I wondered the same thing, so I actually went and listened to what Ono himself said and I came up with the same translation.
Ono: ???66%???Capcom?66%???
Ono: Um…there’s still about 66% who are opposed… 66% of Capcom still thinks its a bad idea, so for those of you who think “It’d be nice to have another game”, please continue sending your applause to them.
The language he uses makes it fairly clear he’s talking about the here and now, and not before the game was made.
I went back and listened also thinking it may have been a mistranslation, but I don’t think it was.
Ono says very clearly in Japanese that 66% are STILL opposed to the idea.
If SF had the popularity/casual appeal of the Tekken franchise, we probably would see an arcade update in the next 6 months. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. It is unlikely that we will get anything new in the near future.
Why do people on this forum, and others keep saying there’s a patch coming out or SF4 Dash will be coming out, when all evidence points to the contrary?
Ono said they don’t have the funding for a patch, how are they gonna get funding for a new game?
66 percent… Wow, Capcom better not quit on Street Fighter. For a series that generates so much hype and excitement for as long as its been around, why in the world would 66% not want to continue the series? Street Fighter 4 completely sold out the first day it was released on Japan as you well know so i don’t believe sales or money is a problem at all. It just confuses me.
How well does SF4 do in the Japanese arcades? Last time I heard (couple months ago) was that it ranked #8. That’s pretty sad when newer and older fighting games outrank it. Could this be why Capcom don’t think it’s such a good idea to continue SF…?
But if anything they need some mechanic changes if they ever do a Dash. The game rewards defense a little too much in a lot of cases. Sometimes I cry of boredom when I watch japanese players use brickhouse characters (blanka, honda, rog, etc), and especially brickhouse vs brickhouse match ups. No one ever wants to attack because it’s risky and it seems like your at a disadvantage even though both players want a life lead, so they can run away and turtle the rest of the round.
I want SFIV Dash so I don’t have to keep watching trade into ultra and zero-risk uppercut FADCs (which, of course, can also go into ultra) for the next ten years, plz.
Well you have to understand that Capcom is just like any other gaming company, they want to make as much money as possible.
When you have SF4 that sold just under 3 million copies to date (which yes, is good for a fighting game in the time it has been out), then compare that to Resident Evil 5 that sold over 4 million in ONE MONTH, you see that they rather spend time making money creating other games, than SF4.
It’s not that they don’t like SF4, but they like to make money and they rather spend their resources with games that are more top-sellers than a medium seller. Basic economics.
There’s no ambiguity in this…it’s plain obvious that Capcom isn’t the same Capcom it was years ago and they are clearly concerned about continuing such an old series. A lot of the development team doesn’t work on fighting games anymore and they have their own reasons or otherwise blindly believe that SF is not worth the effort. They don’t want a repeat of the past and for that I understand, but I believe the future for SF will be good for both Capcom and its fans if things are marketed the right way. Tekken and Soul Calibur still make plenty of money and have loyal fans on both consoles so there’s no reason to not continue SF either.
That’s why I hate sanwa sticks sometimes. They should invent one that has lasers that way it’s not as annoying as an optical mouse.
Like, in the heat of the moment its hard for me, and I’m sure other new guys to perform motions in exact precision since you are pretty anxious to get out your attack. It’s like you have to have delicate little japanese hands to use these things properly.
It took me a while to figure out how small a motion I could make in order to do a half circle, and even now I still mess it up on ocassion in the heat of the moment cuz I rush it.
I think new players should teach themselves to play more relaxed. I use to think that in games like Mvc2 and GG, people had to do all that shit really rapidily, and tap everything extra fast. Except when I see videos of these pros they are so delicate, and shit. The reason for this is what you see on the screen doesn’t really match what you’re doing with your hands if you know what I mean. Like a combo that looks insanely fast can be pulled off by slow delicate precise motions.
This actually is starting to remind me of how sanwa sticks are like high dpi mouses for fps games.
You think SFIV cost anywhere near what RE5 did to develop? Was part of RE5’s dev cost offset by income from arcades? Was part of RE5’s dev cost offset by income made off periferials? Did Capcom make money off the downloadable costumes in RE5?
Mind cluing everyone in on what patch/re-release version of RE5 is guaranteed to bring in another boat load of money for Capcom?
I don’t see how that’s a problem. Big patch release date with all of the data for the new characters, but the only way to play them is to pay extra and download the ‘key’ DLC. That way, the biggest issue is people bitching that they don’t get to play the characters that are wailing on them, if they haven’t bought the DLC yet.
Not like the RE dev team will be working on SF…just because one project makes twice more than another project doesnt mean they could scrap it… thats why the have many dev teams.
or they can just keep one dev team and release RE only games bc it makes alot of money but release nothing else…every 2-3 years…and fire everyone else… make sense to me.
I have even heard sagat/ryu/boxer players ask for more shit…as if you could really give those characters more without breaking them horribly.
On the real, I think that if Capcom is really second guessing another SF game, its because the gamer market has really changed. People have shorter attention spans, deeper wallets, and they all want to be gods with no real work put in.
FPS games have convinced people that anyone with a pulse can dominate online (thanks regenerating health bar!)…and most of those people are NOT going to spend the few YEARS it takes to get even halfway good at street fighter.
If there is any doubt about the financial success of another street fighter at capcom, it has to be because they are doing the math versus the “instant gratification” games that seem to rule the current market.
Even the new Batman…the fighting mechanics are so simple its almost a joke. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the game and its fun as shit to beat the crap out of joker henchmen in like 1000 different ways (each more painful than the last)…but the mechanics are a joke: One main attack button, one parry button, one stun button (which is just another attack that can’t combo).
That is it. That is what “fighting mechanics” are like for today’s audience…and as long as things are this way…I don’t see how games like street fighter are going to ever see real mainstream support.
