I’m surprised no one has mentioned King of Fighters 12 yet. I think it’s safe to say that it’s the last one from SNK. No fan support, poor support from SNK, low revenues, a lot of hard work, and i’m sure it’s resting in peace in video game heaven.
Yeah it’s just plain obvious that a lot of people that work at Capcom now weren’t around or just weren’t playing SF during the glory days or anytime after and see the game as tired and risky. That’s the only way 66 percent of Capcom would be against something as legendary as SF. They see it as old news and can’t relate to it seeing most of them don’t work on fighting games in the first place.
To us SF makes more sense than more than half the people that work at Capcom. While that seems sad, (and it is) when you think about it it makes 100 percent sense. Ono already mentioned before the game came out that he had to go through the Eliminator on American Gladiators just for anyone at Capcom to accept SFIV as a concept. Most of Capcom’s team has gotten past or never went through the “SF era” and most of Capcom’s development team is centered around game genres that typically are more popular on consoles. It’s hard to see the hype when most of your peers have never really worked on or played a SF game to begin with.
KOFXII…it’s sad to say but it did worse than I thought it would. I’ve heard through the grapevine that Japanese KOF players have already given up on the game and are mainly focused on 2k2 now (which is probably a better game any ways). It’s got way more characters and 2k2 was popular for a KOF game during its heyday. I think SFIV also killed any chance of that game being successful. Maybe the Japanese are just waiting for a more complete release but either way the reception for the game has seemed to be poor at both the arcades and the consoles. Especially considering the console version still has a pretty much inoperable online capability.
I get what you are saying, but even if that is the case, and it probably is, it still is a ridiculous statement.
Maybe before they released HDR or SFIV I could understand being hesitant about getting back into fighters, but now…
I would be interested in knowing how many HD console games sold 3+ mill this year. Four or five?
HRD was the fastest selling arcade release. MvC2 sells better than HDR, and SFIV sold very well. Not even mentioning how successful the SFIV accessories were/are and money they get from costumes.
And they still need to see how they preform? Are you fucking kidding me?
Maybe they were working on Dash and found out it was too powerful for current hardware sorta like ggpo…HD games sell like shit in Japan. I thought they understood that when they released Dead Rising.
That’s just how blind people can be. A lot of people at Capcom just don’t understand fighting games. If they did they would have brought out SFIV a long F’n time ago. Yet…a lot of the team was past SF after CVS2 and it pretty much never crossed their minds. Especially considering a lot of their team from 2k2 to present are hires that probably barely play SF in the arcades and defintely work on genres that are outside of fighting games.
I’m sure there are people at Capcom who aren’t even trying to see if it will work. That’s how unsure/unforgiving they are of this fighting game renaissance. They’ve heard about SF crashing and burning in the past and don’t want a repeat. To them it’s like trying to bring back Duke Nukem. Yeah…Duke probably would be a success the first reinvention if marketed right but after that you can imagine people would be scared about trying to keep the game interesting for sequels.
If you can’t relate to fighting games it’s hard to see why they would work…even with strong sales. Strong sales just means people caught on to the hype, but most of Capcom just isn’t about fighting games and they’re probably still scratching their heads wondering how SFIV even got off in the first place. Especially with all of the kids whining about this and that about the game. They’re probably having a hard time seeing the replay value in a game that’s so competitive and has little replay value outside of playing online. They probably also see the 2d aspect of the game as limited.
I guess more than 66% of capcom are working on different games (resident evil, lost planet, devil may cry, bionic commando, some download stuff) anyway, so some of them want more SF, too.
capcom needs to bring something new to the table with dash to ensure the magazine/internet reviews are peachy. Mags/sites already like the franchise, they want to back it but won’t unless it sets itself apart from IV. If it just scores an slew of 8’s its not gonna get casuals to buy the game again. It needs double the characters and a graphics overhaul for casuals to care and mags to give it 9’s. IMO. That’s a lot of work, all we want is balance changes and a few new characters, but what we want isn’t enough
What is their best selling game this gen? Probably RE5. Think it sold around 5m copies. It surely had to cost a great deal more to make than SFIV. They also aren’t making money off accessories and downloads (assuming there is no dlc for the game). I wouldn’t be surprised if the money made off both games is really close, or slightly in favor of SFIV.
And taking that into account we have to prove to Capcom that we really want another one…???Really? Monkeys must be running that company.
Dash would cost a fraction to develop in comparison to SFIV. It will most likely sell less than SFIV, but it is still guaranteed to make money.
IDK…kind of bang your head against a brick wall frustrating. If Dash really isn’t in development, and they decided not to update arcade to console…wow
Capcom just doesn’t see the light in fighting games. They just don’t. SFIV taking this long to be released is a huge testament to that. To them it’s just stuff they read about in history books and don’t see a great future in it. To them it’s like bringing back the Jackie Chan “Runble in the Bronx” era of Kung Fu movies. Fighting games are basically black people in the 50’s and 60’s. Being held down and looked upon as primitive. Save SF so you can save the blacks!
bionic commando? BIONIC COMMANDO? BIFUCKINONIC COMFUCKINANDO? THAT OVER SF4???:arazz:
If they really are working on bionic commando, maybe we should all return our copies of SF4 and tell all the game reviewers to re-review it as crap.
Truthfully, I just don’t see what capcom can be doing besides SF Dash. they said that if they did another resident evil, it would be a complete reboot and it would take a good 4-8 years. DMC is plausible. Lost Planet 2 should be nearly finished. Maybe they’re planning a bunch of ports for XBLA or PSN.
The only things they have to do is really finish whatever DMC they’re making, if they’re making one, port a bunch of games, and making some DLC for existing games. Then they can probably all take 4 year vacations, come back, and work on RE6.
They could take a look at the Evo 2009 showing, and the viewing figures for the online stream. It’s 7 months after console release and people are still playing every other day and asking for more.
Dark Ressurrection was a great success for Tekken, but casuals aren’t ever gonna understand why they should pour out another full price for the same engine that’s slightly adjusted around the edges. They want Tekken 6, brand new, flashier engine custom built to be better than ever and all that crap.
Capcom just needs to trust that the committed audience for tweaked versions can stand it on its own feet; and it should be obvious. Flowchart Ken’s didn’t build the Street Fighter 2 legacy.
Established committed audiences to these fighting games dwindle when you do something Tekken 4 or SF3 style and stray too far from what people enjoyed about the game in order to be seen as radically innovative or to target players deterred by the current formula. They’ll be happy to come back to the series when they hear you’ve learned your lesson.
Have to accept fighting games are a much different breed to most other genres.
Its old news but I heard that if SFIV did well enough they would make a sequel. I mean, they could stop it at SFIV but it has such a large fanbase they’d be crazy to stop it. Plus, I’d like to see them bridge the stories from the SFII/SFIV saga into SFIII. But that’s just me. But who knows what will happen?
Don’t worry, there’s going to be a Super mega ultra turbo remix version soon enough.
Would be nice if they include SF3 characters. Elena/Dudley/Q/Ibuki are the first names that come to mind.
A sequel will happen. I’m sure only 10 percent of Capcom was accepting of SFIV when it was brought into fruition but only 10 percent of Capcom was probably working on SFIV any ways. You don’t need anything near 100 percent of Capcom to accept SFIV for a sequel to be in the works. The fans and sales speak for themselves. I mean shit who knows how much of Capcom thinks continuing Mega Man is a great idea. Obviously 99.9 percent of Capcom is certain Onimusha is done and I was done with the game after about 2 games myself.
