3rd Strike Online Thread

RE4 is my favorite single player game ever

it’s just a long series of cool action sequences. when you think back on it, almost every scenario in the game is interesting and gives you a new challenge to overcome. there’s lots of memorable moments in the game such as:

the opening village scene
almost every boss fight
the room in the castle where as soon as you walk in there’s a bunch of guys aiming crossbows at you, and once you beat them you gotta send Ashley to lower a bridge while you cover her from below.
the part where you shoot the bars off Ashley so she can escape from a wall trap (I use the handgun for this so I don’t waste ammo. I shoot her a lot)
the part where a giant Salazar statue chases you

could go on and on

the cutscenes and dialogue are the right combination of engaging and cheesy

your right hand comes off?
the Ada and Leon scene aka "following a lady’s lead just isn’t my style"
Leon vs Krauser scene

it’s a great game. if most people think it’s a top 10 game ever there’s probably a reason lol. my only beef with it is it probably had a lot to do with the next few years being really heavy in games with QTEs. that was a bad trend in the industry. it showing up in RE4 was cool enough when you first experienced it, but that was a mechanic that quickly wore out its welcome.

also Ada is hella dope. cool female character. a testament to the quality writing in general IMO.

You post on a forum for 3rd Strike in the year 2014 and you seriously just said that. And I have no idea at all what Dander’s comment could’ve possibly meant.

In my experience there’s very little correlation between what is popular and what is good. Assassin’s Creed II is literally the most mindless game I’ve ever played through, yet it’s considered one of the top games of last generation. I watched my brother play half of it, judged it, was told by internet people that I was stupid for judging a game without playing it, then played it and found that it was exactly what I thought it would be. When you’ve played close to a thousand games, it’s pretty easy to judge an x mashing simulator without actually playing it. The only good part of AC2 is the fistfight with the pope, because that’s a funny way to end a game.

Anyway, RE4 just didn’t do anything for me. Previous RE games had great atmosphere. RE4’s village was pretty good, but everything after was boring. I don’t even remember what the last area was. Some kind of lab? As a horror game, it wasn’t a horror game. As a shooter, it was only decent. I’m willing to grant, I haven’t played many third person shooters, but they aren’t all that different from first person shooters, and I got tired of those after Halo 2.

Good god Assassins Creed 2 is literally the worse game I’ve ever played in my life. The last boss is literally an unarmed mash fest with punches. Such a terrible game with so much repetitiveness. Everytime I scaled a building, you could hear the same battle dialogue from a soldier.

I used to have a save at the scene in the castle where Ashley has to raise the bridge, just so I could go back and play it whenever I wanted.

Actually, it’s probably still on my Gamecube memory card. Might have to drag that thing out sometime soon.

Igloobob, Your Last post pretty much perfectly sums up my feelings on the game

Well, I wasn’t trying to imply it was good from a GAMEPLAY standpoint. It’s more the concept of punching the pope that amuses me.

Anyway, my original point was, it’s annoying seeing this forum turn into a love-in for RE4. You might as well all start talking about how much you love Super Mario Bros. 3, or The Dark Knight, or Lord of the Rings.

I was playing around but I meant that the music sets the entire tone in those games. It wasn’t like the gamecube had a decent rumble feature to keep you shaking, the music had to do a lot of it if you weren’t immersed by the graphics. At least that was my take on it. The way they knew how to use sound was amazing in that game. And this coming from someone that loves zombie media but didn’t much like the RE series before 4. Not that that should mean much.

I’m not that big on third person shooters, but one thing I particularly disliked about RE4 was having to make sure that chick didn’t die. I’m also gonna say the dialogue was just plain cheesy. Laughed my arse off when some dude you’ve only met twice dies and Leon screams out his name in an overly dramatic fashion.

Some things which end up popular are genuinely well done and worthy of praise.

Tebbo is lost in a la mancha

Leon shouldve at least accepted Ashley’s overtime.

Man, Ashley didn’t even hide the fact that she wanted Leon’s cock during the ending.

Laura Bush wasn’t her full name, if you know what I mean

.

The only time a lady friend co-played a Singleplayer game with me was actually RE3, she tried RE4 and said it was too action-y. It was hard not to dead the relationship right then and there, as we had had sex that morning and I was 95% certain we were going to again later that night. I was correct.

Sorry RE4. RE3 is my childhood favorite anyway.

EDIT: That is a great fucking vid igloobob. Many thanks.

Do you guys think that the price of this game will go down in the christmas days? I’m gonna purchase this and was just wondering if maybe PSN will have a sale or something so I could wait and buy it then. I currently play on PS2 and want to play online.

I started with RE4. didn’t play 1-3. I tried playing 2 way later on emulator but I can’t deal with controls + camera angle. just doesn’t make sense to my brain.

You should hit up an Iron Galaxy/Capcom rep on twitter and ask them. Not trying to be mean or anything, but why ask people to speculate when you can just ask approachable people. Though I expected this game to cost ten bucks by now, is it still 15?

Yeah it’s a pain how badly devs made controls during the early analog stick days. Though part of the reason Resident Evil 1-3 worked so well were in part because of the shit controls + camera. Most situations in RE 1-3 are hardly scary once you play roughly 30 minutes of each (3 has Nemesis who truly made you shit bricks if you were running low on ammo, RE2 has Tyrants) but the tank controls with the mostly scenic camera angles keep you at least alert and tensed up at all times as to not mess up, especially on your first playthroughs where you hadn’t yet memorized enemy locations/item placement/etc.

That’s what I think, anyway.

The Official IglooBob ranking of character colors

Chun

Spoiler

1 Fierce
2 Forward
3 Short
4 Roundhouse
5 3 button
6 Jab
7 Strong

Chun has a lot of good color choices. It’s a shame strong isn’t that great.

Ken

Spoiler

http://media.eventhubs.com/images/sf3/char_ken_colors.png

1 Forward
2 Roundhouse
3 Strong
4 Jab
5 3 button
6 Short
7 Fierce

Ken is feast or famine. He has a great set of colors up top. Even his midrange colors are not bad choices. But then you get to the famine - short and fierce are fucking awful. Who picks these colors?? Only Lakers fans and people with horrible color taste. Those probably go together btw.

Makoto

Spoiler

http://media.eventhubs.com/images/sf3/char_makoto_colors.png

1 Roundhouse
2 Strong
3 Short
4 Forward
5 3 button
6 Jab
7 Fierce

Roundhouse and Strong are great. The rest are inoffensive, with the exception of fierce - awful color. please don’t pick fierce Makoto.

Yun

Spoiler

1 Fierce
2 3 button
3 Roundhouse
4 Forward
5 Short
6 Jab
7 Strong

Strong Yun aka “no thank you.”

Gouki

Spoiler

These are all pretty much interchangeable, with the exceptions that fierce and 3 button are the worst.

Yang

This is so sad. You can tell which twin Capcom cares about. One twin gets several solid choices, the other gets literally Yang’s colors. No ranking - there’s no good choices except 3 button. Roundhouse may be slightly less ugly than the other choices too.

First of all Iggy, I started picking fierce Chun after watching Tokido in the EVO DVD for 2007. Not trying to be cheeky and steal your colour

Second of all Chinta Ken was dope years ago when he played in Japan and he used fierce so stop knocking it. Bruce Lee liked yellow suits too.

Gouki short colour was my choice for a few years now only because hardly any known Akuma/Gouki used it. Not my fav but not bad.

Most of Yangs colours are ugly, I’m with you on that.
