[6/6/09] SF4 Team Tournament @ UCD (3vs3)

[6/6/09] UC Davis (Davis, CA) SF4 Team Tournament (3vs3)

When/Where: UCD Memorial Unions Games Area (bowling and pool as well) on 6/6/09

Games Played: Street Fighter 4 Main Event

Sign Up Time: 12:30 PM Casuals Start, matches start 2:00 PM

Entry Fee: $20 per team (3-man), covers entry fee, venue fee and pot (17$ towards prize pot)

Prize Setup: 70%/20%/10% with 300 bonus tokens to winning team

Format:
SF4: Double Elimination, 3-man teams, NO SAME CHARACTERS PER TEAM

Note: You cannot have two or three members of the same team, playing the same character. No triple sagat bullshit. SBO Style.

For those unfamiliar with team tournaments, you face off against a team and the winner stays and the loser switches out with a team member until the entire team is defeated. So as an example:

Team A (a,b,c)
Team B (x,y,z)

Team A tells third party we’ll play our Boxer
Team B tells third party they’ll play their Ryu

Team A plays boxer
Team B plays ryu
Ryu beats Boxer
Team A plays either player b or player c
Ryu over player b
Team A plays player c
Ryu over player c

Team B wins and moves on

The losing team can choose whoever they want to play so positions 2 and 3 on the team are very dynamic. That was there’s a tiny bit of strategy involved instead of pure luck where your zangief and then honda both go up against a sagat right off the bat (hypothetical of course, fuck you mark).
Game Setup:

  1. Twin Head to Head Cabinets, Sanwa Buttons, Korean Sticks
  2. PS3 SF4 CRT TV Console Setup
  3. PS3 SF4 CRT TV Console Setup

This time around, you play on whatever setup you’re given. There’s no “I can’t use these sticks” crying.

Rules: 3vs3 ocv style, no console characters, pausing is a judge discretion dq, 2 out of 3 rounds. You must play the character you sign up with since it is a team tournament.

We’re planning to record matches and post them up, so if you don’t want your name on youtube, you better say so. There’s going to be at least 4 teams from Davis alone, but we’d like to see more competitors from around the area. Last time we ran a 64 man bracket and we’re hoping for the same turn-out this time around with 16+ teams.

For more information, go ahead and send me PM’s or direct them to the UC Davis MUGA thread here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthre...wpost&t=130166

Hope to see some faces from Fudrucker’s with some good revenge matches :P.

-Matt (e.honda)

awesome.

Good shit Matt. Also post on other threads (San Jose, Sac, etc.) just in case people miss this thread. And one more thing when teams sign up, each member has to register what character they will be using, and they have to use that character for the entire tournament.

For example, if I sign up to play Guile I can’t select Boxer when I go up against Blanka. This is to ensure no counterpicking occurs. And remember teams can choose the order they play in. It doesn’t have to stay constant throughout for each round played.

no counter picking eh… den i guess im going for Zangief/Sagat/Ryu.

imo for the credibility of the tournament i believe you guys should either commit to no console characters, or all console characters. seems biased when you change the rules for specific people, and use judgement (opinions?) on who is competent enough to warrant using console characters.

plus you give these console character players the advantage of deciding where the match takes place (console, on their own sticks without compromise)

just my $.02. keep it as consistent as possible to maintain credibility.

No console characters so no drama. Period.

Just want to give a shout out to Pieguy and the rest of UCD guys for stepping it up these past few months in terms of tournaments at UCD. It takes a strong and dedicated community in order for a team oriented gathering to happen.

I’m really proud of all of the regulars, including Magus02, LPN, and the rest of the NorCal guys in creating a dedicated community base here in NorCal. To be honest, I thought it would never even get to this point at all.

So yeah, keep up the good work guys. Even though life is busy for me nowadays, I really want to be a part of this awesome SF community here in NorCal!!!

( Sigh, going to Korea/Japan in 10 days, so I won’t be able to make any tournaments for awhile ) I’ll try to beat Poongyo and record videos

Best regards.

I am really confused by this decision to use console characters. Not to be a dick, but if Allen wants to play Cammy he can go to Fuddruckers.

There are 17 nonconsole characters, your team should be able to pick three of them. If you can’t, then pick new teammates.

Popo, have fun in japanorea.

First of all, shout out to Popo for kicking my ass that one tournament, that was one of my most bittersweet defeats. I’ll remember that one for a LONG time, but I admire your gameplay, cuz it’s mad dedication and commitment to your style of play, and that in itself deserves mad respect.

Second of all, I’m gonna surprise sex you bitches when I see you at this tournament. You’ve been warned. Especially you Jack… and Korea… BWAHAHAHA :rofl::rofl:

well…

1)i am going to fuddruckers

  1. i have been going to muga tournies and using sagat without complaining (other than the joking around)

  2. just as an idea, if you’re worried about too many people using console chars for the tourney, we can have people post their teams/char in the thread before the tourney. that way you guys can judge whether or not console chars will be a problem. (also a nice way to hype up the tourney…seeing lineup and all)

  3. won’t know if i can make the tourney or not till next week anyways. whether or not you allow console, i will be attending if i have the day off.

5)popo, you cheat. beat korea/jpn with that hacked guile.

if i go i will try and get ramin and eph to come out.

three persians on one team, madness.

I was simply using you as an example, since matt decided to name drop. I haven’t heard you complain, I’ve had other people complain on your behalf. I was asked umpteenth number of times last week about whether or not you could use cammy.

I honestly think that adding console characters into the mix will complicate way too many things, and make having an arcade cabinet pointless. There are plenty of console tourney’s, fuddruckers, droms, munchies, sac, random get togethers, etc. I think having an arcade character exclusive tourney at an arcade makes sense. But I don’t see how gauging interest with a poll or something could hurt (matt get on it).

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it, as I have clinical’s that day, so Marty might need some help during setup.

…what? WHAT? that sounds a little…

RETARDED

So who decides who’s competent? Does competent mean you play at Muga? Seriously guys, I’d expect this from some gamepad scrubs running shit in their garage.

Really now, playing favorites? At a tourney? I mean, it’s bad enough you forced all the finalists last time to play on your cab instead of being able to use their own sticks when consoles were 3 feet away. Just because it’s your home court doesn’t mean your players should have every advantage possible

:nono: Not trying to flame, I’m just shocked that you guys would be trying to ban characters for some people and not for others. I really thought you guys would be better than that, that’s some scrub shit.

Play the game, have legitimate, even chances for all competitors, do you guys really need to rely on making people play on your sticks and with your choice of characters to stand a chance? No console charecters is one thing, picking and choosing who can use a console charecter is rediculous!:looney:

I remember a time where fairness for all competitors was required in a tourney…

Please, please prove me wrong, so me that your better than that. If you guys win the tourney, win it because of your skill, not because of the rules favoring Muga regulars. I love Korean sticks as much as you guys, but I wouldn’t force someone to play on one at a tourney with consoles 3 feet away. Either everyone can choose between console or cab or noone should be able to. I don’t know why that’s even an issue, it really shouldn’t be. Not when people are paying money to enter what is supposed to be a Fair Tournament.

on their behalf…

i believe they originally wanted to keep the tourney as “arcade style” as possible since they were one of the few places that took time and money to invest in the arcade. (maybe it’s more than just that, but that’s afaik)

i’m sure matt mentioned me out of pity(maybe i’m using the wrong term here). but they know i main a console char, and yet i come out to show my support for scene. i think their intentions was less on the line of favortism, but more for giving something back. i dont’ think matt thought any deeper than that. and i think you just misinterpreted their intentions.

i liked mark’s argument tho. console should be allowed or banned with no exceptions. it’s too much of a fine line to judge whether someone is competent with a char or not.

We’d love to have six SFIV cabinets and make everyone play on those, but unfortunately this isn’t the land of chocolate and unicorns

And I’m pretty sure anyone who would pick a console character as their character for a 3-man team is competent enough. Don’t put words in our mouths, they aren’t delicious at all :nono:

I main a console character too, but I’m not that good with my character. I still have a lot to learn. Aside from arcade style play which is one of the higher priorities, I think Pieguy wants a good tournament so the words came out a little more blunt than what you were expecting HazeandFire.

And I agree with Mark and Allen, either let everyone choose to use console characters or ban them altogether. For the tournament, my opinion is for a ban hammer b/c of trying to keep it arcade perfect (unless there is a giant number of people wanting it otherwise). If it were not team tournaments, it might have been okay to let someone choose a console character on the TV setups and get away with it until top 8 or w/e. It just wouldn’t work in this tournament.

i just realized something.

on the latest patch, zangief’s lariat was nerfed. how does that work out anyways? was it nerfed to a noticeable point where playing gief on arcade is a lot better? do people care? or was the nerf a rumor?

The nerf was a rumor. Lariat still hits crouching on as many hits as possible. The only change was to Fei’s Roundhouse Chicken Wing (longer startup but more invincibility, also breaks the infinite).

examples of complications…and based on the logic, trolling.

I really have no clue what you are talking about with regards to favoritism. Matt made a rather ill advised statement about whether or not too allow console characters and how we could go about implementing it. You jump on him about sticks and favoritism. WTF? Seriously, just quickly browsing the results of other tournies and this one, should dismiss any idea of favoritism or improprieties.

With regards to the finals having to be played on our cabinets. The MUGA is an arcade, if I had it my way I would make everyone play on the cabinet. Knowing that this could take a while, I conceded into allowing consoles in order to speed the tourney up, realizing that some people would complain about sticks, buttons, pads, button mapping, blah blah blah. I stated that the only way that this would happen was if the top 8 played on the cabinets. Why?

A) the screens on this cabinet look a whole hell of a lot better than some shitty 10 year old crt. B) There are two screens, that means the crowd can split into half and more people will be able to watch. C) The sticks and buttons are the same, if anything this fact reduces favoritism and replaces it with skill. D) No accidental unplugging or wireless connection shenanigans. E) Its an arcade.

BTW I despise korean sticks and everyone named korea

I let tournament results speak for themselves. Unless you’re constantly placing top 20% in the tournaments you enter and have the entire character forum of srk nuthugging you like allen (allen you suck), I’m not going to really consider you as a huge contender that really needs a console character preference.

Either way, no console characters now and no console preferences so that stupid drama with people getting offensive at the slightest hint of sarcasm won’t happen.
