ditto.
this would be the best solution at this time, in my opinion. use superguns this year, ps2 next year. If costs are prohibitive however, I would take a ps2 tourney over no 3s tourney at all.

Hell no.
When I’m playing ken, I like to do low strong, then get a cup of coffee and maybe a donut, then come back, see if the low strong hit, and if it did, activate super. On DC the timing is different and I can’t grab a donut.
DC 3s sucks.
Let’s counter-argue here.
If you were able to find a good way to sit down and play as well as you do at home at TiT6, why can’t you do the same for every tournament? You just made the case that arcade players can play just as well in console tournaments. Maybe it took you as long as the GRAND FINALS to get comfortable (is there a side comment about the level of competition there?) but you did get there. I don’t see why players can’t find time to get comfortable before the tournament starts.
As for comfort, anyone who has their own stick can practice on the floor. I played GGXX on the floor at Evo 2003, and I was perfectly comfortable in each match I played because I got used to playing in that position. Floors are remarkably consistant in flatness wherever you go.
Dunno about the changing environments argument. Different cabinets are different sizes, have different sticks, have different buttons, have different screen sizes and distance between player and screen, and have a different amount of space between the controls. Not to mention, in CvS2, different speeds. Everything but the speed is solved by having your own stick, IMO. As for different tournament environment, you could argue this for both sides.
Why is a cabinet the standard for tourney play? Because that’s the way it’s been in the past? It used to be this way because no home version of a game was as good as the arcade. Now that the times have changed, the standards might change too.
Sure, Alex Tan may have won a few matches because his opponents were uncomfortable on console, but who’s fault is that? Who didn’t take the necessary steps to get comfortable on console for a tournament announced many months in advance? Also don’t forget the possibility that AT is a very good player that doesn’t have an easy way to get to an arcade to play GGXX but can finally get the recognition he deserves in a console tournament.
What exactly makes a cabinet so great? And if it IS greater, is it really worth the added expense and extra time the tournament would take as opposed to console?
EDIT: Just to add, there’s a precedent for arcade players being good adapters, and cabinet tournies not giving the most accurate results.
N-cubed. Pre-SBO1, Japanese players come to Nebraska and play on American sticks. They still dominate exhibitions and the tournament anyway.
Evolution 2003. The top 2 GGXX players take the top 2 spots. No upsets for Daigo or Miu, or even close to upsets from what I saw. But I didn’t see every match.
Does anyone expect Ricky to get top 2 again at any major MvC2 tournament?
SBO2 Qualifiers: Played on cabinets, except for GGXX #R. Were these the results people expected?
Absolution: Japanese dominate, but most people want to talk about Daigo losing to a pad player. Daigo follows up by doing poorly (for him, anyway) in all games for SBO2.
Again, I ask the questions: What exactly makes a cabinet so great? And if it IS greater, is it really worth the added expense and extra time the tournament would take as opposed to console?
Those are all of little value, because they don’t effect your body positioning.
I’ve seen LTB play on dozens of different cabinets, and he always uses the same “makoto taunting” spread leg pose.
I’ve seen VictoLy play on dozens of different cabinets, and he always uses the budda leg crossed pose on a stool.
ufightlikeagirl always uses that funky one-shoe-on-one-shoe-off pose, watson always uses that hunched lumberjack-i’m-going-to-rip-the-stick-off-the-cabinet-with-my-manly-leverage-on-the-uppercuts stance (which always gets him in trouble with the ucla cabinet that has the loose front panel that moves around under his man-handling), that kid from shatto always uses the i’m so small I can’t see the screen, and I can barely reach the controls but I will kill you anyway stance, etc, etc…
But anyway, my point is that tables and chairs with homemade sticks are all variable heights, and cabinets are all the same. I’m not talking about the controls themselves, but the actual body positioning that people assume when they pull up to the cabinet. In other words, things that matter are not variable on cabinets.
many ppl have said this… and i’ll say it again:
FUCK THIS CONSOLE BULLSHIT
and come to World Championships of 3rd Strike, end of discussion yeah?
i’m sure someone can provide ppl with rides, or maybe bus? it’s really not that far
I’d bet one could hook up a shuttle for a low-low cost. I’ll look into it.
N
PS: Hahaha, good shit N-Ken.
PS2 (haha): Also, it’s a weird comfort issue for me cabinet versus console as well. I’m literally like 7 feet tall, but with a stool I can hit that “just right” leg half-cocked perfect height. I have a MAS stick at home, but I have to do a whole other production to make it seem the same, just because of the logistics of the situation. I can’t put it on my lap because it will move, but I’d need a “special table height” to approximate where the cab controls would be. I know everyone’s not a circus freak like I am, but we’ve all evolved our own Fighting Stance, as Rei mentioned. It’s a bit of a pain to have to work it out all over again.
It is very hard to post on here without getting rocked on the NDA. I will say that over the next month, there will be extensive testing on the game, and that if it ends up being like the DC version we will go back to Superguns. i am fairly certain that this version will hold its own and will be comparable to the DC versions of MvC2 and CvS2.
There’s nothing new being said here, but these kinds of posts really make me laugh out loud.
Do you fucking retards realize WHY you can have your “w0rld champ1onsh1ps” in your shithole neighborhood arcade? I’ll tell you: Because you are piggybacking on- aka leeching off of- the same event that you are so desperate to hate on. Without EVO you would have jack shit, but instead of thanks for attracting the best players to your backyard, you cop this shrimp-dicked attitude and piss on the hand that feeds you.
You think the Japanese–who’s latest videos you’re so busy x-copying-- are really interested in flying over here to play some random dudes who are almost as good as some guys that live down the block from them? Let me clear it up for you: they’re not. They’re coming to go to the event you think sucks, is bullshit, etc.
And when they came to FF last year, though of course they’re too predictably polite to let you know it, they LAUGHED at you guys. Have a great w0rld champ1onshipzz though d00d!

And again…
There is no magic in plywood. There is magic in the players, and their playing. Console players are SF players too, and for many years now have been the STANDARD for SF players. You may not like this, and you can insert whatever bullshit nostalgic story you want, but no one has been around longer than me, and I know the truth.
Real players adjust. These are MINOR adjustments. Are you the same fucking guys who learned to do RC electricity with 99% consistency? The same guys that practiced for 100 hours to know 14 different infinites with Magneto? And now you’re going to tell me that when allowed to play with whatever equipment you want to bring, that you can’t get comfortable enough to play “seriously” (which seems to be a synonym for needing to spaz the fuck out)? Please.
We are a bunch of bootleg kids with no corporate support and virtually no presence in the wider world, who have still turned these things into events on the order of landmarks like QuakeCon. Suck it up. The SF world has never mourned a “champion” who can’t make the routine adjustments to play under the different standards you find across the country (just because they are all “cabinets” doesn’t mean the controls are the same, or even very similar, yet everyone has adjusted for YEARS without real issue).
I’m very happy that MWC will be a (mostly) cabinet event and I’ll be there with bells on, but Jason Wilson has already said that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to do that event if the attendance were to double, much less triple/quadruple/etc.
Have any of you stopped to realize that our homegrown SF tournaments have now outlived Capcom Coin-Op USA? If that doesn’t clue you in to how insane these tiresome “cabinet!” complaints are, nothing will.
xoxo,
Seth
you speak the truth sir.
Off topic but, are there debates similar to this going on outside the US? Like in Japan or Korea, Just wondered?
i would listen to APOC he knows what he’s talking about…
what’s this about a 3s arcade tourney?.. at FFA? … family fun?the one way up north?.. if u can get the japanese to go there …so will tons of more ppl… ask the japanese to go dude… i could give rides i guess… number of ppl who fit in my car…3…
were about an hour away from cal poly pomona. yes i already talked to KSK personally and he said he will be there and will bring the other 3s players as well. so do come please. thanks
s-kill: there’s always 2 sides to the argument. obviously you’re going to stand firmly for your side and i’m going to stand firmly for mine. nothing you will say will convince me to think otherwise and nothing i say will convince you to think otherwise. so honestly i don’t give a fuck at all what you just said. are you laughing? laugh, i don’t give a shit. i was going to write a whole another argument but hey, whats the point, we just both get more frustrated and end up going no where. so i guess i’ll just stop
^OH FUCK YEAH DOODE!!! … all my friends already know about this… shit man news spreads fast! (i was the only one taht didn’t know) … but ah… which family fun? the one that soomighty and potter play at? … and THANK YOU!!! SO MUCH!..
I wish you (all) would stop. But here we are, with the usual suspects bitching and moaning about the same points. Again.
You let me know how the FFA arcade world championship goes once you have 800+ entrants, ok?
do you have jap sticks?
Yo ink that’s not completely true. CVS2 console had a few technical problems. For one, A lot of sticks didn’t work with the DC’s. So people had to scramble asking to borrow sticks. I had to spend 5 min. of my match time looking for someone to let me use their stick. A few people had the analog button problem also, but that wasn’t that big of an issue. I saw a few matches where the game was paused int he middle of the match, but since the tourney directors weren’t looking nothing was said. The black box popped up a couple times also, agains luckily none of the directors saw it.
But ummm yeah, consoles for evo is a good idea. You will definitley see a larger crowd for all games. At ECC alone there were tons of pad users there, which really surprised me.
We were at a console tournament this past weekend, with about 30 players for marvel and the blue box came up at least 10 times during the tournament ;\ I wonder how it’ll be for 300 players…
ekin: there will be jap link american, and jap link jap cabinets during the evo weekend
if y’all dont like it. stfu and eat a dick. s-kill eat a dick. dentron stfu and don’t ever come to FF cuz i kno u in the area. if u do, imma make u eat my dick, for now go play on your fucking console. i’ll give my fucking opinions. at first i didn’t want to keep going with this and let it go more than what it needs to, but reading about your old school ass s-kill, just fucking struck a nerve. u wanna give me shit for fucking giving my opinions and talk shit to me and where i come from, trying to do something with whats given, i’ll give u shit too. u fucking old school player who thinks youre the shit cuz youre old school. u kno what, good for you, now stfu. no one really gives a shit if youre old school new school high school elementary school. do u even fucking play 3s u idiot? do u even fucking kno how important everything is? real players adjust? no shit, i adjust to my opponents way of play, thats what i consider being good. thats like making basketball players play on grass and still expecting them to perform at the same level, oh they cant adjust, theyre not real, moron. and do u even know the relationships that the 3s players from FF have developed with the japanese? ksk invited us to all stay at his apartment so we can all play 3s. do u kno that? do u shitface? quit thinking that you kno everything cuz you’re fucking OLD SCHOOL, BEEN AROUND SO LONG, and using that as your voice of reason. i honestly don’t give a fuck about what you say, cuz all you’re saying ain’t helping shit. just seems like you wanna bad mouth me or my arcade, so i guess i’ll bad mouth you too, you retard.
don’t think i’m hating on old school. watson and don are my boys

ink: trust we won’t get over 800 ppl. last year evo’s 3s had less than 150. i remember clearly. 12 pools. about 10 ppl per pool. thats about it, i think we can accommodate 150 in our neighborhood shithole.
btw: dont fucking say anything if u don’t got anything to do with this. i don’t wanna hear shit from random ppl. if you’re names been listed in my post, u can say something, if not, just stay out of this.
