Yeah, RF Chun. I knew he still played 3S, he was in that Stunfest team tournament on Momochi’s team, but didn’t know he had picked up Marvel. I only saw two of his matches and he looked strong.
What keeps you guys playing after so long? I took a break from fighting games for almost three years and have been trying to get back into Third Strike, but I just don’t enjoy the game anymore. The more I play it, the more I dislike the game engine.
Having progressively more fun/enjoyment by becoming better.
And playing on the real thing on cab with real people. It’s way better to play the real thing if you can, even if its just once a week, once a month or even once a year. Its motivating and you look forward to seeing and fighting players there.
If you are in the US, how about going to things like 3S Fight Club, CEO, Hooters@EVO or all those 3s gatherups I keep hearing about?
But yeah I guess if you don’t find it fun anymore just stop.
Austin also has a pretty active 3S arcade scene at Arcade UFO.
NC seems to have a scene as well. There are pockets of players in different places (Chicago, Portland, Detroit), but overall NY and Cali have the largest scenes.
I play because I love the game. This game actually helped me stay away from some really bad influences and was the first game I actually wanted to be good and notable at. I saw the vids that were being put out by FFA and told myself I wanted to at least make it into one of those videos.
I kept playing because it was a way for me to really harness my focus and also relax after a long day.
I still play because it’s a beautiful game and if I find people that are willing to learn (and aren’t fucking morons about the game) I’m more than willing to impart what knowledge I have.
Kind of feel we should have a stickied thread for active 3S offline scenes. People can ask if anybody in their area of playing. Could specify stuff as well like whether the particular scene is using Arcade, console, etc.
That’s called the regional forum, son. Pac South was where every thing 3s actually happened. No one visited, or rather no one that played actual 3s, visits, this, the dedicated 3s forum. This forum is just like a wiki. But facebook and Twitter and the effect they have on people that have no idea that those are just bulletin boards have relegated the whole scene to this shitty ass forum.
Oh man, same here! Although it wasn’t exactly how I wanted to make it into an FFA video (top 8 in a ranbat was always the dream), I’m quite happy that it was when we teamed for the arcade battle. Thats a very fond memory in my 3s career.
Now I find myself relegated to being the old salt talking about the glory days over a beer, but its nice to stay connected in anyway. Even if its just from time to time sharing some small insight about Gouki, which is about all I have, or very loosely monitoring these forums and the 3sJunkies group.
Also the majority of my friends I keep in touch with regularly are people I’ve met through 3s over the years, so of course the game has tremendous sentimental value to me.
There’s one thing that always sticks out to me about you in my mind, pherai (aside from how innately fucking awesome you are):
At NorCal Regionals 2009 I ended up beating you. I forget when, but a couple of years after that tournament we played each other again, and there was this fury in your play. You rocked me clean, and after the match I remember us conversing about the match. You mentioned to me that you hadn’t forgotten 2009 and that it really fueled the way you played to beat me. Just no fucks given, you were absolutely destructive.
It’s moments like that where I’m proud to play 3rd Strike and be a part of whatever small community we have. That’s heart right there, and that’s something you develop. No amount of option selects or frame data is gonna give you that (although that shit certainly helps).
Man I loved the FFA guys so much, really made you feel like you wanted to be there with Jon D and co. If you have any more videos or anything of just you guys talking about old stories etc can you please link me! I also love listening to pyrolee that guy is funny as fuck
Am I the only one who never felt that SF4 felt right and went back to 3s? Im sure I’m not the only one, It just doesn’t translate for me. Playing 3s is like driving a smooth shifting sports car, and SF4 for me feels like a clunky chunky Yugo with a turbo on it. I will never reach any level beyond mediocre even as much as I play it, but no other fighter matches the feel and flow that I get from 3s.
Finally won a match today in the Newton beginner tournament. Won pretty convincingly against the one guy I was positive I could beat…then in losers he turned it around on me despite how sharply our match record curves in my favor. Sigh. Well, at least I didn’t lose twice I guess!
Somebody lend me a nicovideo premium account so I can watch myself lose, I don’t feel like paying $4 or whatever. Please~
