Good shit, dude. I only wish I could word it out like I feel as you have. Beautifully put and 100 percent agree. I love how you mentioned by the time it took you to learn where your Urien is now, you could have learned the entire SF IV cast. very true. I know, I have practiced 3S more than any game ever and I STILL haven’t gotten where I want to be yet (now trying to learn all of the Necro juggles in the corner and such, about 20 percent there LOL).
like anything very complicated, pros make it look easy and others struggle with it.
and Ni8wing, sorry you don’t have the good comp at 3S. Hopefully we keep the scene alive and Capcom releases it on all current gaming platforms with LIVE.
If that theory is true it kinda makes me not wanna even try SSFIV cuz it pisses me off that they are trying to push that garbage as the future. Either way though 3s is a timeless classic even though it wasn’t accepted initially by the sf audience in America it will live on as one of the best games in the franchise.
Great post and this here is a great great great point. 3S is one of the few fighting games (if not the only) that pushes it’s engine to the limit. It’s like a freaking chess board.
3S is truly the players game. After it failed initially the players took it underground when no one in the mainstream videogame world cared. The players put so much love/passion/whatever you want to call it into this “dead” game that it became a classic. I don’t even think the developers who made this game knew how deep it is. It’s because of the dedication of the players why 3S is not a failure. Over the ten years since it came out, 3S turned out to be a diamond. 3S was so underground that a lot of people didn’t even know it existed. 3S is punk rock man.
I don’t love SF4 but I like it but I do understand as a 3S player why you would call it garbage because in a way it is. Where 3S is an expensive stake dinner at Morton’s, SF4 is fast food off the dollar menu. I myself could play SF4 because I was/am also an ST/HF player.
But there are a lot of garbage moments in SF4. For example, the one thing that irritates/annoys/pisses me off is that SF4 is such a pussy turtle game omg. I like competing in SF4 but when ppl start to turtle (like turtle cammy) it makes me soooo mad. In 3S I just go over there and attack the turtler. But in SF4 I got to go at the freaking turtler’s pace. And the ppl who beat me with this style think they’re so f-ing great at SF. I just want to put all these so called “great” SF4 (non 3S) players in a room and play them in 3S. See how they all handle the constant pressure because all they know how to do is wait. I’m just mad because sometimes I get perfected (I admit it) by these guys and all they do is turtle.
But I do fear that as time goes on and there is no online 3S the number of players in this country will grow smaller and smaller. SF4 has a lot of players because you could play it online. Competing in SF4 is accessible to many because of the online. I know it’s not the best but it’s something. There are a lot of places where 3S is not existing. Right now I can’t use my 3S game outside So Cal because no one plays it. Everyone is playing SF4 and I get trapped playing that.
I really tried to enjoy SF4, but it just made no sense to me. The game doesn’t feel like it was thought through well. It was basically the idea of ST converted into 3D, but shit got stuck in the toilet and they just kept jamming shit at it to push it through, but the pipes never got cleared. People are playing it because people are playing it which I just think is retarded.
I don’t really understand the appeal of the game compared to 3S. 3S you have a handful of cross-ups and they take a bit of skill and learning to do at least unless you’re Ken. Moves have well thought out hitboxes and normals do what you would expect them to do and hit how they look like they should hit. Let’s not forget that in 3S, doing a reversal means you can get punished for it and of all things, I really feel like it really is your fault for losing in 3S.
You move on to SF4 and you have normals with huge hitboxes that hit people that are crossing you up, jumping at you, standing in front of you or even crouching in front of you all at mid range (Hi Dictator, I’m looking at your s.RH). Then you have this Ultra nonsense. The idea of the Ultra is stupid enough, but in play it’s even worse. Most of the Ultras aren’t even inventive or promote any sort of intuitive gameplay and how well your character can utilize and setup that Ultra pretty much dictates how good they are in the game. You have reversals that are UNSAFE to punish… What in the fucking world?! Since when are DPs safe to whiff? Fighting people who love to DP has never been so annoying because you basically sit there and wait for them to do something else, because most characters can’t do anything against a blocked or random whiff lp DP. Also what the hell is up with all the defensive functions in this game? It takes so much god damn effort to attack now that it’s not even fun to attack because it’s extremely dangerous and a lot of characters deny that whole game to begin with. Finally, I have come to realize, the old SF characters have no appeal. I’m 23 years old and I grew up with SF2, but I think most of the characters gameplay wise are total garbage. They are all slight variations of each other with either very shallow gimmicks that require tons of nonsense execution to do. I press more buttons during C. Viper’s BnB into Ultra than I do playing an entire round in 3S and that shit doesn’t even do 50%.
I fucking hate SF4, it can go crawl in a hole and die. It’s the fighting game that made me fall out of love with fighting games.
Great post. I agree. After putting your life and soul into a game like 3S and then not even being rewarded for that work even a little in a dumb down game like SF4 is such a downer. I’m sad you lost your passion for fighting games because of SF4.
I think it’s noble that you guys won’t compromise and accept an inferior game like SF4. Because the only way you’re gonna play SF4 is if you do lower your standards. When I play SF4, I gotta take it with a grain of salt. When I go to the arcade and see kids with 50 in a row with a turtle Ryu because he just waits for you to do something, it is kinda sad because “who’s the better waiter” is the direction SF4 is going today.
This is the funny thing that I learned about SF4. I remember when it first came out in the arcade, ppl who I killed in 3S would jump on the fresh new SF4 would jump on that game and be the best. Next thing I know all the guys I mopped up in 3S mopped me up in SF4. It was comical because SF4 was the inferior game. It had mainly to do with me getting caught by ultras especially that ghetto Zangief ultra. I guess the gods hate 3S because they are punishing the players who love that game.
i don’t think sf4 is killing 3s. as a matter of fact, whenever i log onto ggpo i see more and more people. if sf4 was so great how come there are, on average, 100 or more players on at once? i think that sf4 has got some of the old school 3s players to leave and play sf4 but at the same time it’s got new kids to be curious about the previous sf game. there seems to be more new faces coming into 3s and i think it’ll survive for another 5 years at least. problem is that the new generation of competitive gamers don’t play in the arcade as much so as for the 3s arcade scene, i don’t see it getting bigger but i hope the numbers are sustained.
in the coming years i can see 3s being represented by the phrase “quality not quantity”
there may be more ppl playing sf4 now and days but the lvl of skill compared to lesser amount of 3s players playing is rly big
ratio of players could be like 3:1 for sf4 to 3s but ratio of skill is definitely going to be 1:3 for sf4 to 3s in the future…this game lasted 10 years without a worthy successor and sf4 still isnt worthy, yet theyre coming out with super already…3s is just THAT game
I agree with Nica to the fullest. 3s is a beautiful game. I became obsessed ever since the release of the anniversary edition(I had the DC version on release, but at the time I was a marvel head and didn’t put much time into any other game). I started out as a ken player(don’t remember why) but I quickly became bored with him after watching how unique other characters in the game were. These two really good Dudley players are the inspiration for me switching to the gentleman. When I started playing Dudley I was amazed at how different he felt from using ken, I was even scared to test out what I had learned at CF because the comp is not forgiving. After day after day of practice I was able to hold my own, and now I am not to be slept on. I can honestly say that 3s has developed me as a gamer in a way that no other game I played before it has. I have become more analytical in the way I approach all fighters now thanks to 3s. Every fighting game i play now with the same amount of determination i put into 3s.
SF4 does nothing for me. I play a lot of fighters but SF4 just feels so empty; it’s missing something at it’s core. I don’t get the same rush in SF4 that i get from other fighters like 3s or Vampire Savior. I don’t believe in playing a game just because it’s new, if I try the game and don’t feel anything I wont play it. As far as I’m concerned SF4 is irrelevant. 3s is a beautiful creation that pushes you to your limit. Split second reaction and instinct, sometimes even randomness…3s feels like a real fight, it is the perfect fighting game. 3s will never die as long as we who play never die.

and Hard Bread, keep on that 3S, man. Remember, everything gets old at some point, it just depends on if it can last as a classic. We’ll see which games stand the test of time. For me anyways, I’ll stick to 3S for eternity (until a SF 3:4TH STRIKE comes out and just by some incredible miracle, happens to be better than 3S).
and also, what happened to putting your heart and soul behind something anymore? We see glimpses of it nowadays but back then you could see the hearts that bled to bring us those incredible games.
I enjoy both games, but I prefer 3rd Strike a whole lot more. Even though I’ve spent most of my time trying to get better at IV, I rather spend it trying to improve my game in SFIII–only problem was, but not anymore, trying to find a copy after my PS2 broke with 3S inside it.
I remember playing 3rd Strike over a friends house for the first time on XBX a long time ago and getting brutally killed–I thought I was sort of good but singe player mode with no human competition whatsoever can only take you so far xD
The solution seems to be GGPO as I keep hearing about it, though not exactly sure all the details on it. Obtaining I guess what’s called MAME(?) is what I assume I need… I’m such a beginner when it comes to all this and TBH don’t know jack shit about setting it up or let alone these definitions to what ppl talk about.
So if someone could help or direct me to a link, I’d be grateful.
Includes emulator, you just need the game roms. You’re on your own there for obvious reasons.
It makes me a bit mad that Toronto is such a prominent hub for SF4 tournaments now. Every month there’s something fancy, from higher cash payouts to 42" HDTV giveaways. 3S has basically been reduced to a single tournament as part of the annual summer event, and that’s it. Wish we had someone with more time, energy, and influence than I who could get things rolling again.
