Jason Wilson rules! Team Unchi rules all!
Didn’t you say that it wasn’t about numbers? World’s Finest is legendary because of the quality of the players that attended. They were smaller than any local tourney any of the WF players could’ve won for free. Even today, the only recognized players from back then from soca are the ones that played at WF.
Although I say this jokingly, it does seem that even though you all say that it isn’t about numbers, you make it obvious that it truly is. Whether you admit it to yourselves or not, you’ve gone for quantity over quality now.
Seriously, just like WF meant more, FFA will mean the most and be the most respected 3s tourney among the best 3s players. It doesn’t matter if the Evo tourney dwarfs it by sheer numbers. Without the likes of Nintendo and others, Evo wouldn’t be getting bigger like this and deep down, you have to know this. Try doing SF tourneys like this. Nope. The only reason it’s somewhat acceptable now is because other scenes’ tourneys are used to consoles and don’t mind. That’s just forcing SF players to go that route. It wasn’t necessary yet although I do see it as an eventual necessity.
Should’ve tried for both or stuck with arcade. It would’ve been better, in hindsight, to start making or buying cabinets as arcades went out of business. That way the standard could’ve been maintained regardless of the arcade scene. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, heheh.
Come on though, Tom, it is clearly about the numbers. You can just look at the format to know that. It was about numbers last year too. Can’t really hide the actions and they speak louder.
Don’t get me wrong. I still want Evo to be successful if only as the last remnants of what was once a great scene. Too many follow SRK so, if Evo goes away, there may not be anyone to pick it up to take it back to former glory. I’d rather watch it go slowly as it changes to something average even if more ppl attend. Heck, there’s a reason for the word “average.” The more average something is, the more ppl will relate.
I’ll drink to the old school. Tomorrow came too soon, homie.
Apoc.
Apoc, go home, wherever that may be. You’re washed up, a so-called “old-schooler”…more like home-schooled to me. You spew out the same tired ass argument every friggin’ time. Yet when the tourneys happen you are nowhere to be found in placing or at last year’s Evo2k3, you became a cheerleader for Japan–that was quite pathetic. I guess your motto is: “If you can’t beat 'em, suck their dick.” Fresh, guy, fresh. You attempt to make yourself look good by writing responses as long as novels. No need to make posts that long. Here, I’ll sum up all your posts in a few short sentences: Hi, my name is Apoc, I was in Bang The Machine SF documentary and I’m washed up. I complain each and every year, but have lost my greatness. Alas, there will be no more times when I don my hood and pretend to be a rapper/Rocky balboa of video games.
Face it, your kind has come and gone. Console is the future; arcades are dead in the u.s. Sooner or later all tourneys will be online. Get your ass to Japan if you want arcade. But if you did do that, you would be a average scrub over there–at best.
Either adapt or spend the rest of your life copy/paste posts.
You suck, btw.
Are you high?
All of this hate sure has gotten out of hand.
It seems that all sides have been stated, from the obvious, to the real, to the hate that doesn’t make any sense.
The fact is that console 3s isnt the same experience as arcade 3s. So FFA decided to throw a nice big great 3s tournament (BEFORE EVO SO WE DON’T INTERFERE WITH IT) just for the real fans of the game that can actually differentiate between console 3s and arcade 3s. If you can’t differentiate between the two then don’t worry about it this probably affects you in no way.
Our good friends of FFA, aka the japanese, love our arcade. I am always hearing how much KSK and KO miss america and are really looking forward to travelling out here and playing at evo and playing at FFA as well. Where did I hear this? From their own mouths.
Now anyone that knows the japanese personally can comment on this but if you aren’t friends with them and don’t know anything about them I don’t see how you can speak for what they think, that just doesn’t make any sense at all.
IN JAPAN so many 3s players APPROACHED US at SBO and in the arcades everyday wanting to talk to us and share knowledge of the game. Why? Because they were truly impressed by our knowledge and level. Comparable with ST and how the old schoolers did well back when they made their trip.
FFA is already known by japanese players as one of the best 3s places to go to in america, and a place where they can actually find people who are on their level. That’s why this year a lot more 3s specialists are coming out to play the americans.
Even when there isnt a big event we get japanese players coming down for some games. FACT: Conitan (really sick japanese necro) is coming down to FFA this weekend JUN 19/20, for vacation and we’re going to throw a tourney in his honor. I didn’t ask the guy to come to ffa he personally emailed me saying he wanted to do this. Plus a while ago Umezono came down and we threw a tournament for him too. So saying that the japanese are just being polite and don’t consider us any good isn’t a very logical argument.
There is mutual respect between people that play the game at high level and can give each other a challenge. The idea that USA sucks at 3s and will never compare to the japanese is a really old idea and needs to get kicked out the door, times change and the usa’s skill level has changed, realize it.
I can’t wait for this tournament and I can’t wait for evo, I hope both of the events turn out great. We were providing an aspect, like apoc said, that seemed lacking.
Thanks a lot for the people supporting this event. Like I’ve said before this is the place to be to play real arcade perfect 3s on perfect conditions for americans and japanese. Hope to see you all there.
P.S. For all the people hating you guys really don’t make much sense.
Yeah, so the Apoc novella is exactly the kind of BS that’s pretty pointless, but which I’m cursed to endure. Everyone knows Apoc’s opinion twice over – jizzing it (again) all over page 7 of this thread isn’t going to convince anyone of anything.
It appears that everyone except Apoc agrees there are two ways to go: stick with arcades until the bitter (and soon) end, or adapt to consoles and have a scene that is different, but viable long term. It’s GOOD that different majors are going with different options. It means we have all our bases covered, and individual players can choose the tournament that suits them best.
By the same logic, the FFA tournament is a good thing. Die-hards who are absolutely must play in the arcade can arrive a day early and do so. And this doesn’t hurt the console players one bit.
Use your head people. It’s suicide to chain all of SF to an industry which is clearly on its death bed in the US. And it’s lunacy to criticize an extra SF event during the Evo weekend (that doesn’t interfere with Evo itself).
philly backer, WHO ARE YOU? and why do you have so much hate towards apoc and FFA players?
I can’t help it, Tom. It just keeps cumming! I wouldn’t say that you’re cursed. If you think what I say has no merit then it should be no worse than a troll’s rant. Although, I fully admit to venting and going a bit overboard. Expressing opinions more than once(keep in mind I do it around Evo time and not year 'round) happens everyday on SRK. Understand my perspective. If I’m not so into playing, I’ll probably post on issues regarding the scene rather than tactics like I used to. Just consider my rants as me showing that I still care somewhat even though, for the most part, I feel like I don’t.
I’m not talking about sticking with arcades as they die. I’m talking about sticking with a standard until a new one is agreed upon by the players. Being in the position of making decisions regarding Evo, I think you missed that point entirely.
I understand that MOST can’t even practice on arcade machines so logic would say that there is another reason for cabinets to remain even with the arcade scene gone. That reason being the Standard. We all know the general height at which we play and it makes no difference how hard or soft ppl like to do their motions since it won’t effect the cabinet. When you mess up on a cabinet with working sticks, you mess up. When you mess up on a console stick, it’s more than likely that the stick shifted during a motion, otherwise, everyone would play the same on both, which is not true. This years’ Evo will have ppl randomly doing well on console while others just won’t even though they’ll rock on something solid.
If the console idea was thoroughly drawn out, every player attending this years’ Evo would know the exact height at which their stick would rest and a better guarantee of accuracy than quickfix velcro that doesn’t solve the problem. They would also know how far they would play in relation to their opponent and know how much peripheral vision will come into play. There are no clear lines drawn.
I don’t expect you to change to cabinets. I do expect(just because it’s important as well as smart) some sort of proposal for a standard in console tournaments. Players could suggest tweaking, etc. Then everyone could practice with that standard in mind and all be on a level playing field. I think it should’ve been done in the beginning but, this is from a guy who isn’t doing anything in the scene atm so you might not want to pay attention to the merits of the idea just because of pride. It’s just more professional to do it this way as well. The less random elements effecting any match’s outcome, the better.
You’re mistaken to think I mean to chain SF to the arcade industry. You added in an extra variable to come up with that.
It’s been said before. Cabinets with console ports was a better idea. You can have console while maintaining the standard. You want to look ahead but couldn’t foresight have been utilized long ago? We’ve known that arcades were dying for years. It’s not as if SRK couldn’t have proposed anything. Instead you went straight to console without working out the kinks, first. You just decided to accept the kinks, I guess. Still, even without cabinets with console ports a standard should’ve been voted on if the idea was to please SF players still, which we both know, it isn’t.
At least we agree on MWC and FFA. I’m still all for Evo, but as always, I’m gonna call it like I see it even I come across as a jerk.
Don’t fret though. I’m losing more and more interest every year. I’m already not playing. I’m sure I’ll stop posting soon, too.
Apoc.
Philly backer, you should edit your post a couple of pages back, Frankie3s is the FF “End Boss” not Pyro.
lol. If washed up means I’m not interested, cool.
Let’s see. I had stopped playing Rog and A3 well before Evo2k2. I came and I won 7 rounds, lost 7 rounds and drew 1. In fact, I used a weaker character and defeated Japanese players with the best characters in the game. I only faced Mester in ST the same year and beat him twice(not that ST is his game). So, I obviously can beat them, when I’m interested. The Japanese said they didn’t believe Rog could be played that effectively. So, it’s quite apparent that my mediocre Balrog was the best in the world at that time. Come back when you’ve gotten any character to that type of level.
I cheer for friends. I chilled with KSK and KO for 2 weeks before Evo2k3. Of course I’m gonna cheer for my Japanese homies. If it was Watson against Daigo, I’m voting Watson. If it’s KSK vs. Ricky, I’m going with KSK. He’s got an inferior character and Chun is mindless. Who wants to see weak shit win? On top of that, I never chilled with Ricky like I chilled with KSK and KO.
You MUST be lacking mentally to believe that I think I’m gaining anything positive from writing long posts. I’m merely expressing myself. I fail to see how I’m making myself look good at all. If anything, I would think the length of my posts would make me look bad. Of course, that makes little difference to me.
I have NEVER practiced like most play today. In ST, I have probably gotten a few hours of practice against decent comp in the last few years and I still happen to place top 5 in 90% of the tourneys I enter regardless of how good the comp is. Even on a bad day.
My kind is gone? Whatever. I’d rather be my kind than spend 12 hours a day on games. To me, that’s ridiculous. I’m not the type to play on my console at home. I’d rather go out to have a good time. I don’t get addicted to online games either. In fact, I don’t even like videogames. SF was something more to me. I just happened to be good at it. I didn’t waste my days trying solely to be good at SF like kids do today. SF has always been a hobby and not a way of life for me.
And for your info, my kind was bred in Philly. That’s where my family is from and that’s where I was born.
I don’t mind sucking at the moment. I can get good any time I want since the time spent practicing has always meant little in regards to my skill. For me, it’s a matter of desire. I sucked at Evo2k2, to be honest. But I wanted that shot at playing the Japanese so we practiced a few nights and it panned out. Good deal for me. I didn’t spend the year practicing A3 or ST and still wrecked the majority of those that had. So, if I suck when I don’t care, that makes sense. Sorry. I’ve been playing so long it takes more than another tournament to get me hyped about competition.
There’s a difference between not wanting to play and sucking. When I wanted to play, I surpassed anything you’ve ever done. I’m not trying to brag. You just dissed me and I’m telling you what’s up. I may suck cuz I don’t care but, you suck and you are probably trying not to. You can’t get to where you wanna be. So don’t hate on me cuz I’ve ascended to where you’ve wanted to be and I’m not there now. That’s just jealousy. Go do your own thing instead of getting personal. I probably made your dad retire from SF years ago. I’ll probably come back and school your kids too if it gets interesting.
But really, keep talking head. That’s about the only thing that could hype me at this point. But if you do wake me up, I’m just gonna rub it in that I took you out with a few days of practice while you played for the whole year, lol.
Back in the day, we used to think ppl that needed to practice at home sucked. Either you were naturally good or you weren’t. Nowadays ANYBODY can be good. All the strats are online with videos. There’s basically a textbook now. I’d rather be old school. I was tight right out of the gate beating the best in the country before I knew how to dragon punch, lol. My own thoughts and strats made me good. I didn’t have to bite off of others’ brains like everyone does today. Back in the day it was a better time. Each man’s skill and strats were his own. Yeah, if I had to pick between being good back then and now, yep, I pick back then. You can go download things and learn to be good off someone.
Go DL some vids and practice ad nauseum, haha. To me, that shit’s for suckas. Even if you win a major, you could’ve made more money working instead of practicing daily. There’s really no pay off for that ammount of playing.
So, go suck a dick. In case you missed it, I was tops on my own for years without competition. There aren’t many lone players that are good. 99% of all top players play in a concentrated area which is exactly why the Japanese are better.
At least my wins have always been my own in every aspect cuz, see, I care more about what I think than anyone else.
On top of that, a lot of top players act like they are superior to ppl because of the games. Ask anyone, I’ve never been like that. Try talking to some of em and watch them promptly ignore you.
I may suck now, but my ability on a game isn’t the measure of myself where to some, it clearly is when you meet them in person. I silently chuckle at the weakness.
Anyway. I really don’t have shit against you. You can hate me all you want.
Now, do you think this post makes me look good? I think it makes me look like an arrogant prick. Not that I care. How it is IS how it is.
See, I can comeback ANYtime simply because my level isn’t based on the ammount of practice I do but on my desire to compete. Let’s see you drop games for a couple of years and see if you still have it. Wait? You didn’t ever have it, my bad.
hehe Swallow that, bitch.
Ah, I can hear the disappointment at my replying to this. I sob. lol
Apoc.
Nope. Bummer, huh? If I was high I’d probably just chuckle at how things are going. Instead I’m dropping my opinion while I catch a couple of flicks:)
Seriously, I don’t mind not posting. If you asked me not to, I wouldn’t. If my opinions are viewed as a detriment to Evo(doesn’t seem realistic to me), then I wouldn’t want that. I wish it was done slightly differently, that’s all.
Particle board for 10 cabs isn’t too expensive. I would’ve helped build them to standard. It’s simple carpentry. If I were to build them would they be used? Shiet, I could do that in some spare time throughout the year. It’s not really shit.
I think you had to be high to not have a tournament standard for controls.
Apoc.
APOC!!! you da man… Im going to roll you up and smoke you. Best high I will ever have
OG For life! See you at EVO…
Yes, if you can build 25 tournament standard cabinets (i.e. Showcase form factor with Perfect 360 controllers and convex buttons), and equip them with 10 CvS2 boards, 10 MvC2 boards, 8 ST boards, and 8 3rd Strike boards and can get them to CalPoly, we will use them at EVO.
Until then, I’m assuming your high.
(BTW, what do you plan to do with them till next year?)
for real. i remember evo2k3, chillin in the campus arcade waiting my turn for cvs2, and i catch a glimpse of apoc, and i was almost too intimidated to talk to him. but i just introduced myself, and the ball started rolling from there. one of the coolest people i met there, but i thought he was too much of a “top player” to care about somebody like me. it was the exact opposite.
i won’t drop names, but some other players i met were really short and pissy with me whenever i tried to talk to them, which sucked.
apoc, you’re going to evo right? i gotta get some eagle vs eagle matches in with ya if you are.
peace
Well, I would need help with the boards, obviously.
Getting them there would be semi-cheap considering I could leave them unassembled until CalPoly.
I can only build cabs up to specs but I figure TV’s would be fine for monitors which wouldn’t be too hard to come by. Ppl donate TVs to console events often.
Storing them isn’t a problem. I have a large storage unit with plenty of room and I could leave them unassembled. If that’s strange sounding just think of it like any unassembled furniture. It’s all flat pieces until you assemble it. It’s not as if I’d need the square feet of that many assembled cabinets.
It’s an idea that seems viable with a few months of planning.
I don’t mind you assuming that I’m high. Unless we’re talking non-herbal methods. Although, I’m a bit high, in a different way, on 1,000 mcgs of B-12. High doses makes you hyper which is probably fueling my desire to type, lol. Just a couple of weeks ago I couldn’t imagine spending more than a minute on a post. Extreme B-12 ROCKS. Try it:) It’s like having caffeinne in your system 24/7…only without the caffeinne:) So that’s probably why your getting that “High” vibe. I mean, I MUST be high to post this many times in one day, right? Only it’s B-12, not chrondo.
Apoc.
Thanks bro:) I don’t know if I’ll make it but I’ll try to be around sometime. I might go down to chill with some homies aside from Evo so, I’ll hit ya up on pm and we’ll hook up for a bit. Preferably on cabinets. Admittedly, I’m not good on console at all. I do motions too strongly when I clutch so sticks move all over the place. I’m unwilling to chill in my room on my mas for any lengthy ammount of time to get used to it. So, maybe at FFA?
Apoc.
LOL! Damn!!! No long time no speak, bro! Where the heck have you been? I’ll hit ya up in PM before Evo:)
Apoc.
If it’s so easy, go do it. You’ll obliterate EVO with your old-school, hardcore, arcade mega tournament.
Good luck getting boards. Capom doesn’t sell them anymore.
Good luck hooking up the boards to TVs. Jamma outputs to RGB. You could use a supergun to convert to NTSC – that’s $300 a pop.
A perfect 360 is $30 a stick. So for 1 cabinet we’ve got cost of wood, $60 for sticks, $300 for TV+supergun or monitor, and cost of board (couple of hundred at least). Multiply that x 36.
Oh, and when Capcom Fighting Jam comes out next year on PS2 and not coin-op (because Capcom coin op doesn’t exist anymore) all those cabinets are useless.
Apoc: its all love fool, come chill at evo we can russle up some green and talk for real. However, a few things you posted don’t sit well with me.
For expediency, I will take the stance of the Cannons and SRK, those parties can correct me later if need be. Its late, and I want to make this quick. I WILL NOT, however, be so pompous as to assume that I represent ALL THE PLAYERS. But more on that later.
OK. We don’t care if there is a seperate 3s tourney before Evo. Matter of fact, good for you. Have at it, be merry. 'Nuff said.
Apoc: All your posts revolve around these 3 topics: Smash Bros. A3. Consoles.
You usually present 2 arguments, Smash is wack, and A3 is being dissed. Smash Bros. being wack, is a matter of your opinion. I do not see why Street Fighter should be some exclusive club for only the most hardcore of players. There is a reason it is called EVOLUTION. Its moving forward.
Look. A3 isn’t going to be at Evo anytime soon man. It isn’t wide-spread enough, and nobody wants to play the console version. You said youd rather have a console A3 tourney than whatever, but I highly doubt that’s true. And if you did then you’d have to play on a console stick so you’d have 2 reasons whatever went wrong insead of one. If a console port of A3 existed, a good one, you’d still be complaining that cabs weren’t in effect. A little ironic huh?
Moving on.
Now on to my main gripe.“Console shoulda been next year”. Twenty bucks says you’d be saying that till you’re playing Street Fighter 13. You act like Evo can only be some convention, that it isn’t serious because it’s console. Because there isn’t some magical standard that exists in the arcades. Please. Im not going to speak for the “players” and say what they want, because I realize that I can’t speak for everyone(as a matter of fact, you in the same post talk about how you DON’T CARE because you’re NO LONGER a player, but then dote on your sacred player point of view, please don’t make me quote it, its there go look.), but I can recall numerous personal experiences where this magical standard caused all kinds of shit to go awry. How about sticks being installed at an ever so slight angle so locals have an advantage. How about the buttons being farther apart on different cabs, hell on different sides, I have small hands. How about the infamous top-player only cabs at b5 marvel. How about switch and 360 for christ sake. How about PR not being able to play on japanese cabinets EVEN THOUGH that is what they play on at home. Fuck it how about me losing an evo2k2 match to Jonny Donuts because my stick did not block down/back CLEARLY twice. Yeah I know how to play, I know how to block, the stick didn’t block twice in the one match I got to play, so what else probably went wrong. How about the shit being so bad at ECC last year that I conceded my match because I couldnt air dash for some odd reason, the machine being all of a sudden taken down for repair 20 minutes later, and Jwong himself STILL couldnt airdash on the standard. How about all I get is pretty much a pat on the head, go on scrub and a thank you for fucking paying. Oh I mean playing.
If you fuck up on YOUR OWN STICK, you have NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF. And to anyone that spews that “oh I don’t have a console”, wtf, come drop me off an arcade in my neighborhood please. Hell drop off a halfway decent arcade in my fucking state and Ill be down. If you can build your own fricking cabinet, you can build a stable stand for your stick. At least you wouldn’t have shit to drag across the country. Zazza at Abs(the dude that gave Daigo a hella serious run for his money), had a nice little custom setup, that his personal stick sat down inside of, perfect level for him, and it didnt move. That shit was hot, manz was beasting. The reality is, there is no standard. There is only what is comfortable for an individual, and that comes from practice on any given setup. The amount of practice needed for a certain player may vary, but I guess that’s why your top tier and I’m a lowly scrub. I guess by being able to take MY standard with me, I’m relegated to cos-players and time challenges. I guess because I can’t play on substandard equipment, I should just fucking go home. I’m a nobody anyway. You have more hours than I can count to actually learn how to do a goddamned dragon punch on a MAS stick, while I am forced to wait DAYS for ONE casual play game, where I’m likely to get fucking RAPED because I CAN’T play on WHATEVER new stick I’m being thrust upon, and shit that probably isn’t even a tournament cab. I’ll just pack up my fucking Hentai and go home. How dare you tell me how real I am because you grew up with dinky little comic stores where you could get comp. IM a fucking scrub because I’ve taken what I CAN and PLAYED WITH IT. Maybe you should take a lesson. You don’t know what real is, you said it yourself, you don’t even play anymore and you laugh at your mistakes instead of simply gasp trying to FIX it, Paul Bunyan. Nigga you must be high, that or you just feelin yourself.
This has gone on longer than I meant, and I’m tired. Seriously, the reason that people say if you don’t like it then don’t come, is because shit man if you won’t be happy, why put yourself through it. All this people have their complaints, but what the fuck are you all doing about it. If you can’t “feel” like it’s serious, then maybe youre too damned braindead to tell money’s on the line. Money doesn’t count? Ok fine honor’s on the line. Oh you can’t take it seriously? Well you just lost rep in front of 500 people, if you still don’t care, then you really shouldn’t be arguing here anyhow.Besides,
Im sure when you show up with all the cabbies and parts and boards, it’ll be all gravy man. I’ll personally make it known that you are the EVO SAVIOUR. Then for your next feat, you can repopulate the arcades, and turn this glass of water into wine. Those sticks better be fucking perfect too.
Edit: blah blah 3s console blah blah GO FFA
