3rd Strike Online Thread

I was getting points today. Maybe it’s something specific to you, ranked has always been weird. I never got to the old rank 25 pre-patch, and yet I started getting negative points one day. I think I got to rank 22, won a match, then was suddenly rank 21 and 1990/2000 (or whatever), won a match, ranked up again, won a match, ranked down again. It corrected itself after a little while, but it was definitely odd.

Don’t worry Bob I’m sure sidewinder has gone on runs for hours in lobbies just to have me show up and ruin his fun.

Anyway I only won our match because I used the best Chun colour.

I’m essentially brand new to Third Strike.

I’m on XBL. Add me at B3 Prof to play, if you like.

This game is making me feel weird. I’m having more issues doing basic things like super canceling Makoto’s St.Hp to SAII then I am doing things like kara fuki, dash, regular fuki.

I’m working on Makoto’s stun combo and parrying. I am doing pretty shit for now.

cancelling Makoto’s HP-SAII is a mental thing. You need to trust that the HP is going to hit, and just do the super as fast as possible after pressing the HP. Don’t wait for the confirm of seeing the hp actually hit. It needs to be cancelled fast.

Also, you can only do it when your opponent is on your half of the screen (using the timer as a judge of distance). If it’s too far, they recover from hit stun.

It also helps to hold down the HP so you don’t get a weird negative edge.

One other tip is that you should take into consideration how far away from the edge of the screen your opponent is, and matching that with the correct strength of super to use. Some characters have small hitboxes, and even though using mk works for most people close to the edge of the screen, it’s best to use lk because the mk and hk super can fly over them completely sometimes.

hk for long range (a pixel or two after the middle of the timer is the max range. characters with big hitboxes give you more distance to land the super on them, and their max range is a little further. I’m talking about using their head in relation to the timer as a judge of their distance from the edge of the screen)

mk for mid range

lk for close range

range = relative to your edge of the screen

I played a bunch of matches on FightCade with Val-Venis a little while ago. I got beat up (as was to be expected) and the matches didn’t feel THAT much different from GGPO. That said, I hate playing this game online lol.

pop of a soda bottle maybe

women are fucking sluts and whores

.

Kind of funny, I bought one of those $1 for a month of XBL Gold subscriptions last week, and was surprised at how I was consistently getting sub-100 ping connections (vs my average of about 200 on PSN). I don’t remember the connections being this good a year ago, so I guess the patch really did make a difference. Or maybe the numbers are fooling me, I dunno. Either way, the connection is good enough that the better players parry everything I do when I pick Yun, but bad enough that they absolutely should not be able to and I get incredibly angry. So…I forget what my point was.

.

PSN definitely shows double ping. Or at least double what I get to the same guy on Darkstalkers.

Lance try to play with me on PSN.

Sigh…PSN is WORSE than GGPO now?

Regardless. This game needs a definitive version. You guys who are playing the arcade board on the regular (and I’ve played on cabs, MAME, OE, etc and it sucks having to change versions), I get why you want that to be the definitive version (and it should be except Capcom cant’ deliver that experience), but most of the rest of the the world doesn’t have access to that, and in essence, you guys are killing the game for everyone else who doesn’t have an arcade in close proximity because the rest of us are being told we’re not playing “real 3s.”

seems like this is a carry over discussion from ongoing 3sj stuff, but I’m always glad to discuss it. I’ll give a big picture of my thoughts on all this (so sorry if I ramble about shit you didn’t bring up)

I agree there’s a bit too much negativity in the community and that I sometimes contribute to it. I think the issue is fairly complicated and a lot of the good players (who have been perceived as elitist/looking down on others) have some legitimate gripes with the current state of American 3s. it bums me out that good players are called out for hurting the community, as if people are owed an experience or something. you owe it to the community to come play on a setup you hate for our entertainment" basically. that strikes me as a very modern day FGC attitude and I’m not a fan of it.

I’d rather approach from a “let’s get everyone access to good setups so everyone can see the difference” instead of “let’s settle on a bad version of the game.” there’s just no question that laggy LCD can’t lead to quality 3s. every tournament I’ve seen on Evo monitor (37 reloaded, Evo 2014 stand out) the level of play was abysmal. my own play included. I don’t feel it has to be a “shit on the TOs” situation but rather an ongoing discussion of why arcade 3s is ideal and if that isn’t available, OE + CRT is still pretty good.

anyway that’s my two cents on the situation. I realize posts like mine above are not super constructive and if I’m interested in changing the culture I should probably not do that lol. I’ll try to keep my hate to a minimal.

FWIW I think OE + CRT is 99% the same as arcade. I think outside a very few people you’ll find this attitude is pretty common. like yeah it sucks that you can’t always play on arcade but OE + CRT is not that bad. I think it’s a good idea to push for that as a general community standard while keeping in mind that arcade is ideal if you can get it.

Oh. Well, I was seeing better quality matches regardless. I played a good 50 matches that night, and only one or two of them entered “underwater” territory. There were still plenty of bad players though, so maybe it was an off night. I beat like 10 people with Necro, then lost horribly to a mediocre Akuma (who I then beat with Yang) because I only know how to win with Necro against people who don’t apply pressure and or block.

I guess for me, that post was more frustration that as a community, we can’t come up with and agree on a definitive version of 3s that’s widely available and considered if not the best, then close to it. The last time I went home home and played against my brother, instead of playing OE on his HD tv, we wound up playing on Shmupmame on my laptop because the input lag on his rig was beyond awful. But when I went back to playing OE on my CRT it was a completely different experience. It sucks that there are so many different versions of the game and that those versions are so dissimilar in terms of speed and timing that it’s almost like playing a different game.

If someone said, “Hey, these days, OE+CRT is the way to go and if you’re trying to learn seriously, that’s what you should get” I think that would help a lot. But people play on GGPO (which I find atrocious and I can’t believe anyone champions that as a viable 3s option) or whatever and there’s really no consensus.

As for the community, as annoying as the majority of the 3s community is, it seems like a lot of the best players are the ones that are willing to take time to play and show people stuff. I feel fortunate that guys like Exo, Duralath, and Jason Wilson (who’s more of an ST player, but is a beast of a 3s player in his own right) have been willing to play me and even talk to me when I reached out to them. So if someone’s a douchebag, I know they’re probably not someone I’m going to learn anything from anyway.

is there really and truly any consensus as to what the best option besides a cab, in terms of commercially available or emulatable versions of 3s? Especially with online considered?

Hey, these days, OE+CRT is the way to go and if you’re trying to learn seriously, that’s what you should get.

Xbox is better in my experience.

yes I think 360 + OE is pretty much accepted as “close enough” by most players. I think people could feel the difference if you have them side by side but it’s something you can adjust to without too much trouble.

there are definitely a lot of helpful people in our community. when I started posting here 3 years ago I was pretty clueless about the game and thought I knew more than I really did. I was lucky enough to find this place and get help from a lot of people. everywhere you look in our community there are people willing to help, especially if you show you’re willing to put in the legwork yourself to learn/improve. like when you think about it we have several of the best American players who post here regularly. how many other games have a community like this? does Justin Wong sit in SF4 forums and answer game knowledge questions? our community is pretty cool when you think about it.

I do however wish we had less players who declare themselves top in the US when their list of accomplishments includes “I beat some random guys who barely play with my Twelve on PSN.” those kinds of people need heavy intervention. they are lost in the wilderness.

I too wish Kuroda or MOV would post in here

Every time I’ve ever met someone who plays fighting games, they’ve just been excited to play with someone new. I really do not get the “fgc is unfriendly” thing.

When have you ever gone somewhere to do something and had people tell you that they hate everything and everyone and wish that they could just all go away and leave it to beaver? Individually anyway. I can see a group of people getting all pissy, heh pun, but never individuals. I think what they’re pointing out with the whole fgc is not friendly thing is the immediate rise in collusion and things of the sort and the apparent methods to keep that shit running.
