the tournament where it comes down to a tiny bit of life, then i’d enter it in a heartbeat. But maybe…someday I’ll enter it again after I’ve gotten better.
And this problem is not only in NYC is simply everywhere, scene is going nowhere until the hardcore gamers move to new games or new people join the community.
And yeah, I’m nearly 30, finishin my masters degree and working, also I have a social life.
Just don’t expect people to go to the arcade every day of the week.
Im not going to pay 10 bucks to get raped by CTF’s elite in cvs2. 5 bucks or less is reasonable. I could use that 10 bucks to play casual 3s and ST or cvs2.
i agree. the street fighter players are usually old school gamers that are pretty much are adults now and yes. i think they have more thinks on their mind than video games. the best way to up rise the scene again is somehow make street fighter mainstream again with the youth.
God, I really don’t want to seem like just an infomercial person, but…
points to sig
I tried to post about Major League Gaming in here once, but I don’t think anybody replied. So here’s the score.
Basically MLG is an all console video game tournament league. They have sponsorships with companies like Nokia (15,000 dollars for winning N-Gage National Tournaments), Converse (FREE SHOES FOR ALL), exedra.
They usually have at least 10,000 dollars to drop on a tournament, usually more. Thus, each game gets about 2500 to screw around with.
And they added Super Smash Brothers Melee midseason because everybody wanted it. So if you want a resurgence in TOURNAMENT gaming, then maybe showing support here and having MLG put it on the lineup is a good way to start.
Again, sorry if I seem like an infomercial guy, but hell, -I- want CvS2, SF3, and other SF games on MLG, but if there’s no support, they won’t bother.
Yeah that’s exactly what I think. I could use that 10 bucks man! Tournaments are now just for show…to watch the best players and the rest of us sit back and relax.
How come SF peeps aren’t eating this shit up?? It’s a console players game now (like it or not) so why not join the masses and cash in on an already established tournament scene?
Just sound slike a really good and obvious idea to me… ?
Anyways, telling the tourney organizer that you’re a noob at the game gives you no excuse that you just got beasted on. Chances are, you’d get beasted anyways. And you don’t want to end up with uneven trees. I mean, what do you think Justin or Sanford or anyone would think if they had to play against each other in first round, and somehow, the winner ends up playing a complete noob in the finals, because all the better competitors were eliminated by each other in early rounds?
If you’re going to play in a tourney, you should be confident in your skills, or looking to improve them by playing & watching. You shouldn’t be looking for handouts.
People just don’t play in tourneys because they’re scared of losing. And the ones who do play are the ones that realize that a loss teaches you more than a win does. But… with today’s instant gratification generation, they just don’t realize that. shrug Change their mentality, and you’ll change the scene.
A lot of ppl are still learning to improve their skill and I suppose we just want to bide our time. It’s kind of stupid to just rush in with a few skills that won’t save you. Oh yeah it kinda sucked that the CF tournament got canceled. I wanted to see it but at least I got to play some people.
